As May draws to a close it’s that time for us to round up our five favourite finds of the month. This month we’ve got two very distinct takes on DnB, a producer disregarding genre lines, some killer West coast bass, and an under-radar talent crafting vibrant future beats. There’s a little something for everyone, so dive in and get familiar.

Athena

“D&B producer captivated by the deep and soulful”. Such a simple and straightforward description but, at the same time, so perfect. It’s no coincidence that Athena chose these exact words to define her project. Her Drum&Bass in fact enchants with its essentiality (not to be confused with banality), for its ability to unleash the most intimate emotions in a direct way, immediately touching the right strings. Although it may be argued that the choice of sounds is not the most original in these first releases (she herself stated “I’m still trying to really find my sound”), I find that in her tracks all the present elements are exploited to the maximum of their potential and placed in a role that seems to be theirs by nature. After all, if with just a few tracks in her catalog this UK producer has already captured the attention of outlets such as UKF, Drum&Bass Arena, Shogun Audio, Goldfat Records, and now FUXWITHIT, there must be a reason, don’t you think?

Codaclef

There’s something special about a well-executed flip. The familiarity of the original fused with a fresh direction can be pure magic. I recently experienced this magic as I stumbled across Codaclef‘s simply titled ‘Kendrick Flip.’ Taking the iconic vocals from Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Humble’ the producer builds a wavy, colourful and effervescent sound pallete that turns the track into a stunning future beat bop. If you’re feeling the vibe, ‘Cardi Flip’ needs to be the next up on your list. Reworking ‘ I Like It’ with similar tact, this one is bouncy, addictive, and immaculate. Proving his talent goes beyond just flips ‘Float’ will have you drifting on a cloud of serene seratonin-raising grooves. Birmingham, England’s Codaclef is here to brighten your life one track at a time.

Deafadil

In recent years, California has become a veritable hotbed for up-and-coming west coast bass music producers. One of the standouts from this most recent wave is none other than Orange County’s Deafadil, a man swiftly stacking his awe-inspiring audible arsenal with eccentric ease. He first captured my attention when I heard his track ‘Agenticity’ on a livestream, and I was immediately drawn in from the saucy hip-hop vocal sampling and delectable wubs that acted like a high-powered magnet for my focus and a sprinkler system for my neurotransmitters. His Wake_Mecha EP included 4 sensationally spicy tracks, with ‘Hollow’ leading the charge in my humble opinion. With as many hefty heaters already firmly slotted into his ever-growing discography, I’d expect his pieces to be in constant rotation among the burgeoning live sets that are retaking the industry by storm across the country. Keep this aspiring titan of sound firmly on your radar for the foreseeable future.

Secula

As a North American who is late to finding love in drum and bass, I feel responsible for sharing as many new artists as possible within this vast umbrella of a genre. It’s never too late to get into this type of music, and as many on this side of the world are also sleeping on some greatly talented producers, what better introduction than through our Focus Five segment. Next up is Secula, an artist who, according to his social media profiles, is relatively new to the scene, but his music boasts ages worth of technical expertise. His rhythms are hypnotizing and engulfing, but never repetitive and stale. From the ominous soundscapes in ‘Focus’ to the bouncy grooves in ‘Saturday,’ Secula’s sound is diverse yet consistently impressive. It was difficult to pick two tracks for this feature as his catalogue is insanely well-rounded. With support from legends such as Noisia and releases on Neosignal and Skankandbass, the future looks bright for Secula. Don’t sleep.

Smol

No, this is not a repost of the previously featured smolspider; this is Calgary’s Adam Smol, or more simply, smol. That said, the two certainly share the same disregard for genre lines, often utilizing sounds and themes from seemingly disparate and oppositional genres. Recently, we’ve seen smol venture into the unknown with his largely fiery, four-part Headbang Society EP, Obsessions. Featuring a trio of killer collaborations, the EP is but a window into the world-building brilliance of smol. ‘Eye‘ with Omnist. aligns your chakra with the cosmos, breathing in and out with the bass as the universe expands and contracts. Slightly more sinister, ‘Flexin‘ with fellow Canadian INNOCENT further showcases smol’s sensational sound design with some soul-shaking spiciness. Finally, the EP’s title track with SPADES brings even more bass, phat fire and uneasy energy. Another variation in his productions came a few months earlier as smol hit us with a hefty house joint in ‘thicc house slanga VIP.’ But really, the best indication of smol’s tastes and tendencies, don’t shy away from DoYu Digital, his label, which features his recent dubstep/trap hybrid, ‘City Nois‘ with Deliriousninja.

38 Volumes deep and we’re just getting started. Focus Five is back with a wide array of talents you need to get familiar with. We’ve got a mysterious new experimental artist, a wild bass duo from British Columbia, a French producer keeping things crazy unique, the next wave of UKG, and a Chicagoan fusing future beats and trap just the way that we like. Check them all out below.

Cure97

Ok seriously, who TF is this person!? Appearing out of seemingly nowhere and dropping unrelenting banger after banger, Cure97 burst onto the scene with a veteran sound that has firmly gripped the attention of everyone that’s stumbled across their work. Their SoundCloud profile shows their location as “Planet Mars,” and that honestly couldn’t be more on the money. Breaking you down at a subatomic level with massive, diverse heaters like ‘307’, an ABSURD take on Kanye West’s ‘Mercy’, and most recently his dual-track drop with ‘AM/FM’, they’ve got an eccentric style that will surely be gobbled up ravenously by a wide range of bass music aficionados. Shrouded in a masterful fog of mystery while simultaneously flaunting undeniable prowess is no small feat, but one that they’ve pulled off with considerable success already. Easily this writer’s current favorite sub-1k follower count artist on SoundCloud, they’ll be one I’ll be keeping a keen eye on for the foreseeable future. Check out these example tracks, you 100% won’t be disappointed :)

oh! gee

When I think of the Vancouver-based bass duo called oh! gee, I often think back to a promo for Rob Da Bank’s show on the BBC – “a random sprinkling of NOISE.” While not random, Christian Ashe & Renaud Vauterin do indeed employ a crazy combination of sounds in their wild, off-kilter and often trap-tinged productions. Whether they’re using actual drums or just hitting whatever they see, oh! gee’s percussion always slaps. Much like fellow Canadian (and FUX favourite) thook, these two are pioneers of percussion, bushwacking through the backwoods of bass in search of the sickest new sounds. Equally infectious, their bass is so virulent that you’ll do more than get down to their tracks, you’ll wither away into a puddle of goo. Don’t believe me? It’s just simple ‘Physics.’ Puns aside, oh! gee are already off to a killer 2021 with a foursome of equally brilliant and brutal bangers in originals ‘Gucci Whistle,’ Bitch Lasagna,’ ‘We Aint Playin‘ and ‘Perfect Noise.’

qwaston

The most entertaining part of following young artists is accompanying them on their journey to finding their unique sound. Despite having a knack for creating quality productions, artists often find themselves trying many different things before discovering something that resonates with them. A prime example of this is France-based qwaston, who currently has a track titled ‘an attempt at future house’ on his SoundCloud, but who has dabbled mostly in dubstep. However, his most impressive tune to date is a hyper pop-meets-future riddim beast titled ‘ride&back&home,’ recently released via Halcyon’s Enchanted Vol. 1 compilation. Aside from the above description, there aren’t much words that can describe this incredible tune, as it is truly a one-of-a-kind piece, and it’s the main reason we’re putting our stamp of approval on qwaston before he inevitably becomes a key player in the electronic music scene. With his latest remix of ‘dog bus’ further demonstrating this unparalleled ingenuity in the realm of dubstep, everyone should be keeping a very close eye on qwaston.

Sensa

One coincidence is just a coincidence, two coincidences are a clue, three coincidences are proof, tells the famous quote. When I first featured Zefer back in December, the fact that he was part of Steppers Club didn’t mean too much in the general picture. Although, now that I’m featuring another member of this rising UKG collective, I’d say that we have in our hands a concrete clue that these guys are up to something interesting. Getting familiar with Sensa will just convince you that you need to investigate this affair further. Living and breathing in Bristol, he is one of the brilliant members of the new generation of UKG producers that are taking the scene by storm (more about that at the end of next month). Every production signed by Sansa is always a major vibe. In addition to tight groove textures and extra bouncy basslines that are the backbone of the genre, he always manages to come up with the right elements (vocal sample, instrument, doesn’t matter) that make the songs extremely catchy. Original, charming and extremely entertaining, Sansa repertoire has literally invaded both my listening and dancefloor playlists.

vincebyvince

I’m not sure why I’ve been sleeping on vincebyvince but his collaboration ‘ZONKERS!’ with ethanplus woke me up quick. Released via Great Dane’s ADBC records, it truly lives up to its name. Bursting with fun-filled vibes, never taking itself too seriously, while also bringing the bounce, it’s the trap slap you need to liven up up your life. Diehard ADBC fans may recognize vince from his vibey cut ‘Ghoulish’ off of Haloween Heaters III. The air of mystique and laidback grooves are perfect for late-night listening sessions. If you’re in the mood for a lighter feel that still brings the vibes be sure to peep ‘Deep Dive.’ The catchy melody will have you floating while the bass carries you away. These 3 tracks are just a quick sample of what vincebyvince’s SoundCloud has to offer. Take a deeper dive yourself to uncover all the gems.

