In 2013, I had the pleasure of discovering Soulection. This label was and still is an absolute titan of the SoundCloud music scene, pushing forward-thinking and soulful house music for well over a decade now. I can’t count how many artists I’ve discovered thanks to their expert curation, but I’d like to introduce one of my favorites here. I heard the track ‘Magic Drum Machine‘ for the first time after six years of listening to Soulection’s weekly radio show. The sheer groove of the drums with the lyrics of Bell Biv DeVoe’s ‘Poison‘ overlaid had me thinking it must be some new artist I hadn’t heard of from LA, or Chicago, or maybe Detroit. I couldn’t have been further off (literally). Across the pond in a sunny corner of Eastern Europe, the duo Magic Flowers has entered the chat.

Since the fateful day I heard that track for the first time, Magic Flowers hasn’t skipped a beat. I’ve been a raving fan of nearly every one of their releases, ranging from eclectic house beats to ratchet trap edits and everything in between. I couldn’t be more happy to share them with you today. I hope you’re ready to catch a vibe, because these boys came proper!

We’re excited to hear this mix you’ve put together! Can you give us an idea of what our listeners should expect to hear?

With our mix, we want to immerse you in the world of house music. Here, you can hear our releases, unreleased tracks, as well as the tracks we listen to in our headphones or play at parties.

You guys are based in Moldova, correct? I think that’s a pretty unfamiliar corner of the world for a lot of our readers. Can you tell us a bit about what the music scene is like where you live?

Yes, that’s right, we are from Moldova. It’s a small, sunny country neighboring Romania and Ukraine. It’s hard to say that we have a developed music industry, as everything is in the creation stage. Therefore, we strive to introduce people to new music, create parties so that people can discover something new, and in doing so, inspire others, thereby expanding the scene in the country and beyond.

How did you two meet? What led you to making music together as a duo instead of solo projects?

The story of how we met is that the right people introduced and connected us at the right time (Alex was involved in music production, and Vasile performed as a DJ in a creative promo team). After realizing that we shared the same musical tastes, we decided to join forces and show the world Magic Flowers, our vibe, and style!

Your music really transcends a number of genres, fusing elements of trap, house, garage, etc. Could you tell us about some of your musical inspirations and what they mean to you?

You correctly noted that we can’t classify ourselves within a specific genre because we love music deeply (Both Alex and Vasile danced in early childhood). As we grew older, we explored new styles and genres, simultaneously sharing our vision with the world. When we started Magic Flowers, some of our main inspirations were Soulection. We liked and still like every artist released there, and all the music played on their radio show and in their community. We always dreamed that our track would someday be played there. So, when it happened, we realized we were on the right track and that all our ideas were not just fantasies but achievable goals – the main thing is to believe and do what you love.

What is your music-making process like? Do you tend to just experiment in the studio, or do you have concrete ideas that you like to build on when you’re writing a new track?

We don’t think we have a specific process for creating music. Most often, we share different music and samples, then develop an idea around 1-2 samples, turning it into a loop and then into a full track. It can be a remix or an original track; the most important thing is its mood.

Would you say you make music more for yourselves, or for your listeners? Do you ever feel pressured to change a track you’ve written because it might not be what listeners expect?

Honestly, we don’t feel strong pressure from listeners. Of course, we have some mild concerns about our various releases, as today we might release a House track, tomorrow a Jungle track, and the day after, UK Garage. But in each of these tracks, you can hear our signature, our vision, so in each of them, you can hear Magic Flowers. We have developed and continue to develop our sound and style so that people can recognize us. You could say that we want to surprise our listeners and show them something new without just following their lead.

Do you have any big plans in store for the rest of 2024?

Regarding our plans for 2024, we would like to travel more and perform outside our country, sharing our vibe worldwide. Right now, we are focused on working so that by autumn we can travel more. This summer, we will perform at the cool and large Electric Castle festival in Romania, which is also very important for us as we will be playing for an audience that knows little about us. Therefore, we want to give them a pleasant surprise so they continue this journey with us. Of course, we plan to release many tracks and strive to release music regularly.

Two-part question! What’s your biggest accomplishment in your eyes, and conversely, what’s a goal you’ve always wanted to achieve but haven’t yet?

As we mentioned earlier, some of our inspirations were and remain artists from the Soulection community. For us, the most gratifying thing was that our tracks started appearing there, which was a major boost for us as artists, giving us the strength and motivation to keep working. Another goal for us is to perform at Boiler Room, to showcase our taste and vibe, and introduce people to new music!

Who are some artists on your radar right now that our readers might not know about?

