As October ends we’re back with the 33rd installment of Focus Five. This month we’ve got some moody trap, a future beat beast, an artist defying genres, an experimental bass producer with some heavy hip hop influence, and a futuristic purveyor of vibes. Needless to say, you need to check them all out.

Delp

As the days get shorter and colder, it feels like it’s about that time for some moody trap shit. Enter the world of Delp. The Royal Collective member has all the dark trap sounds that you’re craving to get you through the winter. Crafting rich but ice cold soundscapes, the producer weaves in snapping drums and menacing 808s. Versatile but consistent, ‘Bound’ will have you bobbing your head and blowing Kush clouds, while ‘Muscle’ will get you puffing your chest out and throwing trap arms. Looking to further expand the palette? ‘Granite’ fuses regal leads with a gritty drill influence for a sound that feels luxuriously filthy. Put your hood up and rock to Delp.

godspeed

If you’ve spent a wealth of your time diving into the underground trap and future beat scene, chances are that you’re familiar with godspeed. For those who have not, it’s well overdue. godspeed’s sample game is absolutely absurd. From DMX barks and Pharrell adlibs, to Ludacris verses and Wu-Tang freestyles, to cartoon sound effects, memes and fart sounds, you’re never quite sure what godspeed may throw into a track. The wildness of the sound is matched with the calibre of production that’s filled with precise percussion and brings an abundance of knock. Tracks like ‘come on’ and ‘throw some’ put godspeed on the map, but recent collabs with aedfx. and yugi boi x DILIP are taking the artist to new heights. The latter is an absolute trap monster that combines stirring strings, emotive undertones and exotic layers with a gritty knock. If you’re looking for some gems, godspeed’s SoundCloud is a diamond mine.

Mike Snatchers

You all are expecting some haunting and gothic vibes today, am I right? Fine, let’s listen to some samba instead. Yes. Samba, with a pinch of Portuguese lyrics and a good dose of tight sound design. I’m not making this up randomly, I’m simply listing some of the surprises you’ll find in The Snatch Tape, the latest release from my pick for this edition of Focus Five: Mike Snatchers. Unlike in pretty much every other edition of this column, where I’ve featured the artists only after following their steps for a while, with Mike I completely trusted my instinct. In fact, before he emailed me a week ago, I’ve never heard of him. Once I blasted the Tape in my headphones a single time though, my spider-sense was already quivering. Personally, I don’t care that he’s mostly doing very short tracks (none over 3 minutes), all that matters to me is that he’s not playing safe. Every piece, even if it’s just a beat, is perfectly crafted down to the tiniest details to be unique. There’s so much to enjoy that I haven’t decided what I love most about him yet. It would be his effervescent creativity? His fantastic sound design? I have the feeling that I’ll have plenty of time to think about it following his rise.

Mindset

Philadelphia-native Timmy Walker has swiftly garnered respect for the abstract soundscapes, distorted bass frequencies, and subtle hip hop influences he concocts under the alias Mindset. Retaining an exhaustive list of collaborations alongside the likes of Tsimba, tiedye ky, and FRQ NCY, as well as an extensive repertoire of self-captained originals and a slew of remixes, Mindset maintains a nearly seamless fluidity between projects, while consistently striving for innovation in each of his works. Keep an eye out for Mindset as he continues to test the boundaries of his sound.

Thorjn

Thorjn‘s introduction to the world came in June of 2019 with the laid-back ballad titled ‘June.’ The track, which can be described as a groovy, lo-fi leaning melodic bop, set the stage for the subsequent singles that furthered this unique style of pairing ethereal soundscapes and crisp bass undertones. Since then, Thorjn has impressed with the rapid diversification of his sound and ceaseless ingenuity. From ‘Ochre’ alongside Gater to the more recent ‘Careful,’ Thorjn has quickly evolved into a producer capable of defying genre boundaries in the span of a single track, reminiscent of Ekcle in style yet unique enough to stand out on its own. Instead of trying to do it justice with words, we recommend you dive into Thorjn’s short yet impressive discography with no expectations, as each track will provide a different experience than the last.

