#tbt – RL Grime – Art Money

by Victor Lovo

Where would trap be today if not for Sable Valley boss RL Grime? Since Henry Steinway dropped his Clockwork alias to focus on his hip-hop roots with the RL Grime project, the dance scene has never been the same. Simultaneously climbing the ranks with the likes of Baauer, Herobust, and Flosstradamus, these producers helped pave the way for what trap music is today. Today, we take a look at ‘Art Money,’ one of our favorite tracks off RL’s first project GRAPES released on WEDIDIT.

The track immediately hooks you in with its hypnotizing vocal sample accompanied by a spazzy arrangement of claps, snare, and bells. This vocal sample is constantly manipulated throughout the first half of the track, while periodic snare fills inject the record with energy. The second half the track showcases a spacey lead synth that accompanies the energy of the hi-hats in this section flawlessly. This record is a great example of how producers like RL Grime were able to take traditional hip-hop beats and inject elements of electronic music to create stand-alone dance records. Relive the glory days below.
