Highlights of this year’s lineup include the likes of Subtronics, who is returning for the first time since 2019. Zeds Dead is making their WAKAAN Festival debut this year for a solo set as well as the first-ever Zeds Dead b2b Liquid Stranger set. Freddy Todd and Of The Trees will be performing as their collaborative BLAAP project. An official 1985 Music takeover will feature label head Alix Perez, along with Torcha, Hyroglifics, and Monty. Barclay Crenshaw is returning after electrifying performances the last two years that helped cement his resurgence as a bass music icon. The duo of jordnmoody and Ujuu will be on stage together as FLORA. As founder of WAKAAN, Liquid Stranger himself is also performing three exclusive sets, including a throwback set with a list of not-yet-announced friends.

There is more to WAKAAN than just the music. The festival features a diverse array of workshops, ranging from such topics as health and wellness to music production. The grounds of Mulberry Mountain are scattered with art installations, merch vendors, games, and more. In particular, this year features the return of Soul Spin Art Gallery, where fans can create their very own custom vinyl records that will be kept on the mountain for years to come.

In the past years that I’ve attended WAKAAN, the crowd energy has been unreal. There is a real, concerted effort on the part of these festival-goers to make friends and inspire each other. I’ve told my life story to a stranger on the way to a Port-a-Potty. I’ve always left with more trinkets than I arrived with. I’ve been handed hors d’oeuvres from people passing by mid-headliner. I’ve played Super Smash Brothers and watched Adventure Time on a screen in the middle of the forest. The sense of community that this festival has is something to behold, and I hope everyone gets to at least once.

Being a huge fan of ZD since I was in my early teens. It’s crazy to be able to have the opportunity to remix one of their tunes! My goal was to keep the original integrity of the track while just upping the bpm and adding some drum and bass flavour. A great start to hopefully a long relationship with deadbeats.

Rohaan takes it to the next level from the first note by accelerating the bpm and adding hypnotic hi-hats. MKLA’s whisper-like crooning crescendos into the apex of the track, only highlighted by the fresh DnB beat. As the Manchester musician speeds up the original to match his high-impact pace, the songstress’ vocals are almost pleading in a way that’s juxtaposed from Zeds Dead’s version. The producer’s addition of pulsating percussion to the prototype’s already mesmerizing melodies adds another layer of enchantment, proving why the DnB juggernaut has been a longtime FUXWITHIT favorite.

Today, we have the extreme pleasure of premiering Tisoki’s latest concoction; a remix for Zeds Dead and MLKA’s summer-jam ‘Alive.’ Released in June to give fans a taste of summer through its warm grooves and danceable melody, ‘Alive’ recently received a second life through an official music video, and a remix pack featuring a handful of versatile artists is now set to release on Friday.

Tisoki’s take on ‘Alive’ almost feels like an extension of the style he developed and mastered in his latest album, with rhythmic percussion and clean vocal chops giving the song a newfound energy. The heartwarming feelings induced in the original are present throughout Tisoki’s rendition, as the main melody and chorus remain intact. However, the skilled producer ups the tempo, complexity and club-appeal of the track with his signature flair, blurring the lines between house and future bass. Artists such as IMANU, Quiet Bison, Pocket and even A-BO have all chimed in to take on this beautiful challenge. To evolve as creatives as well as paying homage to Zeds Dead’s life-changing mixes. So prepare to find surprises lurking around every corner. You won’t be expecting what’s to come!

The Catching Z’s (Remixes) is a pleasant fever dream come to life. A calm ocean flowing with bright and brilliant tones and rhythms. But what can fans expect through this soothing journey of sound? First up, Zeds Dead included an acoustic version of their notable track, ‘i think you’re cool’ featuring Jenna Pemkowski. Her light and airy vocals can fill any empty garden with pure flora. Letting off pure peace all around.

Then next up, we receive a truly unexpected collaboration remix. IMANU and Quiet Bison take the stage with their own bonded creation. If you love deep atmospheres and playful sound design, this one is right up your alley. Flipping the original into a glitchy house wonderland was nothing but genius and such a smart route to take. It really shines a light on both artists capabilities through somber tones. A plausible and enticing performance from both icons!