Netherlands producer, composer, and performer BeauDamian never ceases to surprise with the dexterity of his craft. With roots tethered to future bass, BeauDamian has a propensity to elicit a tangible synergy in his extensive arsenal of live edits, which provided the necessary foundation for the talented Dutch artist to blossom into the diverse breadth of styles he creates today. Revisiting an early bitbird release, ‘No Know’ illustrates BeauDamian working cohesively with ethereal synths and commanding horns, while the bass-heavy backbone provides a palatable rhythm and groove to the tune.

As September comes to a close Focus Five returns with yet another installment. This month we’ve got a rising talent from Chicago, the finest Norwegian trap you’ve ever heard, two Aussies delivering unique sounds, and yet another Portland-based bass producer you need to know. Dive in below.

aviate

aviate is a fitting name for a producer ascending the ranks of the underground. The Chicago-based producer is part of Suburbia Collective alongside FUXWITHIT favourite LYNY. Unsurprisingly, he first landed on our radar with his Kelis flipping, LYNY collab ‘DIAMONDS.’ Fusing cartoony samples, nostalgic hip-hop and trunk pounding trap, it’s simply irresistible. In the past few months he’s proved to be consistent with a bouncy ‘G6’ flip and slapping collabs with RAFTYR and drak x llewop. If you love that pure uncut SoundCloud trap sound, you better hop on a flight with aviate.

borny

When I stumbled onto borny’s profile I saw 3 things: he had just over 400 followers, he was from Norway and every track was tagged as trap. My initial thought was Norwegian trap? Ooh, this could be interesting… Fittingly ‘found’ was the first track I pressed played upon and had my hopeful expectations exceeded. What began as a foggy downtempo intro quickly morphed before my eyes. Rap adlibs, spacy synths, pounding percussion and exotic woodwinds mingled amidst a gritty drop that was beautifully disorienting. Proving to be no fluke, every one of borny’s five releases this year posses the same incredibly captivating yet banging aesthetic. I’m often impressed but seldom this blown away off one listen through an artist’s SoundCloud spotlight. borny is everything I want from trap right now.

ethanplus

You know that you’re onto something when your editor answers back, “now this is what I’m talking about!” after you sent in some tunes. I don’t know you, but personally I find the idea of both of us jamming on the same song at 6000 kilometers away incredibly satisfying. To be completely honest, I think that ethanplus could make you move even if you’re asleep. His music has that plus (pun intended) that knows how to stimulate your brain. All the three songs he has released so far are absolute slappers. Four minutes and eleven seconds (plus one other on his side account ethanplusPLUS) of beats full of flavors and fantasy. Take ‘2charged’ for example. One moment you’re enjoying a trap banger, you blink your eyes, and some weird flute sample and a jazz piano have appeared out of nowhere. We don’t have much info about ethanplus, but here at FUXWITHIT we are all very curious to see what’s coming next!
LANKI

Don’t let LANKI‘s moniker fool you – this man’s tunes are thick and meaty. First appearing on my radar in late 2018 as a result of his collaboration with Leotrix on Buygore, it wasn’t until their second collaboration on Never Say Die: Black Label titled ‘Make Death’ that I really started paying attention to the Sydney-based producer’s talents. More recently, LANKI has been putting out unique pieces that showcase the artist’s ingenuity when it comes to concocting bass brutes, teetering the lines between dubstep, trap, and experimental bass, with ‘WAX’ being a prime example. Hot off a massive collaboration with Jon Casey on Vision Recordings’ MISSION 01 compilation, few appear to have a future brighter than LANKI. Stop sleeping, and dive into his short yet impressive repertoire.

tsou

Portland’s tsou has persistently challenged his production capabilities over the course of the past 3 years, carving a unique niche in the realm of leftfield bass with an inexplicable talent in establishing a palatable groove and cadence within each release, despite the diversity in energy that each track might contain. The recently released broken hearts anonymous EP further exemplifies tsou’s dexterity, composing an emotional sonic narrative that ranges from gripping halftime melodies in ‘old soul’ and ‘tribe’ to the experimental tempos of ‘promise II’ and ‘mental’. With a continually growing repertoire of original compositions, remixes, edits, and collaborations, tsou is shaping up to have a remarkable future career.