Focus Five is back for 2021! As January comes to a close it’s time for us to round up our five fresh finds for the month. Rounding out the list we have some incredible future beats, a fresh take on house, drum and bass mastery, and a few producers defying genre barriers. Check them all below.

Cerdin

First setting off my radar in late September, killer Calgarian producer Cerdin kicked the door down with the ferocity of ‘FRACTURE.’ Its undeniable intensity and ominous energy give it the feeling of a high-stakes shootout. Almost unhinged in its radioactive rollout, Cerdin doesn’t let the track stagnate; instead, he fires off a flurry of effects while sending ‘FRACTURE’ flying off in all directions. More recently, we’ve seen an explosion of releases as he tackled the likes of A.G. Cook, Baauer, and Clipping in his second remix package. While distinct in their styles, each one of these free offerings slaps. Whether hyperactive like ‘Show Me What,’ a wall of sound like ‘AETHER,’ or slow and sadistic like ‘96 Neve Campbell,’ Cerdin crafts the perfect punch for each track. Now, for my money, Cerdin’s hardest hitters come in ‘Lemonade,’ ‘3030!‘ and ‘OLD SCHOOL.’ Hop on his hardcore bandwagon and brace yourself for a bumpy ride!

Drvmmer

Now that I think about it, it’s almost a year since I met Andrea aka Drvmmer for the first time. If I’m not wrong, it was during the only gig I attended in 2020 alongside Patrick, msft., Voliik, Marlus, GAZZ, Degra and many others. Ah, the nostalgia. Anyway, I waited so long to give him a spotlight not because I wanted to spite him but because I preferred to follow a rational approach. You see, sometimes here on Focus Five I like to follow my instincts and make bets, but I know that I’m not flawless. For this first episode of the year instead, I wanted to give you a guarantee and now I can assure you that waging on this artist is not a risky business. Drvmmer is an assurance. It’s not subject to volatility and inflation. His production level leaves no doubt, it is first class. Even though he usually creates highly complex sonic textures, the outcome is always absurdly clean. It doesn’t matter how many genres it changes within a single song or how much the sound pressure is: the outcome will always be a treat for your ears. Dubstep, electronica, drum&bass his SoundCloud profile says loud and clear “fuck genres”. Want concrete proof? Just listen to his latest remix of Jack U’s classic ‘Mind’ and thank me later. From what I know, he’s sitting on an insane amount of music and, even if he’s going to release just a small share of it, I’m sure you’ll see him again on the pages of FUXWITHIT in 2021.

Knick

It may be a new year but I’m keeping my streak of championing future beats alive in 2021. One of the latest producers to catch my ear within the space is North Carolina’s Knick. It was Knick’s collaboration ‘distantworlds’ off of cozy kev’s complacency that first caught my attention. The track is a majestic work of art – heavenly, vibey and packing just the right amount of bump. A dive into Knick’s SoundCloud shows this is no fluke. He just dropped a next-level collab with $teev, koru & ohgoddc entitled ‘elevate’. Living up to its name, the song will take you to a higher plane of existence. It will allow you to feel lighter, unburdened, and lost in the bounce. While the collabs are amazing, Knick can definitely stand alone on his own. ‘circumvent’ is absolutely stunning while ‘aluminum’ shows off a more relentless approach. For the future beats fanatics such myself, Knick is undeniably one to watch.

spüke

The last year has been everything but easy for everyone. Given the challenges, we could all use a little uplifting. Enter: spüke. The California producer is crafting energizing and futuristic house tunes to give listeners new life. ‘Emanate’ which was released on Bonsai’s Hayashi compilation was a staple in my summer rotation. Moving vocals, wildly bouncy drops, and a playful candor made it a certified warm weather bop. Keeping the heat up came the gripping and emotive ‘tell me’ which carries a truly uplifting energy. Risking it all with a remix of a classic, spüke delivered with an addictive flip of Flux Pavillion’s ‘I Can’t Stop.’ Taking on a iconic anthem is no easy feat but the talented producer delivered in full. If you’re looking for a fresh spin on house check out spüke.

Trinist

Unfortunately, I can’t take the credit for this one, but I feel like this month’s list would be incomplete without the inclusion of Trinist. Landing on my radar just a couple of weeks ago thanks to his pristine release on Powered by Inspected: Series 2, I knew I had to jump aboard the Trinist train before the bandwagon left the station. With less than 400 SoundCloud followers at the time of writing, the Netherlands-based producer has shown immense promise with his latest releases on Inspected, VALE, and Andy C’s RAM Records. The former, which was my introduction to this talented artist, is a mind-melting drum and bass cut that’s abrasive yet bouncy, and chaotic yet controlled. A deeper dive into Trinist’s brief arsenal shows more of this meticulous attention to detail, with carefully crafted sounds and mechanical percussion precision being a recurring theme in his latest tracks. I’m keeping a close eye on Trinist, you should too.

Returning with our second last Focus Five of 2020, we’ve got all the new heat you need to keep you warm as the days continue to grow colder. For this month’s installment we have a wide array of producers including a genre-defying Berlin-based creator, a Canadian duo pushing “club music only,” a Chilean beatmith bringing the bounce, a future beat purveyor tearing up the underground, and an elusive Philly producer with bubbly beats. Get familiar with them all below.

Alydian

Few tracks that have been on repeat for the majority of this calendar year have yet to grow stale, but artists such as Ekcle, Skope, and COPYCATT sure know how to make tunes that truly never grow old. When I came across Alydian, I knew I was bound to have that same feeling, and since having ‘Futurist’ on repeat over the last two weeks, I can confirm that the ingenuity, intricacies and raw energy behind the track are sure to leave me coming for more, time and time again. Despite boasting less than 500 monthly listeners on Spotify, the Berlin-based artist has already earned the support from the great duo that is KOAN Sound, and with good reason. Alydian’s genre-defying approach, wicked attention to sound design details, and mesmerizing melodies engulf listeners from start to finish, bringing one on a roller coaster of emotions and sound that is rarely found in electronic music today – with ‘Memory Tree’ being another prime example. With a short yet impressive repertoire and more to come soon, Alydian should be at the top of everyone’s radar.

Glass Petals

Canadian duo Glass Petals first put the pedal to the metal in August of 2018, scoring a couple of killer club cuts on Arkade and Spinnin Deep. The bass-heavy brainchild of Felix Cartal and Johnny Jover, Glass Petals quickly found their “club music only” ethos embraced by some of the biggest players in the scene (Confession, Heldeep, Hexagon, In/Rotation and others). With their second Heldeep release, ‘Simulation,’ the duo really seemed to hit their stride offering up an infectious driving bassline, hypnotic vocals and dynamic, immersive drops that feature the kind of puppeteering power that even Jim Henson would envy. Proving themselves club captivators with their blend of acid, bass, G and future house, it may be hard to nail down just what the duo is going to do next, but you can be sure they’ll hammer home a good groove. This year we’ve seen them deliver a handful of fire sets that combine old electro/bloghaus bangers and their seemingly endless assortment of IDs. And it’s the latter that really gets us excited for the future of Glass Petals. Just in time for Halloween, they finally dropped the psychotic stalker of a bootleg of Justice classic ‘Stress,’ which they’d been teasing for a couple of months. Another sneak peek we’ve been salivating over is this collab with Dr. Fresch (longer clip here). These guys know a good groove when they find one, and you can guarantee they’ll leverage it into a body-rocking banger.
ImBN

Put on some comfort clothes and fall into a trance with ImBN‘s lush and groovy art. This musician truly brings the energy and calming sensations. His swing being integrated with vast sounding melodies will bring any listener to life and keep a smile on their faces thanks to his beautiful sound design. Not to mention his intoxicating drum work, knocking anyone off their feet into a dream cloud of rhythm. And once his 808’s hit you, they slam hard in the soul. Making your spirit feel at peace with every note being played. But he can also get a little wild with his work. For example, his flip of TNGHT’s classic, ‘Serpent’ is a delicious sound dessert. Filled with an airy percussion lead while being surrounded by a tribalistic atmosphere. To really transport the audience into a jungle, filled with sources of wildlife who are dancing with you. It’s wonderfully crafted and will get your party started no doubt. And for those who adore whimsical wavy pieces, one of his newest tracks, ‘yeah’ will put you right in a good mood. You might notice something familiar about it. If you didn’t know, it’s a flip he did of Usher! Which makes the vibe instantly lovable. Creating a soft and adorable sounding song around the original was a genius idea. Creating a fresh feeling to his work and making it flow naturally as if pouring a glass of water on a hot day. So go ahead, start your mornings right with a dash of ImBN. His creations will wake you up instantly with a positive feeling.

milye

When you first think about Germany and electronic music, chances are your mind goes to techno. You wouldn’t be wrong to think this, but there are a slew of incredible new artists looking to reshape this perspective, from KRISCHVN, to Lenny, MCTR and more. The newest German producer to add to the list is milye. While the aforementioned artists tend to reside within the trap and bass realms, milye finds his home with future beats (with a hint of trap). His tracks are often short but sweet pairing lush soundscapes, bent vocals and no shortage of bounce and swing. Whether it’s taking listeners for a ride on ‘Exploration,’ bringing the soulful slaps on ‘surf’ or fusing RnB undertones with future knock on ‘one,’ milye never disappoints.