We definitely recommend you listen to such up-and-coming producers and DJs as GEE LEE (we played our new unreleased track with him in this mix), Jack Marlow, and Tui.

Do you have any words of wisdom for aspiring producers?

The most important thing is to do what you love, whether it’s dancing, music, graffiti, skateboarding, or anything else. The main thing is to enjoy it, as any activity you love will always grow. Especially to musicians, DJs, producers, and artists, we want to say to always follow the path you have chosen and believe in it because everything will work out if you believe in what you do and love your craft. It may sound cliché, but we believe in and love what we do and want to pass on this vibe.

UNDER THE ILLUSION at first seems like a far cry from his early 2010s forays into breakbeats, trap, and future beats, but the reality is that this EP is an incredible display of the cumulative talent that Sam Gellaitry has spent the better part of the last decade refining. Since he began making music as a youngster in the hills of Scotland, he has received critical acclaim from the likes of Soulection, BBC Radio 1, Boiler Room, Music is the Answer, and a host of other outlets and artists. Perhaps best described as a musical prodigy, the sheer breadth and range of Gellaitry’s output is truly staggering. UNDER THE ILLUSION is no exception and serves to remind listeners that nothing is off-limits if it sounds good.

Inspired by the likes of Sampha, James Blake, and Toro y Moi, Gellaitry has in recent years begun experimenting more with his own vocals alongside his iconic production. The result is a cohesive project which aims for each track to be more than “just a beat,” as he describes in a recent interview with Lucid Monday. Evolving his sound is the goal and in that respect, UNDER THE ILLUSION is a stand-out step forward.

The melodies and vocals on UNDER THE ILLUSION are reminiscent of old 1980s synth-pop hits from the likes of New Order, Gary Numan, and The Human League. The near-minimalist approach and clever use of empty space Gellaitry used when producing tracks like ‘LONG DISTANCE‘ and ‘Monochrome‘ in the past has been replaced with an array of feel-good, bouncy synths and guitar riffs played by the man himself.

‘UNDER THE ILLUSION’ and ‘ALONE’ perfectly capture this new direction of sound. Gellaitry’s voice is an instrument unto itself with the way the tracks have been mastered, blending seamlessly with the wall of sounds underneath. ‘LIKE THIS / LIKE THAT’ is a slower, more pensive track with deeper vocals and a chunky bass guitar riff that absolutely will get stuck in listeners’ heads. The characteristic Gellaitry groove makes a return in ‘THINK I KNOW’ with bass-heavy percussion and similarly deep vocals. Seemingly a callback to the sounds of his prior projects, this experimental, bass-heavy masterpiece is a welcome addition as the final track of the EP.

If an evolution of his sound is what Sam Gellaitry is trying to achieve with UNDER THE ILLUSION, it’s safe to say he’s nailed it. The future is indeed bright for this producer. Gellaitry has at times hinted at his interest in producing and composing for visual media, such as short films or video games. With that in mind, perhaps the next project will stray even further from the sounds that initially made him famous as a teenager. With such a dedicated fanbase, whatever direction he chooses to take next is sure to blow listeners away. Until then, stream UNDER THE ILLUSION below.

Reaching way beyond the realms of the electronic space, DROELOE has masterfully perfected his appealing sound which ranges across genres such as future bass, pop, indie, and much more. Building a global fan base of like-minded music lovers who are not afraid to dig deep into the beauty of electronic music, DROELOE is definitely one of a kind and we are all here for it. Revealing his fourth and final single ahead of his album release on September 15, DROELOE has released his emotive single ‘Downside Up’ and it is truly breathtaking to the ears.

With DROELOE calling upon LA-based alt-pop-rock sensation Transviolet, ‘Downside Up’ is a truly motivational track that grows in strength and determination. As gentle piano chords and soothing vocals flow immaculately, DROELOE surprises his listeners as a fury of drum and bass takes over. Guiding the light even during the darkest of days, DROELOE has once again surpassed all limits with ‘Downside Up’ as he continues to dominate the music industry. As we count the days until the release of his highly-anticipated album, the album takes listeners on a journey through time and place, using recorded voice memos as a ‘feedback loop’ where DROELOE’s present self engages in conversations with his past and future selves with snippets taken from audio cassettes and journal entries to help him grow each day. Fans are now able to pre-order his debut solo album and vinyl on Bandcamp here.

‘We were very much in sync with what we wanted to say with the song, and the catharsis that we wanted to convey with it. It was an awesome experience turning that story into such a powerful poetic metaphor’
DROELOE returns with an emotive, yet energizing single ‘Feeble Games.’

