Good Society has been a budding event promoter in the trap and future beats space over the last couple of years, but their lineups are getting more and more stacked with each and every party. For their next event, they’re bringing the vibes to 1720 Warehouse in Los Angeles on November 4!

Super grateful to everyone who’s rocking with us to make this show happen. There’s a lot of trust being instilled in Good Society right now, as one of the newer promoters coming up in the scene, that I hope to return 10 times over.

JOSH YAMINI, FOUNDER OF GOOD SOCIETY

The record label/live event company will be throwing a show every month for the rest of the year, hoping to expand into different territories and eventually a music festival. In partnership with digital streaming service, Audius, Good Society is throwing this event with FUXWITHIT favorites like Vindata and episcool, and even our label launching artist, capshun! We’re hyped to see Lophiile throw down in person and headliner Alexander Lewis‘ throwback set. Really hoping a trap horn gets blown in my face.

“This show is sort of a hallmark for Good Society. I’m bringing together many of my favorite artists, each of whom has pioneered different corners of the same scene, and it’s all going down at 1720 which is a hub of the culture in LA. W’s all around for the team,” Founder Josh Yamini expresses. “It’ll also be one of our few shows, up until this point, hosting live instruments as Alexander Lewis showcases his signature blend of hip hop, trap, and jazz with the trombone. I’m definitely going to lose my shit when that happens haha.”

If you’re looking for Alexander Lewis‘s signature trap horns, you’re not going to find them in Blue. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t listen to it. The musician started gaining notoriety in 2018, playing alongside huge trap artists like Ekali and KRANE at Brownies & Lemonade stages across the country. But in this project, he shows off his chops in hip-hop, jazz, and R&B… and we couldn’t be happier.

Now, Alexander Lewis doesn’t completely abandon his trombone. Instead, he finds creative ways to incorporate it into these tracks for a soul-infused hip-hop sound. However, this is nothing new. Here at FUXWITHIT, we’re loving this subgenre of hip-hop. In recent months, we’ve been following names like KYLE. and Kota the Friend closely, so Blue was right up our alley.

Blue is relatable. The album highlights the struggles of balancing your career, love, and mental health, as the world is crashing around you. ‘Hear Me Out’ is a great example of this, crying out for a sense of self and stability. The song recognizes the sadness and uncertainty someone could feel, even when it seems like everything is going well.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/787749022″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”300″ iframe=”true” /]

We weren’t surprised to see Brasstracks featured on the record. Boasting similar sounds, the Brooklyn duo often brings Lewis out on the stage when they’re on tour. The two horn-playing musical acts collaborate on ‘Melancholy.’ It’s a short and sweet track exploring some of the same situations, teaching us that money won’t fix all of our problems.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/797715811″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”300″ iframe=”true” /]

The second half of the album focuses mostly on love, which is quintessential for an R&B record. The eponymous track ‘Blue’ is another short song, but it’s jam-packed with emotion. ‘Blue’ examines what it’s like to fall in love (like a vacation) and what it’s like to feel heartbreak. As the voicemail plays in the back, you’ll be brought back to a vivid memory in your life, where someone has broken your heart.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/787748869″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”300″ iframe=”true” /]

Blue is not void of passion and emotion. It’s one of those albums you can play through when you’re feeling blue, and want to feel understood. For a certified sadgirl like me, I can guarantee this will be sitting alongside Take Care and Ctrl, for whenever I’m in the mood to reminisce about my exes. And while I love Alexander Lewis’ trap horns, I wasn’t disappointed in this project at all. The progress of his creative direction hasn’t been lost on us and we’re excited to keep following whatever he makes next.

Since becoming a SoundCloud favourite a few years back with collaborations alongside KRANE, impressive originals and massive reworks of Mr. Carmack and Hudson Mohawke, Alexander Lewis has been refining his talent and strength as a producer. His 2018 EP OMNI. showcased his versatility moving between funky R&B cuts, raw rap and his highly-regarded orchestral trap sound. Today he returns with a fresh body of work in Red EP.