Stevedoesmusic

This month I’m gonna kill two birds with one stone. That’s right because I’m not only introducing you to the livewire world of stevedoesmusic, but indirectly I’m also giving a shout out to one of the most interesting and bizarre labels in the world: Prrrrrrr Records (with seven r’s). But let’s go step by step. Who’s steve? Stevedoesmusic is an elusive Philly producer, with a strong inclination for short, bubbly beats. Mainly dominated by R&B vibes, but with more electronic interludes too, steve’s SoundCloud is a colorful sketchbook that reflects an eclectic and flexible creative nature, definitely not inclined to be stick to canons or paradigms. Just to give you a quick example, very few tracks actually reach a two minutes length! As someone who worships the extended mix practice, you can imagine how hardcore it must have been for me to explore his catalog. What about Prrrrrrr then? Chance willed that steve’s latest EP was released by no other than the irreverent German label. falling is a warm concentration of sexy basslines, jazzy grooves and on-point samples that “will leave no producer ear unsatisfied”. Have a bite below or listen to the EP in full on Bandcamp.

As April comes to a close, we’ve rounded up 5 new artists that you need to check out. This month we keep the selections eclectic as always. Whether you’re looking for dubstep, experimental bass, trap or future beats, we’ve got you covered. Peep our selections below!

Izzy Vadim

Yet another stud in Quebec’s bass belt, Laval’s Izzy Vadim certainly knows how to kick it. Constantly crafting killer dubstep tracks, the vile Vadim never fails to fill his productions with the dirtiest, dankest and most depraved sounds. His synth designs are often scathing, presenting themselves as feral flamethrowers used in unison with an incredible array of otherwise more standard instrumentation. And it is this blend of ridiculously banging effects and classical craft-work that makes Vadim such a veneration. Releases like ‘Space Noodles,’ ‘LEGIT BUSINESS,’ and his most recent venture, Vacation showcase beautiful organic instrumentation brilliantly combined with bone-crushing dub. A novel idea, jazz and dubstep, but not just an exercise in experimentation, these are truly inspired and beautiful bangers. If this is the future of dubstep, I can certainly get behind it.

KOWTA

KOWTA might not be a new name on your radar, as the Sleeveless Records mainstay and frequent JLEON collaborator has been tearing up the underground experimental bass scene for a few years now. Nonetheless, we thought it would be appropriate to highlight the Lake Tahoe talent once again, as his recent releases have truly taken us out of our seats and his following is only bound to grow at the same rate as his production skills. Boasting ridiculous west coast wobbles as a signature, KOWTA first appeared on our radar with ‘Loaded’ in early 2019 and has impressed ever since. More recently, ‘BAD DREAMS’ took us aback with its insane combination of old school trap horns, grungy basslines and wicked flow. The latter track is arguably KOWTA at his finest, and is the main reason he is featured here today, so dive into his impressive repertoire and keep a close eye on the emerging artist.

Montèr

As we look forward to warmer weather and brighter days, Montèr is here to instantly add some light in our lives. The Fresh Prince of The Hague fuses a myriad of genres including latin vibes, hip hop, trap, afrobeats, and future beats into a sound that’s assured to get your hips moving. Montèr’s sample and flip game knows no boundaries, with the producer leveraging everything from Gloria Estefan and Daft Punk, to Travis Scott and Amerie. Bouncy, upbeat and sexy are all adjectives you might find popping into your mind as you run through his impressive SoundCloud catalog. If you’re a fan of artists like Paul Mond and Omar Duro, Montèr will be your new favourite.

MVUNG

An emerging producer and performer out of Townsville, Australia, Brock Goebel is quickly gaining traction for the uptempo, dynamic creations released under his alias MVUNG. While the contiguous bass treatment to ‘Fuck That’ by the ATLiens at the conclusion of 2019 played an instrumental role in brightening Goebel’s trajectory as an artist, he’s maintained a creative edge that bodes positively for the future. Neatly blending the distinction between trap and dubstep, releases from Goebel’s, such as solo-effort ‘Fatality’ or ‘artillery’ alongside Hollimon, feature suspenseful introductions, unique sampling, and inventive sound design that rests distinguishably on the ears. Needless to say, MVUNG will be a name to keep an eye on in years to come.

Yates

Enough with the 160 bpm, enough with the tearjerker ballads. This April I’m going back to the dark side of the bass, bringing you some weird-enough beats that will tingle your fantasies. Yates is not a new face in the FUXWITHIT HQ (his IDs have been featured in not one, but two guest mixes in the past year) but I felt the time has come for a proper introduction. From his base in Dallas, Yates delivers a delicious recipe composed of half organized chaos and half extra-rad trap production. The icing on the cake is a pinch of irreverence in the selection of sounds and samples which make the final dish extremely hot and tasty. Do you want a slice of Yates’ speciality delivered right in your ears?

Happy Leap Day! We got an extra day this February so Focus Five is dropping on the 29th. This month we’ve got a wide variety as usual. Looking for some UK Garage? We got you. Vibey future beats? Of course. Heavy or mesmerizing bass? It’s all here. Just dive in below.

Gemi

Now, I’m technically killing two birds with one stone here, because Gemi is the side project of London-based Stereo Cube, but when I heard the insanely catchy garage that he was making on the side, I knew it was essential to highlight this lesser-known alias. Randomly appearing on my SoundCloud feed one gloomy winter day, Gemi’s ‘Jaffa’ instantly brightened my mood and lifted my spirits. It’s a vibrant bop that immediately left me wanting more, and a dive into his discography delivered just that. Every production from Gemi is uplifting and sure to put a smile on your face while simultaneously making you want to dance, with ‘Want You Close’ being another prime example. A new fifty-minute mix of original tunes is the perfect introduction to the groovy style that Gemi is perfecting, and we’ve got our eyes locked on him as 2020 is sure to be a breakout year.

Phippo

There’s something to be said about music that’s vibey but still slaps. A perfect combination to put your mind at ease while still being able to get you moving. It seems almost contradictory, but when it comes together it’s nothing short of incredible. UK artist Phippo seems to have this balance mastered. One listen to ‘Boost!’ and you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. A hazy melody lures listeners in like a kush-laced siren song before Phippo brings the knock with deep bass, trap “heys” and snappy drums. And that’s just the first half. The back half doubles the intensity and knock for a straight gangster finale with Childish Gambino bars sprinkled on top. Phippo’s flip game is next level too. It’s not easy to take on classics like Kid Cudi’s ‘Day ‘N Nite’ and Childish Gambino’s ‘Oakland,’ but the gifted producer does more than justice, crafting incredible new takes that give both tracks a futuristic bounce. Jump on the Phippo wave now.

SBK.

Trois-Rivières dub titan SBK. sure knows how to craft some sick soundscapes. As though ripped straight from The X-Files score, his tracks are taut with tension, oozing with unease and a feeling of some unknown entity lurking in the shadows. Using a diverse, often international or even alien, list of sounds SBK. is able to transport listeners to far away locales. Always engrossing, his productions excel through subtleties that send shivers down your spine. Take Kingdom Of Sobek for example. It is unclear just where such a place is, but it certainly isn’t a familiar or welcoming one. Even more eerie and outwardly aggressive, the just released ‘One Man’ is a downright deranged dub made of noxious nightmare fuel.
TRETTZ

When you become further involved with the music scene, you hear a lot of music and a lot of artist names. It gets to a point where it becomes rare that friends and others can suggest an artist or track that I have yet to hear of. Despite that, there are still occasions where an artist is brought up that I am not familiar with. TRETTZ was an artist shown to me by a friend and I had to check it out immediately since the name was unfamiliar. The first thing I noticed was the follower count being less than 500, which is a huge indication this could be some underground heat. Choosing ‘When I Die’ for my first listen, my attention was captured right away as I heard the Biggie samples (always a recipe for success in my book).

The production and sound design blew me away and I questioned how I had yet to hear of TRETTZ. Boston based artist, pronounced t-rettz, is a trap and bass manufacturer with Tourette’s. I imagine the creative process is a bit different for someone with this syndrome, and to be able to hear what TRETTZ has made is unbelievable. Whether you are looking for unimaginable originality or a ingenious flips on popular hip-hop tracks, TRETTZ has it all. Keep an eye out for his upcoming contribution to Sub.Terranean compilation Volume V out March 11th.

