For this week’s throwback we’re going to 2011 when XV decided to drop the J.Cole produced ‘Watch Me Go’. I must admit this is the first XV song I had ever heard and was instantly impressed. The production is upbeat and provides the perfect foundation for Vizzy to showcase his smooth flow, sense of humor and excellent wordplay. With bars like “Can we get higher, probably, it’s not a thing/ Nigga’s still talking ’bout Dollars, Obama just wanted change/ Decide if you want that fire that go straight to your vein/ Or do you want that Waka Flocka Flame?” and “(Watch Me Go) With the flow and it’s always getting better/ Call me Guinness book murderer, I’m killing every record/ Ya’ll got half-assed class, you just a semester/ Spend yo’ whole day chasing birds, call yo ass Sylvester” XV’s skills are hard to ignore.
This track combined with his stellar mixtape Zero Heroes had XV looking like one of the best up-and-comers in the game. Unfortunately due to delays on his debut album (still unreleased) and taking time off for personal reasons his buzz seemed to die down. Thankfully the emcee returned earlier this year with his March Madness Free Play Series and announced that the album is (still) coming. We look forward to future releases from Vizzy but for now we’ll just have to bump this.
