A Bay area boy all about pushing the boundaries of what we know as bass music, Sidewalk Boy, has been tailoring beats towards exuberant fans of the experimental realm for some time now. Some songs are made to elicit emotional reactions from the listener, and others are made to spur straight up confusion. Sidewalk Boy definitely falls into the latter realm, as his soundscapes are wide and full-bodied, with a slightly ominous tinge. His latest release, the GODCORE EP, is a testament to his mental pool of creativity, practically frothing with originality at this point. Today we’ve had the pleasure of premiering a glorious single off it that truly captures the overall aesthetic of the body of work with ‘WHYYOUAINTFUCKINWITME??!!?!’
‘WHYYOUAINTFUCKINWITME??!!?!’ feels like the embodiment of Halloween night as a child. It’s your first year of trick-or-treating and you’re hot on the scene adorned in a white bed sheet with 3 holes in close proximity, anxious to get to the houses with the king-sized candy bars first before the rest of the kids had their fill. The autumn air is crisp on your face and the sound of crunching leaves is ever-following, as you make your way through the neighborhood. You’ve been told that spirits come out on this night, but you’re really unsure of what that means.
This sense of youthful adventure is captured perfectly in the opening of ‘WHYYOUAINTFUCKINWITME??!!?!’, as it’s a simple but energetic drum and snare combo with light vocals sprinkled intermittently. The first drop is when all the things that go bump in the night really come to life, as the song creates a shape much like the ghosts and ghouls that you’d always heard about finally come to life before your eyes. Just as a child discovers that being spooky for a single night a year can lead to elation instead of fright, this song creates a space that shows that just because a piece sounds dark it doesn’t have to scary. If we’re being very specific, it sounds quite reminiscent of the theme music for Bowser’s castle in the original Mario Bros, making sure you knew you were in a place of evil, but one that is most definitely conquerable. The end of this piece is much akin to the ending of a western movie, with the hero riding off into the sunset, their job finished to completion, and all things wicked banished back to their lairs.