Zonra

California-based Zonra produces shapes for your ears. Fueled by a passion for skeuomorphism, sound design experimentation, and audible innovation of all varieties, Zonra has captivated audiences with mesmerizing soundscapes since first releasing his debut album Is, Was, and Always Will Be toward the end of 2014. Working fluently within a wide dexterity of instrument samples and textures, the sounds of Zonra can range from guttural bass to luscious, which vividly delineates a creative fortitude that can work inexplicably in a variety of formats.

For a proper demonstration of Zonra’s production range, be sure to check out his latest album Self Online via Danktronics, which he put together over the span of a few months via Twitch live streams. It’s also worth diving deep with the expanse of his SoundCloud profile for hidden gems such as a fully wobbled out remix of Snoop Dogg’s ‘Drop It Like It’s Hot’ or the collaborative Unraveling EP alongside Somatoast.

CORTR

Originating from Auckland, New Zealand CORTR possesses an exceptional ability to weave raw, unfiltered emotion and colorful energy in each of his releases. An equally weighted production hand, CORTR has quickly gained precedence since first exploding onto our radar nearly three years ago with his outstanding collaborative remix of San Holo’s ‘I Still See Your Face’ with swrly. Now toting an even further proliferate arsenal of remixes and originals, including an official remix for Eliminate’s ‘You’re Gonna Love Me’ and ‘Murmur’ by Ian Munro, CORTR continues to surprise and impress as he further ingrains his imprint in the scene.

KIKFlIP

There’s no better feeling than passively listening to music on SoundCloud and hearing a song that makes you stop what you’re doing and say “What the fuck?” out loud. It’s the feeling that Focus Five was born from and the exact experience I had when hearing KIKFIIP’s ‘daddaam’ for the first time. From the springy, cartoon-like sample that provides its foundation, to the cavernous bass, exotic flutes and chopped stuttery vocals, this is on some other shit completely. It instantly inspired a deep dive into KIKFIIP’s SoundCloud account. With 102 followers, nothing but orange squares for art and the words “just4fun” as their bio, there isn’t much to go on. There is however, a handful of slappers that you need in your life ASAP. ‘Jungle’ mixes together wordly soundscapes, snapping percussion, ASAP Ferg, Rihanna, and Lil Wayne samples for sound that’s glorious. ‘Tuff,’ ‘Bubble’ and ‘Strike’ are all worthy of several playbacks; bringing the bounce that fans of inimicvs, dilip and olswel have come to love. We have no idea who KIKFIIP is or where they came from, but we’re eagerly anticipating their next release.

Millbrook

It may be boring, but my Focus Five year starts exactly how it ended: with some good rollin’ Drum & Bass. This time, from Italy we fly straight to Berlin, where Millbrook is making a name for itself as one of the hottest Viper record’s newest signings. Under the wings of Futurebound’s label, during the past year Millbrok has consistently released dance-floor killers (‘Rituals’ and ‘Hindsight’ remix are my favourites!) which have gained support and endorsements from legends in the scene. Roaming on his profiles you’ll find plenty of BBC premieres, Noisia Radio rips, UKF and Liquicity features. But of course it’s not the big names and announcements that made me fell in love with his music. We are FUXWITHIT, not an average fancy music magazine. Using one word to justify my choice I’d definitely choose: bassline. Those huge, fat basslines that erupt from my headphones every time that I play any Millbrook’s tracks. Raw, funky, adrenaline-filled are also other epithets that can be used to describe his discography, a true concentration of energy that coud move alone a train from Berlin to London at full speed. Anyway, enough with my babbling. Check out Millbrook’s prowess for yourselves below.

phonon

Only appearing on SoundCloud a little over a year ago, phonon has been a key player in the new wave of dubstep. Part of a community of up-and-coming producers who are always giving each other praise, I first stumbled onto phonon after he remixed ‘Stop Motion’ from Akeos, and he’s been on a tear since then. Finding a recent home on Ōdio Records with the release of the metallic, headbang-inducing ‘RESO BASS’ and more recently with the incredibly bouncy ‘Muntil March’ alongside MAD DUBZ (which was one of my favourite clips from 2019), there’s no denying that the future looks bright for phonon. With his tracks already being played by big names at festivals such as Lost Lands, any fan of heavy bass music should add phonon to their radar.

plusol

Vancouver visionary plusol first found his way into my ears through a remix on Westwood Recordings’ X imprint in late 2018. His creative chiptune stylings were immediately alluring, especially to the child in me eternally exploring vast environments on my original Game Boy. More than that though, plusol quickly proved his musical aptitude and penchant for engrossing originals with the likes of ‘Solstice,’ a stunning and in turn shockingly powerful affair, and ‘Entity,’ an equally enthralling encounter that caught the attention of one Anthony Fantano. As I write this I question my use of chiptune above, but am heartened in my resolve as plusol thrives through his captivating combinations of countless genres, ultimately encapsulating his sound as “minecraftstep.” Finding room for both banging and feels-driven sections in his tracks, plusol is carving out his own uber cool ecosystem, one which works wonders in his take on Zedd classic ‘Clarity.’

As 2019 draws to an end, you know that we had to round up our selections for the Top 50 Songs Of 2019. For the past several weeks our team has been reflecting on the incredible year of music, documenting our top selections and refining the list. It’s with great pleasure that we present you with our picks for the best songs of 2019. We weighed each track against a variety of criteria including: overall quality, impact, support, popularity and personal preferences. Check out the full list below and let us know your favourites.

50. Skrillex x Diplo – To Ü ft. AlunaGeorge (Moore Kismet Reboot)

Our list would not be complete without the inclusion of the industry’s most promising young star, the truly unique character of Moore Kismet. Despite being only a mere fifteen years of age, Moore Kismet has accomplished what many dream of achieving in a lifetime, from an EP and two official remixes on Never Say Die, to remixing ATLiens and more. The greatest display of their growth over 2019 was their ‘To Ü’ remix, which was released early in the year as a thank you for reaching 5K SoundCloud followers. Moore Kismet has almost tripled that number since then – a truly unparalleled feat. The ‘To Ü’ flip was among Moore Kismet’s most popular tracks of the year and embodies the producer’s unique sound that has become a hot commodity throughout the industry. We are insanely excited to see what 2020 has in store for Moore Kismet.

49. Voljum – Conceptual

A piano prodigy turned producer, Austria’s voljum. remains one of the most fascinating modern electronic music projects of the year. First revealing the breadth of his creative inclination with his debut Cyberglobe EP via VALE in July of this past year, voljum’s proclivity for blending heartfelt piano melodies with spatial, otherworldly sound design allows him to create an unmatched depth and precision in each of his releases. Sampling a tantalizing Middle-Eastern vocal melody in his track ‘Conceptual,’ voljum. leverages the impact of soft-strummed chords to craft an inescapable desert-like impression, which he protracts ingeniously with prodding metallic synth and captivating digital fills.

48. Inzo – Spectrum

Chicago-based Mike Inzano, aka Inzo, had a major breakout year in 2019, with multiple single releases and a wildly popular Multiverse EP release on Wakaan. That body of work in particular garnered him major attention due to his very approachable, yet completely individualistic production style. Our pick for his best piece of the year came from that particular EP in the form of ‘Spectrum,’ a track so impressive and forward-thinking, it was used in a Dell Computers commercial. Evoking a calm sense of focus and general sense of well-being, this track both relaxes and energizes. The latter drop has much more raw, primal energy to it, shifting the established vibe on its head and surely catching listeners off guard. With the chance for his sound to echo to the furthest corners of the globe, Inzo is definitely one to watch closely in the coming year.

47. Isqa – Hurricane in 3d

The amazing side project from well-respected producer No Mana, known as Isqa for his future trap productions, is a hidden gem on SoundCloud. Since choosing to put a vast majority of his energies into his No Mana project, Isqa releases have become few and far between. So when he drops something, it’s an enormous deal. 2019’s gift from him comes in the form of ‘Hurricane in 3d,’ a ridiculously beefed up remix of Eprom’s timeless banger ‘Hurricane’. The vocals “we make it hurricane, ya’ll make it drizzle” are an ego-buffet, priming you for one of the most creative and filthy drops of the year. Featuring swift switch-ups, earthquake-inducing bass, and the uncanny ability to promote compulsive replays, this is assuredly one of the can’t miss tracks of the year.

46. Rohaan x Bonnema – Bigfoot

Dropping on Quality Goods Records and premiering on FUXWITHIT, ‘Bigfoot’ was a favourite from the moment we heard it. Rohaan & Bonnema are two of the underground’s most inventive producers and ‘Bigfoot’ is a testament as to why. The track hits with an insane trap energy that’s infused with wild tribal chants and breaks. Just when you think the track can’t get any more wild, it drops into a brain-melting drum & bass section that defies all expectations. This was a secret weapon in DJ sets, getting support from San Holo, Boombox Cartel and more.

