Nastynasty Returns With Complex, Gritty ‘Starcrossing’

by Alex Bell

Jasper Reeder, also known as NastyNasty, has been serving up the “Nasty Nasty” to gluttonous patrons of vibrant vibrations for the better part of a decade now, constantly fluctuating with the ebb and flow of styles that come and go in the bass music community. Gaining support from some of the most coveted names in the industry like Bassnectar, Zeds Dead, G Jones, and DJ Shadow, his music has had a far-reaching impact, and he aims to expand on that even further in 2020. A fan of giving his fans audible Valentine’s Day presents, he has once again delivered, this time in the form of ‘Starcrossing’ out on Dome of Doom, a raw, grimy adventure from start to finish.

‘Starcrossing’ opens with an exceedingly spooky aesthetic, with faded-out whispers of static that slowly build to gritty, pounding fluctuations. Ridiculous vocal chops welcome in the breakdown and then aid in the build to the catastrophic addition of a kick and melody, your attention entirely transfixed in the moment as your body bounds back and forth to the beat. The layering is exceptionally complex, yet still feels like a singular beast, a nod to NastyNasty’s concrete prowess in the studio. The latter half of the song is especially robust, with so many moving pieces going on at once, yet it all somehow working out silkily. If you’re focusing intensely on this track, it’s easy to get lost in it.

If NastyNasty has proved anything with ‘Starcrossing,’ it’s that he’s back, and he’s ready to throw down with the best of them. With an already announced album coming later this year, also to be released on Dome of Doom, you can tell he means business. For now though, check out ‘Starcrossing’ for yourself below!