With powerful vocals and slow-tempo basslines becoming apparent, DROELOE is taking listeners into a world of positivity and aims to help listeners find the desire to find something to fight for rather than struggle against. As prolonged frequencies and uplifting chimes craft a beautiful uptempo beat, DROELOE is proving his sound design is definitely one of a kind in the industry. Accompanied by a stunning 360-degree lyric visualizer by acclaimed animator Funi as well as the launch of a new journal merch item, ‘Feeble Games’ is a long-awaited comeback statement from an artist notorious for cryptic messages, codes, and games, that will have fans bending over backwards trying to figure out what might be coming next.

On November 8th, 2022, Flume released ‘Slugger 1.4,’ a track made in 2014 that never got to see the light of day after it was made. On November 9th, 2022, he tweeted “there’s more.’ With an “I promise” quote retweet coming on January 26th of this year, many were left anticipating the big return of the generational artist.

The wait is now over, as the Australian veteran has unleashed a ten-track collection of tunes aptly titled Things Don’t Always Go The Way You Plan. In the words of Flume, “It’s been ten years since my first record came out, since then I’ve written a lot a lot music and not all of it has seen the light of day. After seeing the reaction to ‘Slugger 1.4’ and how much love it got, I figured it would be fun to release more of these forgotten ideas I from my old laptops.” What an amazing time to be a Flume fan!

Spanning ten years of time, the tracks in the ensemble showcase the undeniable evolution and versatility of the artist. From 2012’s ‘Why 1.3’ reminiscent of his older works, to 2020’s ‘Nice 2 Know U 1.5.3’ and ‘SPOKE 2 ALIENS FINALLY 1.3’ that mirror his Hi This Is Flume era, each track tells its own unique story. With more simple ideas such as ‘beat 58 1.1,’ and more hashed out productions such as ‘Counting Sheep (V2) featuring Injury Reserve, fans are sure to find a favourite in Things Don’t Always Go The Way You Plan, even if not every track tickles one’s fancy.

The best part is that Flume dubbed this “the first batch of tracks.” Until more news comes, dive into Things Don’t Always Go The Way You Plan below.

Creating a new project and leaving another behind is one of the most difficult things to do as an artist, as it comes with the uncertainty of knowing if fans are going to follow your journey. It’s a leap of faith into unknown territory and ultimately requires bravery. The latest and bravest to do this is the artist formerly known as Ian Munro, and the change in alias to munro comes with the following message: “new project, new name, new sound.” As long-time supporters, we can’t wait to see what the future holds.

Announced in May, the birth of munro is finally complete today with the release of his first single ‘Every Day (Is Always The Same)’ via the ever-exciting Quality Goods Records. It’s not the first time that the New Zealand-based artist teams up with the label, but it’s amazing to see the mutual relationship extend beyond the Ian Munro alias. Featuring fellow Kiwi harvest, ‘Every Day (Is Always The Same)’ is an emotional ballad balancing vocal breaks and garage-leaning cuts that beautifully showcase the evolution in munro’s sound. It’s a careful blending of melancholy and hopefulness, as dark bass and cold strings are countered by groovy percussion and majestic melodies. Spanning almost four minutes, the latest from munro is addictive and infectious. Don’t miss it below.

Eyezic is on a roll. The Washington-based producer has been dropping nothing but bangers, bops and vibes. Landing on labels like Quality Goods Records, phuture collective, Space Yacht, Subsidia, and bitbird, plus dropping official remixes for QUIX and tails, there’s no stopping the talented producer. Gearing up for his new EP Letters To Myself Eyezic finds himself back on Quality Goods Records. ‘Hurting’ is the first single from the upcoming project and gives fans a taste of what to expect.

‘Hurting’ was written during a time that I had a rough time with my significant other. We were going through a lot of rough patches that almost seemed like we didn’t know what the outcome was. Through long discussions, and good laughs we made it work out in the end. Obviously, all that glitters isn’t gold, but there is something good from it when you really fight for it.

The dark lyrics with the upbeat tempo of the song really speaks for that. This EP really compliments the “feel good, and the bad.” As well as portrays the ‘signature’ sound that I’m going for here in the future. I’m just very thankful y’all are here for the ride
– Eyezic

Finding beauty in the dark times ‘Hurting,’ is an emotional journey that contrasts two distinct vibes. TetraTara’s vocals are ripe with pain and struggle. From the lyrics to the voice behind them, there’s a distinct sense of sadness and turmoil. On the flip side, the drops unravel into an upbeat and energetic sound that feels like the sun breaking through the clouds on a stormy day. The ups and downs capture the dichotomy often experience in relationships while the driving beat provides a sense of hopefulness even among the uncertainty. If you’ve ever wanted to get lost in your feels while dancing the night away, this is your ticket.