45. Rome In Silver – Fool

Truly a master of defying genres, Rome In Silver had a stellar year filled with impressive releases. None stood out quite like ‘Fool.’ From the pulsing bass lines in the introduction, to the syrupy sweet vocals and the sexy, smooth drops. This one is nearly impossible to categorize, except as an absolute bop. From spring to summer this was a warm weather anthem that’ll keep you warm through winter.

44. Hydraulix x Krischvn – Chopper

Gleaned from Hydraulix’s Space Cadet EP via Wakaan Records, ‘Chopper’ depicts a voyage to the fringe of freeform bass music with Germany’s KRISCHVN. An ominous piano-infused melody weave an eerie introduction to the track before a protracted build lets loose a permeating surge of ardent, simmering bass that contrasts exquisitely with the tight metallic roll of snares provided by the percussion fills.

43. Hapa – Chrome (ft. Dayle)

Courteous Family’s Hapa dropped his long-awaited debut album this year and needless to say it blew our socks off. Our favourite song off the LP is a half-time thumper that Hapa cooked up with Dayle, and we simply can’t get enough of it. A close listen to this track discloses a sedated, unquantized flow driven by some of the richest, thickest bass crafted by the underground mastermind. Paved with grainy, throbbing percussion and heinous sound design, the swing on this track has a pulse like no other. Alongside many other unforgivably groovy tracks on the album, this chonker is truly bananas and was an essential part of our year in review.

42. Jordnmoody x sømething – FIU

The collaborative effort from jordnmoody x sømething combined an addictive vocal loop with absolutely insane production. The track which came off of Partica x Myopic’s joint EP saw East meets West collide for what became an underground anthem. While the vocals remains consistent throughout, what makes this one standout is the evolution. Far removed from cut and paste drops, ‘FIU’ never stagnates. Add to the fact that this track received both a house VIP and 2.0 rendition with ujuu, and this one was getting rinsed all year long in some shape or form.

41. Laxcity – Focus

2019 saw Laxcity moving from a SoundCloud darling, to an industry favourite. From premieres on Billboard to an EP with ALT:VISION, Joshua Mbewe put his mark on music this year. His incredible EP Purity helped to illustrate his diversity and wealth of talent. Mixing touching RnB leaning vocals with upbeat house/garage inspired drops, ‘Focus’ was instant hit. The universal appeal is what makes it so special, allowing it to find its way in RnB sets, house sets and pop leaning playlists, all without alienating his original fan base. It’s a delicate balance to find, but ‘Focus’ does it with ease and divine grace.

40. Runnit x Gurf x Xtals x Klayvay x bd hbt x ZCR x RAFTYR x DHITTO x XAVIER – Mug Club

The Partica Artist Group has been one of our favourite collectives/labels to watch in 2019. With their tracks being played by the likes of Oski, ATLiens and more, it’s clear that each artist can hold their own. But when 9 of their members come together for a single collab, you’re guaranteed a massive track. Orchestrated by Runnit, he assembled parts from each artist into a wonky, trapped out banger that is sure to demolish any crowd that hears it. This is next level collaboration and creativity and easily one of the most played tracks in our FUXWITHIT Guest Mix series. How could it not be on the list?

39. Floret Loret – Juniper

When it comes to experimental and emotional bass music, few artists compare to Floret Loret. 2019 was a breakout year for the talented producer that included an EP on Deadbeats and a set at EDC Orlando. Laying the foundation for his breakout year was the release of the impeccably produced Tangled Roots EP. The body of work cemented his signature sound and no song encapsulates it better than ‘Juniper.’ Combining hauntingly beautiful melodies with brutish bass and mind-warping sound design, the track proves that experimental bass music truly can have heart.

38. Tyler the Creator x A$AP Rocky – Who Dat Boy (Chee Bootleg)

South-African mastermind of musical domination Chee had an incredibly successful 2019 campaign including an EP on Inspected titled Read Once Then Destroy and a massive collab with Liquid Stranger titled ‘Zero Frontier’ on Stranger’s Infinity EP. But, our pick for his best track of the year and one worthy of a spot on our list is his remix of Tyler the Creator and A$AP Rocky’s song ‘Who Dat Boy,’ a perfect showcase of Chee’s dark and immensely heavy production. Both menacing and soul-crushing, this track bodies speaker systems into feeble submission. Featuring some of the most impressive and unique sound design of the year, this ‘Who Dat Boy’ remix is surely one of the best remixes of the year.

37. ZEKE BEATS x AVANCE – Bad Robot

Turntablist sensation ZEKE BEATS has blossomed into a versatile production asset and deadly live performance spectacle over the course of the past year, accomplishing both an EP release via Deadbeats and the preceding state-side Purple Haze tour with G-REX. Elected as the title track for his inaugural Deadbeats project, ‘Bad Robot’ alongside Australia native AVANCE illustrates a sensational collision of talent. Leveraging the free-flowing song structure that ZEKE has grown notorious for, the beginning stages of the track commence like the opening scene of a major box office film, building an immeasurable level of anticipation as burgeoning horns unleash a convoluted strand of vacillating digital synth work and gritty heaves of bass.

36. What So Not – We Can Be Friends (Quiet Bison Remix)

Quiet Bison has had a breakout 2019. Continuing to define his sound that is comparable to the likes of Flume and which some have dubbed ‘vapor twitch,’ Quiet Bison pushed new boundaries with two incredible EPs. When he got his hands on What So Not’s ‘We Can Be Friends,’ he delivered an emotionally-fuelled powerhouse of a track that is sure to stop listeners dead. With forward-thinking sound design such as his, it’s clear to see why he’s been added to Electric Forest’s 2020 lineup and is regarded as one of the industry’s brightest new talents.

35. Mersiv – Beautiful & Filthy ft. Chill Bobby

One of the fastest growing artists of 2019, Anderson Benoit, also known as Mersiv, showcased his next-level sound design and straight-up ridiculous live mixing to hundreds of thousands of ears. The Denver native had majorly successful releases in the form of his self-released downtempo Digital Eden EP, along with his collaboration with sfam titled ‘Don’t Test Me’ and NKODB EP released on Wakaan. Arguably his biggest single track release though, came in the form of ‘Beautiful & Filthy,’ also released on Wakaan, a magnificent ode to all the various styles he’s attempted in his youthful production career wrapped into 4 minutes and 23 seconds. Garnering support from some of the biggest names in the industry, including being rinsed in several detox sets from head T-Rex Excision, and 300,000 streams between Spotify and SoundCloud, this piece lives up to its aptly-named title. With purring, all-encompassing bass lines and buttery-smooth vocals from Chill Bobby, ‘Beautiful & Filthy’ can be a perfect track no matter the mood you’re in, and is undoubtedly deserving of a spot on this list.

34. Hudson Lee & Frequent – Windows

There weren’t many more dazzling or dizzying displays of creativity in 2019 than Hudson Lee and Frequent’s ‘Windows.’ A mystifying melodic dubstep number, the track features a melange of futuristic and organic sounds that, as Lee says in the description, arise out of the numerous encounters the internet has made possible. It is an epic assortment of ideas somehow cohesively combined into one brilliant banger that will leave you wondering just what happened over its six minute span. If a list like this is meant to be representative of not just the year itself, but of what the future could sound like, then ‘Windows’ certainly deserves a nod.

33. G-Rex – Ladi

Carrying enormous amounts of momentum into 2019 on the heels of ‘Babatunde,’ arguably the biggest track of 2018, G-Rex had fans waiting with bated breath for what he would whip up next. His answer? The unreal nutty Requiem EP, which we had the pleasure of premiering ‘Warning’ from. The real crown jewel from that body of work, though, was ‘Ladi,’ a track Liquid Stranger had been rinsing in his own sets for months, frying minds to a distinct crispness. The dark vocals of “ladi-da” are looped, creating the sense that some form of evil magic is about to be unleashed onto everyone in the area. The first drop is the sonic embodiment of anger, immense, crushing noise that oozes style and of course has G-Rex’s patented horse neigh. The second drop sounds like a tractor beam straight to a UFO, abducting bodies and consciousnesses alike. He’s put forth some of the most impressive sounds of the year, but 2019 was only a warm-up.

32. Tsuruda – Caustic

While Tsuruda was ‘blowing off steam,’ the rest of the bass music world has been desperately attempting to keep up. Casually dropped as a single on his SoundCloud and included on his legendary FUBAR EP, this beast of a track very well might be the catalyst of an epidemic across the underground and festival circuits alike. Dipping his toes into the treacherous world of riddim, this hazardously raunchy tune speaks for itself through vocal samples of Apex Legends character (you guessed it), Caustic, with the pertinent quotes “Science is precise, as am I” and “The kill is more important than the pride.” Between quotes comparable with Tsuruda’s humble attitude and meticulous production style, the quality delivered on ‘Caustic’ (and many other tracks) are just some of the reasons we love him. Alongside an endless list of impossibly good tracks, the wonk that Tsuruda has brought to the table this year makes us giddy for what he has in store.