The 6 track effort is more refined and thematic then any of his previous releases. Each work is inspired by the album’s namesake combining massive brass with heavy bass and rap influence. ‘Soar,’ ‘Strategy’ and ‘Left U on Red’ showcase his instrumental talents and are assured to please longtime fans. Meanwhile ‘Win The War’ and ‘Energy’ lean more into his rap side with features from B.Anderson on both and William on the latter. The aptly-title ‘Alexander the Great’ rounds the project out, serving as a chest-pounding, battle-ready anthem that reminds you how great Alexander really is. Red proves Alexander Lewis continues to get better with each release.

Stream the project below and be sure to check out our interview with Alexander below. We spoke to him about the project, what Red represents to him, the future of his live sets, his goals for 2019, and what’s next for him.

What does the colour red represent to you? How does it translate to the body of work you’ve created?

Red kinda represents chaos to me. It can be organized chaos, disorganized, battle, fights with a loved one, money issues, etc. I know that might sound cliche, but when making this project I definitely created a bit of chaos in my personal life to inspire me. I’ve always tapped into anger to inspire my music but I think I’ve exhausted (and exhausted myself) on that emotion so I’m trying to find other ways to help me create.

Red kinda represents chaos to me. It can be organized chaos, disorganized, battle, fights with a loved one, money issues, etc.

How did you go about commissioning features for the EP?

The features on the project were all friends of mine and those tracks just came organically working in the studio together.

You’ve been working with quite a few rappers lately. Who’s been your favorite to work with so far and why? Are there any collaborations you’re currently eyeing or chasing?

I don’t really have a favorite because there are a lot of qualities that I like about all the rappers I work with and they’re all different.

I’ve already worked with Icecoldbishop, but I really want to get back into the studio with him. I’d also really love to make some stuff with Kemba, but he’s a homie so I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before that happens.

I know in the future I want to perform with more horn players and maybe some string players. Eventually Alexander Lewis Live with Full Orchestra.

What’s an Alexander Lewis live set looking like these days? Will you be touring the EP?

Currently I’m just having fun making as much music as possible. I can’t really say what the live set looks like right now, but I know in the future I want to perform with more horn players and maybe some string players. Eventually Alexander Lewis Live with Full Orchestra.

You’ve joked in the past about fans complaining about you having too much trombone on some songs, while others complain you don’t include it enough on others. Have you found the perfect balance yet?

I just do what feels right now. I’ve stopped analyzing if it’s too little or too much.

Red is part 1 of a color series of projects. So you can expect a lot more music but in different moods/feels that I associate with that specific color.

Your recently tweeted “the project that i’m dropping after Red EP has so many classic jams on it already omggggg,” where are you going after Red?

Red is part 1 of a color series of projects. So you can expect a lot more music but in different moods/feels that I associate with that specific color.

I want to solidify myself as a super producer. There’s a lot more music that I can do outside of hip-hop and trap…

What are your two biggest goals for 2019?

There’s only 6 months left in this year so I think I’ll be pretty stoked if I can get the rest of this music out before the end of the year.

This is more of an ongoing (long term) goal but I want to solidify myself as a super producer. There’s a lot more music that I can do outside of hip-hop and trap and I’m excited to share that with the world.

What makes you happy outside of music?

I really like down time with my family (blood and chosen). As of late that seems to really rejuvenate and inspire me to create.

Alexander Lewis has returned with an incredible new EP entitled OMNI. For over a year, Lewis has been building excitement for the project with the release of singles like ‘March,’ ‘Off Guard,’ ‘Clockwise,’ & ‘Wassup.’ The final product is well worth the wait, a seven song offering that shows Alexander’s range as a producer and artist.

‘Clockwise’ featuring Nick Row kicks things off and provides the perfect snapshot of what to expect. It blends classic hip-hop elements with raw rap and trombone-heavy trap drops. Each element of OMNI is on display with this anthematic cut. ‘Back Then’ sees Lewis connecting with William $ for an in-your-face rap anthem. ‘March’ gives longtime fans the sound that made them fall in love Alexander Lewis; an epic trap offering built off some war-ready brass.