A New Orleans-based producer with an exhaustive periphery of worldly, cultural, and instrumental influences Savej makes an impressionable entrance to Gravitas Recordings with the release of his six-track Solstice album. “There’s something to be said about taking a truly organic sound or instrument and digitally manipulating it with modern production techniques,” Savej reflects regarding how the project cohesively blends native flutes, tribal percussion, and throat singing with more modern production practices. “I find that the infusion of modern production with world vibes and tribal rhythms can really facilitate connection with something primordial that exists within us all,” he continues regarding how his integration of various stylistic components creates both an audible delicacy as well as a lasting impression of interconnection.

Timed perfectly on the cusp of summer in anticipation of the fall equinox, Solstice opens with impeccable groove and rhythm of the title track as Savej contrasts the deep resonating frequencies of his Kargyraa-style throat singing with a luscious melody of plucked strings. The journey deepens as the native flutes and insatiable ceremonial Peruvian whistling of ‘One Truth’ create a perfectly resonating harmony that only further highlights the nearly seamless fluidity between the project’s vast cultural components. A state of trance begins to settle in as the allure of tribal chanting further accentuates the incisive percussion intricacies of ‘Eye For An I,’ before revealing the lush melodies and spatial freedom of ‘Sirens’. The project reaches an apex of sensations at the opening of the ‘Equinox’, which carries a celebratory sensation, comprehensively blending entrancing flutes, textured throat singing, and poignant horns. ‘Vilca’ sets in as a point of reflection for the journey as the project reaches its conclusion, but the impression it has left will exist forevermore.

Take a moment to collectively celebrate the conclusion of summer, the entrance of fall, and the release of Savej’s Solstice album via Gravitas Recordings below!

An artist draped in an alluring mystique and tantalizing ambiguity, Los Angeles-based James is one of SoundCloud’s many niche creative minds, gaining an elusive prestige for his ability to craft a gripping emotional ambiance in both his solo efforts and his slew of exquisite remixes. Placing emphasis on quality far beyond quantity, James’ discography totals less than 10 tracks spread across the span of a three year period before tapering off entirely following the release of his sensational original ‘Peach’ in the dwindling hours of 2016. Revisiting his first track to greet the public ear, James’ take on ‘Trying To Be Cool’ brilliantly depicts a collision of genres, preserving the unmistakable vocal notes and indie climate of the track, while providing a tasteful modern twist.

At the conclusion of April last year, audiovisual production icons Zebbler and Encanti revealed the scope of their latest project, unleashing the long-anticipated End Trance EP via Wakaan Records under the collaborative guise of the Zebbler Encanti Experience (ZEE). Resting in congruence with the growing propensity for free-flowing sound structures and experimental basslines that have become synonymous with Liquid Stranger’s Wakaan imprint, the eclectic textures and deep-end bass frequencies of the End Trance EP created both a lasting impression and a penchant appetite for more.

The forthcoming End Trance (Remixes) EP is positioned to heighten the impact of the original project, presenting the opportunity for a handful of supremely creative production minds to further the progress of the project within their own vision. The first to reveal the fruits of his labor, Los Angeles-based FLY breaks the silence with his take on ‘End Trance’. Proven to be a more than ideal candidate for the opportunity, FLY possesses an exhaustive catalog of diverse sounds and textures and has an immense talent for composing an insatiable groove and rhythm within even his more experimental bodies of work.

The sharp, crisp preference of FLY’s style meshes exquisitely with the free-flowing melodies and basslines of Zebbler and Encanti to create a contrast that rests tangibly on the ears. Preserving the hypnotic entrance melody to the track, FLY begins to weave his magic as the steely echoing of percussion deepens the anticipation of the first build. A thundering of drums heaves the track into an eclectic breakdown of deep bass notes and grumbling low frequencies that seem to maintain the same rhythm and cadence of the original track but with vastly contrasting sounds and textures to give that unmistakable FLY flavor.

Be sure to check out FLY’s take on ‘End Trance’ out now via Wakaan, and keep an eye out for the remainder of the remixes dropping throughout the week!

Prior to founding the eclectic label bitbird, which furnishes a platform for the softer delicacies of indie and electronic music, San Holo worked considerably with iconic Paris production trio Point Point. Working congruously with one another, in what one might consider the earliest infancy of both artist’s future trajectory, created a variety of opportunities for both direct and indirect collaboration. Of such items, ‘Hiding,’ selected from the second volume of Point Point’s coveted Filet Mignon compilation released in the spring of 2014 provides a primitive glance into the foundation of future bass, while also presenting an opportunity to derive some of the preliminary inspirations of both San Holo and fellow bitbird artist The Nicholas.