31. Jon Casey x Dabow x aedfx – Birds

Jon Casey, Dabow and AedFX are the future of trap. Coming off Jon Casey’s Catharsis EP, ‘Birds’ is one of the hands down trap bangers of the year. Alluring strings, majestic birds samples, spiritual pre-drop vocals and percussion programming that’ll leave you dizzy, all come together in perfect harmony. Jon Casey teased this in his FUXWITHIT Guest Mix nearly a year before it dropped and it proved to be well worth the wait. This is trap perfection.

30. Zeds Dead x DROELOE – Stars Tonight

Enjoy kicking back with your best friends and having those late night conversations looking up at the stars? Well Zeds Dead and DROELOE captured that feeling with their euphoric single ‘Stars Tonight.’ Bringing out a softer side from these producers, goosebumps run down your spine as beautiful vocals flow immaculately into the picture. However, we all know Zeds Dead and DROELOE will always showcase their alternative persona as an explosion of bass and slow tempo instrumentals surprise listeners at the drop. ‘Stars Tonight’ provides listeners the perfect amount of feels and bass, well executed by Zeds Dead and DROELOE.

29. Liquid Stranger x Ganja White Night – Jungle Juice

One of the most anticipated collaborations of the entire year, ‘Jungle Juice’ seemed to be a distant dream for many fans of both Wakaan and SubCarbon, solely being rinsed in live sets from Liquid Stranger and Ganja White Night for months on end. The opening vocals of “a snake snatching, bush-whacking adventure” couldn’t be more appropriate, as this song feels like a romp through an unfamiliar jungle wilderness. Incorporating insane bass-lines and a wobbly flow that is a perfect melding of both groups’ styles, this piece has laid-waste to all that have been graced with its presence. With 1.6 million combined streams between Spotify and SoundCloud, this track has accumulated immense amounts of all-around success, leaving fans of both artists on the edges of their seats in anticipation of any future combined efforts.

28. MUST DIE! – CHAOS

With a fleet of potential options to select from, 2019 has been an exceptional year of innovation and productivity for MUST DIE! While the Seattle-based producer has been notorious for weaving voracious synth melodies to hoist detrimental volume of bass since first releasing to Rottun Records in late 2012, ‘CHAOS’ flawlessly eclipses each of MUST DIE!’s abundance of styles all within one track, composing a riveting opening scene that blends seamlessly with poignant horns to heighten the track to a peak, before unleashing an unpitying torrent of bass.

27. YBN Cordae x Anderson .Paak – RNP

YBN Cordae is the future of rap. Perfectly bridging the gap between classic lyrical skills and new age swagger, the young MC dropped arguably the best rap album of 2019 in The Lost Boy, not to mention one of the best debuts of the decade. While a handful of tracks were considered for the list, ‘RNP’ alongside Anderson .Paak was our top pick. The production is excellent but what really made this one so special is the chemistry between the two artists. Their in-and-out flow had hip hop fans reminiscing of classic Jadakiss and Style P collabs. Punchlines, humour, impeccables flows; this is rap at its finest.

26. thook – Numbers

If we’re strictly talking talent and originality, few producers in music compare to thook. The Toronto-based beat-maker brings a freshness and creativity to the trap scene that can only be likened to legends like Mr. Carmack and TroyBoi. Although his Noise LP was dripping with potential candidates for songs of the year, it’s actually a self release that takes the cake. ‘Numbers’ proves why thook is truly on another level. From the ominous sci-fi inspired atmosphere of the intro, to the drop that’ll make your mind melt, it’s the perfect balance of musicality and madness. Oh, and the addition of the violin in the final drop takes this one from massive to iconic.

25. Spag Heddy – Zoom

A track that was teased for months as an unreleased gem, Spag Heddy’s ‘Zoom’ quickly became a secret weapon in all dubstep and trap sets due to its raw, unadulterated energy and innate versatility. Initially thought to be the ‘Babatunde’ of 2019 until ‘Griztronics’ came along, there’s no denying the ‘Zoom’ was both a DJ and crowd favourite. With a revival later in the year with remixes from Never Say Die favourites such as Krimer, L.U.X and Moore Kismet, ‘Zoom’ remained a staple in sets for all of 2019 and there was no debate about its inclusion in this list.

24. Mr. Carmack – THINGS I CANNOT TELL YOU TO YOUR FACE

Mr. Carmack. Need we say more? If there is one track to lure listeners into a state of hypnosis, it is this one. With smooth snares and space like melodies, Mr. Carmack perfected his masterpiece by incorporating his unique sound design filled with slow tempo synths and discreet melodies. With experimental instrumentals and futuristic sound, crowd control just got a whole lot easier. Carmack blessed us with no shortage of incredible releases this year, but the complexity and diversity contained in ‘THINGS I CANNOT TELL YOU TO YOUR FACE’ easily made it one of his best works of the year.

23. Moody Good – SIXTYSIXTY

Moody Good is another artist who decided 2019 was his year to return to the scene with a bang. This return was catapulted with the release of the wickedly innovative Goofball EP on Never Say Die and, more specifically, with the release of ‘SITXTYSIXTY.’ Arguably the most aggressive, bass-in-your-face track of the year, ‘SIXTYSIXTY’ is a relentless offering of insanely produced sounds from the previously-elusive legend, propelling him back atop the dubstep throne. With a recent revival in the form of a VIP, it’s safe to say the ‘SIXTYSIXTY’ put Moody Good back on the map as a king of production and ingenuity.

22. ISOxo x Knock2 – Radial

RL Grime’s mission for 2019 was to highlight the most promising names in trap with his newly-founded Sable Valley record label. Perhaps the best display of bringing underground names to light was with ISOxo and Knock2’s infectious ‘Radial.’ A track that quickly propelled the two producers to the forefront of trap music, ‘Radial’ became an instant-favourite in the industry due to its combination of exceptional tension-building soundscapes and truly unique and futuristic drops. With the recent release of ISOKNOCK 1, a mix dedicated to the fans and the community, ISOxo and Knock2 prove that they are just getting started.

21. Leotrix – Hive Bounce

‘Hive Bounce’ is easily recognized as one of the most innovative dubstep tracks in the game right now. Leotrix has been consistently delivering hypnotizing tracks to make the ground shake and melt your face off at the same time. With a cinematic intro to warn his listeners for the disaster approaching, Leotrix constructs a perfect balance of slow tempo bass chops and rapid drum claps to represent the idea that “musical ideas or thoughts are spread so rapidly that it’s almost as if we are all part of a digital hivemind.” With creativity and precision in his favour, Leotrix is always one step ahead when it comes down to intertwining bouncy, yet filthy tracks such as ‘Hive Bounce.’

20. Bassnectar x Peekaboo – Illusion ft. Born I

It’s no surprise at this point that any track by Bassnectar will do exceedingly well, but couple him with one of the fastest rising talents in the game, Peekaboo, and you’ll have a product that is truly special. Sitting at the 3rd spot on Nectar’s Reflective Pt. 4, ‘Illusion’ not only snaps your neck in half, it whips it back in the opposite direction just for good measure. One of the most vicious tracks of the year, every aspect of this track spikes your adrenaline, from the main vocals of “I gotta get the place moving” courtesy of Born I, to the absolutely ludicrous second drop sounding like a bass demon crawling out of a portal to hell. The track may say “jump in the whip and we cruisin,” but proceed at your own caution, as you might find yourself headbanging so hard you lose track of the road. With Peekaboo earning several headlining appearances around the country and pumping out some of the most forward-thinking productions of the year, and Bassnectar continuing to reign supreme as the King of the Sound, selling out every curated event he’s held with the loudest sound system in North America, these two will be worth making the trek to any performance they have in 2020.

19. Stormzy – Vossi Bop

With the imminent release of Heavy Is The Head, this list would not be complete without the first single from Stormzy’s upcoming sophomore album (and first single in over two years), ‘Vossi Bop.’ A mixture of the grime artist’s aggressive vocal style and softer, more lyrical works, ‘Vossi Bop’ catapulted Stormzy back to stardom and created an insane amount of hype worldwide. Following this first single with heaters such as ‘Sounds Of The Skeng’ and ‘Wiley Flow,’ Stormzy proved that no rust had accumulated during his inactivity and that Heavy Is The Head is sure to be a welcome follow-up to Gang Signs & Prayer.

18. Space Laces – Phone Tap

Amongst the ever-increasing throng of dubstep producers, the artists that stand out the most from the crowd are ones that push the boundaries of sound design, opening fresh neural pathways in all who rinse their material. Space Laces is one of the finest examples of this in the current era, utilizing menacing arrangements and truly computer-sounding noises, with his tracks played out by some of the biggest names in the game. Arguably his most magnificent piece from this year is ‘Phone Tap,’ a track that elicits only the grimiest of bass faces. This track has some of the most top-tier production I’ve personally ever heard, and absolutely crushes on any sound system that’s blessed to have it rumble through its subwoofers. With a ludicrous number of IDs, fans should surely be on the edge of their seats for what this madman will put out next in 2020.

