Although relatively new to the scene, Hawaiian-born, Las Vegas-based producer Ponzoo has been making waves with his infectious take on bass music. With releases on Dim Mak and Jayceeoh’s Super 7 Records, the versatile producer has been able to capture the attention of some of the industry’s best with his hard-hitting trap and gut-wrenching dubstep. Today, we are stoked to be premiering his latest track titled ‘Natives (Bum Bum)’, an eerie, tribal-inspired trap heater.
Ponzoo’s creative mind often attaches a theme with his music, and ‘Natives (Bum Bum)’ is no exception. When asked about the inspiration, the talented producer states, “Well being from Hawaii, as a kid I always heard tales of night marchers. Night marchers are the spirits of ancient Hawaiian warriors – they carry torches and protect the royalty and chiefs of old Hawaii. So, I wanted to make a song that sounded like those stories (to me), where these night marchers would chant and march along a trail to the sound of otherworldly drums (the breakdown), until they felt a chief or sacred person was in danger (the build). They would then get ready to protect the most sacred by any means necessary (the drop), which is also why at the end I brought in some prettier chords to signify that the night marchers did their job protecting the sacred throughout the night.”
With ‘Natives (Bum Bum)’, Ponzoo is able to paint this vivid picture in any listener’s mind right off the bat. Reworking an old rap beat, Ponzoo starts off with a spooky melody and echoing chants that bring about a crescendo of tribal percussion, before true highlight of the track hits. A crisp “bum bum” vocal sample is layered above a crunchy sub bass and more indigenous effects to create a seamless flow between the introduction and the drop.