Right after, nonother than Pocket takes a shot at remixing the intoxicating original. But what’s so unique about this one is his flexibility within the spectrum. Taking the arrangement into his own hands, and giving it his own special and iconic flip. From a house-based section bringing trippy emotions to the mind, to a complete switch to a future garage paradise within the second chorus! Really taking you off guard and slapping a complete smile on your face. You’ll feel like you’re floating through the clouds within your own hallucination. Embracing every second of life to the fullest. Bravo on this one.

Finally, to end things on a very high note, A-BO jumps into the mix to bless our ears with his remix of ‘lost birds’ featuring Elliot Moss! With the original being relaxed and laid back, you won’t know what the artist will surprise you with. But hearing just the first second, you already know it’s going to be a good time. Transporting the audience onto an open rooftop looking over a glistening city in the night, the producer hits us with a funky house arrangement, blissful chord creations, and a wavy bass line. Working together to commemorate Zeds Dead’s impact on electronic music as well as his journey through time. It’s a remix you’ll no doubt have on repeat for years to come. Bringing nothing but positive and healing energy to anyone who comes in contact. A perfect way to conclude this EP.

Zeds Dead continue to change and push the scene into higher territories. Recognizing the current talent as well as paying respects to the underground. We’re stoked to hear where everyone goes next! 2019’s rendition of the Deadbeats tour included wildly diverse and impressive support from the wobble masters Ganja White Night, dubstep legends like Rusko and 12th planet, masterful vibe adjustors like Droeloe and Joker, and many many more. If that’s even the slightest indication of what fans should be ready to expect from the accompanying acts this time around, boy are we all collectively in for it. With stops already confirmed for New York, Fort Worth, Minneapolis, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Washington D.C. to name a few, Zeds Dead will truly be taking the country by storm.

We can’t even put into words how excited we are to be announcing our FIRST shows in over a year…for the first time in WAY too long, we will be able to produce Deadbeats events the way you remember them – at full capacity venues with insane production, bringing all the Deadbeats artists along for the ride. If the last year has taught us anything it is to not take the little things for granted. We made a decision not to do drive ins or reduced capacity socially distanced shows that could compromise the quality of the experience you have all come to expect from us and the label, and to prioritize the safety and well-being of our fans, and to wait…and now that the wait is over all we can say is IT’S GOING TO FEEL SO GOOD TO BE BACK…

Complex, multi-layered, and expanding an array of genres, it’s a showcase of how far the duo can push their diversity while keeping true to their sound. From dubstep to DnB, trip-hop, downtempo, bass and more all realms are expertly explored. Vocal tracks like ‘lost birds’ with Elliot Moss and  ‘i think you’re cool’ featuring Jenna Pemkowski provide and icy, nearly haunting beauty, even with the underlying hopeful flutters. The instrumental works on the project are equally powerful. ‘phucket sunrise’ presents a mean yet psychedelic trip-hop feel driven by strong percussion. Just as you think it’s about to drift away it comes back with a deep dubstep drop that pushes it to the darkest and dirtiest depths.

Zeds Dead started their first label, Deadbeats, and brought so many interesting artists and creatives in electronic music to the forefront. Now, fives years later, the duo are launching their new brand Altered States label which will explore electronic, chill and downtempo sounds. The first project on this new trajectory, Catching Z’s will be a 13-track mixtape of completely original music from the duo and ‘late night drive’ is the lead single off this exciting new enterprise.

Zeds Dead spin out ‘late night drive’ by letting it sprawl out and up to the four minute mark at a leisurely pace- there’s nothing that is rushed on this track. Out of the gate, with a clip of an old-timey vocal that asks “Say, don’t you think it’s strange…” the nostalgia hits hard. As the vocal fades out, the piano fades in with an eerie tension in its melody. The track builds in complexity, adding in the pulse of a kick drum and snares, and wisps of synths and vocals curve together in the background.  As the layers languidly bleed together, a plume of bass rises among them. With each build up and deliberate drop, the bass throbs brightly against the shimmering synths; it’s almost like the sound was made for a reinterpretation of a classic ballet as its easy to see the sway and bow of dancers to the theatrical rhythms.

What this all adds up to is a dramatic, electronic soundscape that expresses the emotion of driving down a familiar road, on your way home, through a crisp night; it glides and simmers, but always feels steady. It feels impressionistic and sharp, like smell that ignites a memory you did not know you had.