17. Calcium – Mega Punch

While 2018 was a breakout year for Calcium, 2019 was the year where he pushed his sound to new heights and broke out into the festival and touring circuit. This success was catapulted with the release of ‘Mega Punch,’ a track that was first teased by many in mixes before infiltrating heavy bass sets across North America and beyond. A track that sees Calcium solidify his brand and signature through its chainsaw-esque synths, Gatling gun basses and distinct percussion fills, ‘Mega Punch’ played a key role in the producer’s rapid rise to the top and helped bridge heavy dubstep into the mainstream.

16. Young Thug – The London ft. J. Cole & Travis Scott

An epic collaboration between three of the rap game’s biggest names, ‘The London’ became an instant-hit due to its infectious nature and perfect balance between wavy and knocking. Travis Scott’s smooth hook pulls you in, before J. Cole drops off a stellar verse that has him flirting with a Young Thug inspired flow. Following another hook, Young Thug hops in with his signature steez to round out the summer jam. There’s no denying that ‘The London’ was one of this year’s biggest hip hop tracks and we’ll let its numbers do the talking.

15. Flume – Rushing Back ft. Vera Blue

Many moons after Skin, Flume resurfaced this year to deliver us a plethora of long-awaited tunes. Among them was the sensational ‘Rushing Back’ featuring elegantly beautiful vocals from the talented Vera Blue. Reminiscent of his hit ‘Never Be Like You (feat. Kai),’ this track speaks to all audiences through a uniquely satisfying harmony expressed through a variety of luscious synths, led by infectious melody while still maintaining the far reaching experimental side of the bad boy of EDM. This beauty is guilty of being stuck on repeat, and couldn’t be overlooked in our top 50.

14. UZ – Bang Bang

UZ and his label Quality Goods Records have been working tirelessly to not only keep trap alive, but to help see it thrive and evolve. His incredible single ‘Bang Bang’ personifies this and everything that makes UZ one of the most important artists of the past few years. A simple but evocative loop draws you in with each passing bar. The first drop is unbridled trap filth in its purest form. With a break that flexes his turntablist roots, we’re reminded of UZ’s range of talents. Capping things off comes an experimental leaning drop that’s harder than a baseball bat to the skull. ‘Bang Bang’ is the perfect fusion of classic trap influence and forward-thinking sound put together by an absolute master.

13. JOYRYDE – I’M GONE

Another year has passed and JOYRYDE’s highly elusive BRAVE album is still nowhere to be found. Despite keeping fans out of the loop with all things album-related, it would be unjust to omit his biggest track of the year from the list. ‘I’M GONE’ was the first BRAVE single and showed fans a new side of the producer’s already legendary sound, where he combines his usual bass house-driven signature with orchestral soundscapes to create a masterpiece. Building an insane amount of hype for the rest of the project before releasing a few other hard-hitting singles, ‘I’M GONE’ marked JOYRYDE’s return and we eagerly anticipate what is next.

12. Eliminate – Weeble Wobble

There’s no denying that Eliminate knows how to make a hit. His unique, squeaky-clean signature sound has been used in dubstep, trap and house tracks to consistently send crowds into a frenzy, and ‘Weeble Wobble’ is certainly no exception. A track that was played in a plethora of various-styled sets, ‘Weeble Wobble’ is an incredibly infectious and highly versatile heater that fits perfectly just about anywhere. While edging on the house side for the majority of its duration, its trap and halftime breaks are ideal for mixing, and its popularity in heavy bass sets are the proof.

11. DJ Snake x Eptic – SouthSide

There really is no surprise in seeing DJ Snake and Eptic’s ‘SouthSide’ as the highest ranked dubstep track on this year’s list. A true anthem that was among the most rinsed at EDC Las Vegas and other bass-oriented festivals, ‘SouthSide’ sees Eptic’s signature robotic sounds and DJ Snake’s trap-leaning influences come together to form a cohesively invigorating banger.
10. TNGHT – Dollaz

After years of teasing us, TNGHT finally made their long anticipated return this year.
8. Skrillex – Mumbai Power

2019 was an epic year for Skrillex. From returning as Dog Blood to receiving a Grammy-nomination, the legend returned stronger than ever, displaying a versatility that is truly unparalleled in the industry. His most successful track, however, was not his Grammy-nominee, but ‘Mumbai Power’ from his Show Tracks EP that finally saw the light of day after being teased in his live sets for months.
7. Boombox Cartel – NEW WIP

Skrt Skrt! MadeinTYO’s swag-infused bars and addictive adlibs proved to be the perfect compliment to Boombox Cartel’s heavy-hitting trap sound. You’d be hard pressed to find a more impressive and impactful example of rap and electronic coming together than on ‘NEW WIP.’ This was the trap anthem of the year. It was practically impossible to hit a festival this year and not hear it pounding and setting crowds ablaze. Cheeky lyrics, like “I am not Rae Sremmurd, baby I got a type” and some insane synth work in the drops had this ringing off all 2019. The addition of remixes from Chris Lorenzo, PIERCE x Volt, and NXSTY only added to its already impressive impact.

5. Flume x Eprom – Spring

First teased as the soundtrack to Lollapalooza, ‘Spring’ unofficially marked the return of Flume. Hailing from the boundary pushing, Grammy-nominated mixtape Hi This Is Flume, ‘Spring’ is the love child of two of the most highly respected sound designers of our time. The song draws ethereal vocal samples into a forward-thinking, elastic rhythm driven by spring-loaded 808s and witty percussion. The lead blurs the lines between a synth lead and percussion, blending seamlessly into a brightly woven track that shimmers and gleams. When the worlds of Flume and Eprom collided on this track, a feel-good, timeless banger was born.

4. Dog Blood – Turn Off The Lights

Among the many legends who made their return to releasing frequent music in 2019, Skrillex and Boys Noize reuniting as Dog Blood was at the top of everyone’s list. In their first release in over five years, Dog Blood created a decade-defying anthem with ‘Turn Off The Lights,’ drawing inspiration from old-school industrial parties and modern bass music to concoct a rave-ready anthem that made its way through countless sets worldwide. Later releasing a four-track EP with the same name, it’s safe to state that the return of Dog Blood set the electronic music scene into a frenzy, with producers from all over taking a stab a remixing the greats.

3. Drake x Meek Mill – Going Bad

There are few comeback stories sweeter than Meek Mill’s. After taking an L to Drake during their beef and being sent back to prison for questionable reasons, it seemed Meek could not catch a break. But as the chips were down, Meek was able to persevere and become a fan and industry favourite once again. The controversial ruling that sent him back to jail ended up being the tipping point that had everyone from Philadelphia 76ers owner Michael Rubin to Jay-Z vying for his release and showing love. Upon his release in 2018, Meek was on a path to takeover the game once more. His ascent back to the top was fully realized as he linked up with former enemy Drake for the iconic hit ‘Going Bad’. Officially released at the end of 2018, this track became the hardest rap smash of 2019. Seeing two rap heavyweights put their beef aside to lay down a banger was a moment that will not be forgotten in hip hop. With over 500+ million streams, this one still goes off every time it’s rinsed over a year later.

2. J. Cole – Middle Child

J. Cole came through and snatched the rapper of the year crown in 2019. From his incredible feature run, to the epic cultural moment that was Revenge of The Dreamers III, this was undeniably Cole’s year. In January, J. Cole put the world on notice with ‘Middle Child’. Opening with, “Niggas been countin’ me out/ I’m countin’ my bullets, I’m loadin’ my clips/ I’m writin’ down names, I’m makin’ a list/ I’m checkin’ it twice and I’m gettin’ ’em hit/ The real ones been dyin’, the fake ones is lit/ The game is off balance, I’m back on my shit/ The Bentley is dirty, my sneakers is dirty/But that’s how I like it, you all on my dick,” J. Cole came through to restore that balance and let everyone know he wasn’t here to play around. The track proved that quality rap was still in high demand. Devoid of poppy, catchy sounds, this wasn’t meant for the radio, but they still played it though. Clocking well over half a billion collective streams online, this was one of the biggest, and definitely the best rap records of the year. The track perfectly embodied what makes Cole one of the greatest artists of the decade. Sharp bars, honesty and a message, all over a triumphantly fitting beat. Cole really lived everything he spoke on within the track especially the idea of bridging the gap between the legends and the future; feeling as at home alongside Gangstarr as he did with artists like Moneybagg Yo and Young Thug. Cole claimed King in 2019 and ‘MIDDLE CHILD’ was the battle cry that rang off all year.

