eugene Goes Otherwordly With His ‘Vanta’ EP

by Victor Lovo

For nearly two years, the LA native eugene has been growing and refining his craft in the underground bass scene. eugene is the epitome of what an underground artist is supposed to be. Letting the music speak for itself, his first releases were void of all artwork, making you experience the music alone. The ambiguity has not only built suspense around further releases but also allowed the tracks to come into their own life and breathe. Not being confined to genres and touching on everything from house to trap along the way, eugene is a role model to all producers looking to expand their craft. This time the bass wizard returns with his Vanta EP on Bassweight records.

The title track of the EP immediately sets the dark and ominous tone of the project. Nearly every section of Vanta is a collection of world-class sound design, ghostly vocals, and menacing hi-hats. In ‘what’s that,’ the intro is a beautiful mix of spectral vocals and wavy drum patterns which is then met by speaker rattling low-end synths. Next up on ‘pull up’ eugene once again places his otherworldly vocals into chilling soundscape filled with growling synths. Finally, we have ‘creep’ which is a fitting name to a track that truly creeps up on you. With almost a full minute of suspense building risers and synths, we are thrown into a chaotic drop filled with sounds from the monsters under your bed. Check out this testament to the underground below!