Take a moment to relive ‘Hiding’ from San Holo ft. The Nicholas below, and be sure to grab your free copy of the entire Filet Mignon Volume II Compilation as a direct download from SoundCloud here.

As the summer continues to roll by we’re back with another installment of Focus Five. As expected we’ve rounded up 5 fresh artists that you need to familiarize yourself with. We’ve got French future beats, Michigan based-bass, a dnb egirl, a promising wave producer, and a grade-A SoundCloud trap producer. Dive into this month’s feature below.

AP11

France’s output of phenomenal future beat producers is seemingly endless. Hailing from Lyon, AP11 has been bubbling on our radar for over a year. His contribution to the impressive Outsider Paris compilation alongside tices was a sure standout, combining exotic and wordly sound palettes with his signature knock. AP11’s style is rap inspired with a futuristic approach and a keen ability to craft bangers. There may be no better example than their latest release Krunk. to embody this. From the lush, foreign strings to the mesmerizing plucks, it’s nearly transcendent while packing an absolutely filthy trap grittiness. Add in pitched down rap vocals and it simply doesn’t get much better than this. French future beats are taking over and AP11 is helping to lead the charge.

BRUNCHBEATZ

Born and raised in Michigan, Quin Seabolt is quickly accumulating momentum behind his production alias BRUNCHBEATZ. A recent signee to Electric Hawk, Seabolt is widely regarded for possessing a diverse range of styles at even the earliest infancy in his career, with tracks such as ‘SCRAMBLED’ that range from a more eclectic variety of trap to a more aggressive dubstep, as depicted in ‘SMOKED’. In addition to his solo efforts, Seabolt has found a tactical opportunity to mesh both the sounds and imagery from branding into his own unique format of remixes coined ‘RE SCRAMBLES’. Much like the dining spread at a late morning buffet, there’s a variety of potential in BRUNCHBEATZ.

gyrofield

Ever since landing on my radar with the incredibly infectious ‘Out Of My Mind’ ft. inkwill over a year ago, I’ve been meaning to feature gyrofield on our Focus Five segment. The irresistibly danceable tune catapulted the Hong Kong-based artist to the top of the underground drum and bass scene, and with every subsequent release gyrofield has shown that her skills are only continuing to evolve, often exploring other genres with equal prowess. With a solid arsenal of original tracks under her belt, as well as a handful of unofficial remixes including an insanely catchy remix for AuRa and Alan Walker’s ‘Ghost,’ it’s evident that gyrofield has the ability to pump out quality hits on a regular basis, and with a forthcoming single on the coveted Pilot Records in early August, it’s only a matter of time before gyrofield becomes a household name.

Ivoryghost

While the wave scene is quite busy with an internal feud between the wave and hardwave formations, as a humble fan as I am, I prefer to simply focus on finding good music and brilliant creatives, regardless of genre. Ivoryghost is a name that I’ve seen popping up in my SoundCloud feed for a while thanks to his crossover remix of Joji and Lana del Rey and his appearance on pivotal networks like Yume and Sekai Collective, but now I believe it’s finally time to bring him to the spotlight. With the release of his brand new EP, the project has indeed reached maturity for me. In each one of the five tracks, the Dutch producer masterfully interprets wave’s signature mood in a different fashion. You’ll find wave and hardwave vibes of course, but also garage, house and ambient. With a huge release already signed by one of the biggest label in the game, I have high expectations from ivoryghost from now on.

SALLA

What’s better in this life than some grade-A underground SoundCloud trap? The most succinct answer is, “Not much.” Deep into one of my nightly binges of the seedy underbelly of the SoundCloud game, I found an account with a gigantic sound, but a currently small following. Not much is known about Salla, but he has 2 tracks that would be on-par with producers that have 100x the followers he already has. ‘Cook It Up‘ has inordinate amounts of bounce and a groove that will have your hips shaking until they fall off your entire body. ‘Lift‘ is shorter on the energy, but just as tall in style and ambiance. For fans of that gritty underground trap, Salla is definitely one to keep your eye on.