1. Griz x Subtronics – Griztronics

This massive track needs no introduction. A no-doubter for song of the year, this was a unanimous decision amongst our staff to sit proudly atop our list. A perfect melding of styles between two immensely talented artists, ‘Griztronics’ has over 7 million streams on both Spotify and SoundCloud in only 3 months, along with trending on various social media platforms (#1 on Tik Tok) and cracking the top 10 on Billboard (dance/electronic), not to mention becoming the unofficial anthem of Lost Lands. Besides producing an international sensation, both artists had incredible years all around, with Griz releasing his full-length album Ride Waves, and 4 Bangers EP’s, with Griztronics sitting atop the 2nd of those, and Subtronics releasing his Wooked on Tronics EP 2 months ago to critical acclaim, with 80% of the tracks included surpassing 100k streams on SoundCloud alone. Seeing the weird bass music we love making its way into the mainstream is a beautiful thing. Wobbly, wubby, and full of attitude, this shit really do be hitting different.

It’s the last day of the month and that means it’s time for a fresh Focus Five feature. As always we’re bringing you five under-the-radar artists that you need to know. This month we’ve got a future leaning producer killing the remix game, another incredible French beat maker, a dubstep fanatic from Quebec, one of the most exciting artists in the experimental scene, and an artist who embodies the new wave trap sound that we’re in love with. Get familiar with them all below.

Camoufly

You must have guts to put out a remix of Zac Efron right after a rework of 50 Cent, Kanye and the undisputed Machintosh Plus’ Vaporwave classic ‘02 リサフランク420 – 現代のコンピュ.’ Apparently Camoufly has balls, huge ones, and (spoiler alert) he’s showing them off with one remix after another: all stupidly good! If you’re a fan of happy Kawaii vibes infused in a cocktail of future bass, this is your jam. If not, well, wait 10 minutes and you’ll find yourself whistling to his Brockhampton take and smashing that follow button. Camoufly might be a new project, but it’s extremely satisfying to see that it’s already well structured, with such a clear vision and strategy. If the rumors that he already has 5 or more remixes in the pipeline are right, all we have to do is root for him waiting for his next extravaganza: go boy, fly high!

enfnt

Surprise! Another top-tiered French beat-maker is here to sweep you off your feet. This month, we’d like to draw your focus to enfnt, a talented producer who first caught our eye with the knocking yet mesmerizing ‘cycles‘ alongside fellow Frenchman tices and who has captivated it ever since with hypnotizing beats such as ‘target‘ and ‘yes, indeed.’ Whether he is resampling classic vocals or orchestrating a fully-instrumental piece, enfnt has demonstrated the ability to grab one’s attention and to keep it for the duration of each one of his tracks, offering a diverse mixture of meticulous melodies and hard-hitting trap beats. Thriving within the hub that is the French production scene, enfnt looks to make his name among the front-runners with his consistent, quality works. Don’t sleep.

FLIX

Hailing from what seems to be the bass capital of Canada, Québec based dubstep fanatic FLIX has quickly found himself making waves all across the world. Having appeared on industry leader Never Say Die’s Black Label with Calcium earlier this year, Félix-Antoine Raymond can often be found making waves with fellow Monsters madman MOTUS, either touring together or crafting killer collabs. Just as deep as his library of releases, FLIX’s tracks are capable of opening up a black hole while still providing brutally biting bounce (take recent ‘YOU GOT!‘ as an example). Able to wake the dead with his satanic sound design, his power takes many forms through dubstep and other like genres like DnB (see ‘Neuron‘ with MOTUS). Despite countless releases this year, it feels like FLIX is still just scratching the surface with new incensed exhibitions lurking around every corner!

IVES

Commanding melodies composed of jagged granular synths and plumes of ominous, seething bass at his fingertips, Nashville’s IVES is quickly developing into one of the most exciting projects of the experimental underground. First revealing the breadth of his audible storytelling capacity in his debut ILLUSION EP via Street Ritual in March of 2017, IVES has grown notorious for concocting mesmerizing euphonies such as the captivating digital lead in ‘Puzzling’ that toyingly prods and pulls at the peripheral senses. More recent experimentation, such as his Aspire Higher contribution ‘Tilted,’ depict IVES layering his signature titillating synth-work with troves of permeating bass that has only further groomed the impact of each track. Be sure to keep an eye out for Tennessee-native and beat puppeteer IVES in the coming year!

Keeth.

There’s a new wave rising on SoundCloud. A fresh trap sound that combines worldly elements, unrestricted hip hop samples, unrefined creativity and some incredible bounce. Almost every month in Focus Five I’ve been bringing an artist who’s been impressing me within this realm from inimicvs, to olswel, ledim, D0d and more. Operating in a similar space comes Keeth., a beatmaker reminding us that SoundCloud is still filled with gold if you know where to look (hint: Keeth.’s profile). We recently had the chance to premiere ‘Empire’ with Sykotix and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Keeth. has a multitude of slappers just waiting to get you bouncing. Want that raw trap energy? Check out ‘WZRD’. Want to hear Kendrick Lamar samples over a menacing trap knock that progresses into a jazzy future beat soundscape? Of course you do, and ‘SIGN’ is just that. Listening to Keeth. takes me back to the golden days of SoundCloud without sounding dated in the slightest, and that’s a feeling that’s hard to beat.

Focus Five is back with its 18th installment. As always we’re bringing you the hottest under-the-radar talent that you need to be listening to. This month we’ve got a mostly house music duo, vibey future beat, brutal trap, filthy half-time, and even some D&B. If one of these artists doesn’t wow you, we’ll give you your money back.

Cloverdale

Self-described “mostly house music” duo of Alex Walsh (AWAL) and Jarett MacNeil, Cloverdale are both rising like the tides and making splashes like the waves found at their hometown Halifax Harbour. Their recently released four track Talk To Me EP was so stirring it had The Prescription Records head Dr. Fresch call it “THE WORST HOUSE MUSIC I’VE EVER HEARD.” Able to evoke such a visceral response, this dirty, deep and dark mixture of G house and bass house displays the most polished power the duo has yet to deliver. That said, it’s clear these two were up to no good as their early originals ‘Eat That’ and ‘Funky Junky’ both brought about serious screw-faces and ungodly grooves. Obviously inspired by some of Dirtybird and Night Bass’s best (see their remixes of classics ‘Keepmastic’ and ‘OKAY’), Alex and Jarett seem to have found the perfect mix of classic quality and future fire.

EDP

EDP‘s ‘Dawn’ pretty much defines “a vibe.” From the stirring keys, to the sparkling synths and the gritty pitched rap samples, it’s top-tier future beat at its finest. The Californian beatmaker has proven that ‘Dawn’ was no fluke with a consistent stream of gems throughout 2019. Cuts like ‘gravity’ and ‘particles’ posses that perfect mixture of feels and knock that make future beat so sweet. His most recent release ‘Startup’ is a wavy love-song that captures the laid-back energy of California sunsets. If you’re looking for smooth grooves with just the right touch of bump, EDP is your dude. Oh and if you’re digging EDP, be sure to check out his family at SLIDERGANG.

FrostTop

For a Long Beach-native, emerging producer FrostTop’s style of music lives strictly in contrast to the popularized laid-back portrayal of California residents, specializing in a remorseless variety of trap music permeated with eclectic drums, orphic mixdowns, and staggering volumes of bass as depicted in infamous singles such as ‘Discharge’ and ‘Fracture’.

Shaping up to be his biggest year yet, 2019 has given rise to collaborative opportunities alongside NXSTY and Remk, an official remix for GAWM’s ‘Bowser’ and the opportunity to put together a 30-minute mix as a guest of the NXSTY MFKAS series. It goes without saying FrostTop is on the trajectory for a substantial career in electronic music and will be a name to keep a close eye on as the rest of the year unfolds.
Since the recent release of another halftime banger titled ‘Static,’ Nvctve has steadily grown into a uniquely aggressive sound that stands out among a plethora of up-and-coming halftime producers. In tracks such as ‘Duh’ and ‘Static,’ one really gets a feel for what the talented artist embodies, from their flawless meshing of melody and madness to their raw, unadulterated bass cataclysms. Instead of going viral on Tik Tok or similar platforms, for him everything started by just sending a demo to the right mastering company. What came next is already history. A record-breaking ‘If We Ever’ remix (which racked up 820k plays just on SoundCloud and has been voted Best Remix award in the latest Drum&BassArena Awards) and an exclusive contract with the legendary Hospital records. Not bad eh. Now, if you’re a newbie to the D&B scene and you feel a bit confused, don’t worry! That’s why Focus Five exists: to open your musical horizons and push them further and further. With less than 10 singles, in which he jumps from sub shuddering funk to tranquil liquid cuts to old-school jungle rollers, the 25 year old Brighton producer has proved to be a new enlightened bard of the drum&bass culture. But that’s not all. Despite the current industry constantly demands more and more viral content, Unglued has wisely declared that he wants to stick with a routine of 2/3 release per year. If you want to get familiar with D&B, hurry and get on board Unglued’s train because he’s definitely going places.