Stream ‘Hurting’ below and look out for Eyezic’s upcoming EP later this summer.

As 2022 came to fruition, Flume was among the first to announce that this year would be the year for a new album. Ever since, anticipation has been building towards the release of Palaces, with the legendary artist gracing us with a handful of versatile singles to scratch our itch. From the pop-leaning, yet still quintessential Flume-sounding ‘Say Nothing’ with MAY-A, to the highly-awaited ‘ESCAPE’ alongside QUIET BISON and KUČKA, the Australian artist has continued to push the boundaries of his productions. Additionally, in similar fashion to Hi This Is Flume, the creative has demonstrated that an album can be so much more than music, tying in extraordinary artwork and videos to complement the sonic experience along the way. All that has culminated to the release of Palaces, and as a project altogether, the album surpasses all expectations once again. And that’s what makes Flume a legend.

The project opens with ‘Highest Building’ featuring vocals from Oklou, and right off the bat, Flume showcases his masterful ability to create a radio-friendly hit that still resonates with fans of more eclectic electronic music – something he does repeatedly throughout the album. The vocals provide a catchy hook to lure listeners in, and the production knocks it out of the park with its emphatic energy.

Palaces only gets better from there. Mirroring the vibrance of the artwork, the album is colourful and enthralling, with thirteen individual tracks contributing to a complete listening experience. Never escaping the future bass sound that he has championed time and time again while simultaneously never letting it grow stale, Flume has created an auditory experience unlike any other. From the ‘Wall Fuck’ equivalent in ‘Get U,’ to the chill-inducing piano in ‘Jasper’s Song,’ to the surprising hyperpop experiment ‘Only Fans’ alongside Virgen Maria, Flume keeps listeners on their toes one track after the next.

As diverse and entertaining as it is, the true beauty behind Palaces is the tracks that showcase classic Flume with a 2022 twist. ‘DHLC,’ ‘Love Light’ and ‘Go,’ among others, boast the sound that fans fell in love with years ago, and it’s that nostalgia factor that ties the project together. No matter how far Flume has come, no matter how famous he has become, it’s tracks such as these that remind you of his roots, and that make the project so enthralling and easy to listen to on repeat. Accompanied by another mesmerizing visualizer, it’s safe to say that Flume is back. Don’t miss Palaces below.

Across genres and generations, electronic music icon Flume and promising producer QUIET BISON have released a hallucinogenic epic of a song; one many fans have been waiting for, and one certainly worth that wait. ‘ESCAPE’ (featuring one of Flume’s favorite vocalists, KUČKA) is an enchanting new listen while remaining reminiscent of Flume’s classic pioneering sound. QUIET BISON’s careful attention to sampling and a hypnotic arrangement brings something entirely new to the distinctive Flume-future-bass sound. An astounding feat for the 21-year-old, who has often drawn comparisons to Flume with his own vibrant and futuristic textures.

For many fans, this has been a long-anticipated collaboration, as one Reddit user described on the Flume subreddit more than 2 years ago “if Flume is Palpatine, Quiet Bison is Darth Vader.” QUIET BISON himself has cited Flume as one of his major musical influences since the beginning of his career.

The song itself delivers on this long-awaited promise. Beginning with shimmering, delicate bells and KUČKA’s gossamer vocals, the song seats itself within a scintillating atmosphere. This is propelled into a futuristic foray via a soft pad and a sharp, rolling snare. The sweep is peppered with KUČKA vocal chops. A thick, distorted kick drum then comes in on the drop, pulsating and grounded. This change is met with staccato vocal chops and new, buoyant and irregular synth. The effect is shocking and beautiful, propelling listeners into a mesmerizing menagerie of sound.

The song transitions into its second verse via an even more distorted synth. KUČKA continues with lyrics that seem to fit the inventive atmosphere of the collaboration, as they pen, “Old roads to re-trace, new ideas to embrace. Take hold, watch it translate. Make it easy to relate, to relate….Ex-communicate, I just wanted to escape.”

The song’s final drop is an explosion of sound design battering against a metallic snare, seemingly sharper than before. These two sound design savants attack with synths that are fiercely futuristic and emancipated, yet the song remains steady as if a boat beating itself through a metallic sea. In a moment, the song is gone, and the wild ‘ESCAPE’ listeners are led through disappears, ready for listeners to repeat. It is safe to say that both artists have reached new peaks in this piece.