It’s double dose of rap from there with ‘Come Up On My Side’ and ‘Wassup’. The former features up and coming Philly rapper Armani White for a slapper. The later shows of Alexander Lewis A&R skills on display, bringing together MadeinTYO & S’natra and making their drastically different styles feed off of each other exceptionally. S’natra steals the show on this one with a verse that’s assured to have you pressing rewind. Rounding out the project come two tracks primed for the Summer. ‘Off Guard’ features a poppy arc while ‘Pearl Magnolia’ provides a stand-out finale featuring some of Lewis’ most talented friends including Brasstracks, Armani White, & BXRBER. The beat is jazzy hip-hop perfection, BXRBER’s vocals are as stunning and addictive as always and Armani White adds just the right sauce to swag it out.

OMNI. shows that no matter where Alexander Lewis chooses to take his sound, it will be undeniably great. With a stacked list of features and the impeccable production we’ve come to expect, this is one we’ll be bumping all summer long. Stream it below.

For the past few years Alexander Lewis has been setting the music industry on fire. Whether it’s dropping iconic remixes of Mr. Carmack & TroyBoi, creating incredible originals, or collaborating with some of the best in the game: from Brasstracks to KRANE, Juicy J, Yogi and Y2K. While he made a name for himself by crafting grandiose trombone backed trap anthems, Lewis is in the midst of a creative shift. His latest release ‘Wassup’ sees him bringing together MadeinTYO & S’natra for a monster rap track devoid of any big drops. With a big year on the horizon, we caught up with Alexander Lewis to discuss what makes his live sets different, his jazz education, the new musical direction and much more. Check out the full interview below.

How much has your jazz education impacted the way that you make music?

I think it’s shaped the way that I hear music. I can jump into any session and know where I am harmonically in the tune because of years of picking out chords and ear training. I think it only really helps getting down ideas fast while producing (playing keys, melodies etc).

Doing tracks with “drops” doesn’t really excite me anymore.

You’ve said ‘Wassup’ is a pivot track of what to expect in the future. Can you expand on that?

Doing tracks with “drops” doesn’t really excite me anymore. You’ll still hear heavy trombone tracks, but just coupled with vocals. (I may occasionally do a remix or two with a heavy horn drop…who knows haha).

How involved are you when working with vocalists? What does the production process look
like?

For ‘Wassup’ – I just did some A&Ring of sorts. Found two artists who I thought would make a cool contrast and put them together in one track. I let the guys do their thing after that – they recorded their own vocals and sent them over. I arranged the tune after that – piecing together the hooks and adlibs within the track.

For ‘Clockwise’ I was more involved. Engineered the session, mixed the vocals, etc.

You’ve mostly released singles. Are there any plans for a project?

All of these singles are contributing to an EP. I have 3 more tracks and that will conclude this project. And I am already in the stages of curating my second EP as we speak.

For someone who hasn’t seen you live what should they expect from your sets? How are you
mixing your trombone with DJing?

I like to call it more of a performance. When I’m up on stage I’m doing more than just DJing. I’m interacting with the crowd, I’m playing my trombone (loudly in peoples faces so they get the experience). I’m not just behind the table the whole time. I use a wireless mic on my horn so I can run around stage and blend that into performance
tracks.

the stage production cost makes this a little bit unrealistic, especially with everyone’s live setup…but god damn this would be a dream team!

Last year I tweeted that we need to see a tour featuring you, Brasstracks, JNTHN STEIN, S’natra and BXRBER (I also included Lido), to which you promptly responded “Uh fuck yes.” Are you any closer to making that a real possibility?

I think the stage production cost makes this a little bit unrealistic, especially with everyone’s live setup…but god damn this would be a dream team!

You’ve dropped some iconic flips from Mr. Carmack to TroyBoi, Hudson Mohawke to Kanye. What makes you decide to rework a song?

Respect for that artist, and love for the song.

You’ve collaborated with a ton of talented artists. Who’s your favorite person to work with?

Right now I would have to say either Armani White or William $. Two really talented rappers and
good friends of mine.

How important is exercise to your life? Does it impact your creative process or musical output?

Very important. When I have writers block I go for a run or work out. For me, exercising helps clear my head so I can come back and focus solely on creating.

You don’t get better by just hearing high praises all the time.

You recently tweeted about getting rid of yes men. Who do you look to for honest feedback?

I just want honest un-biased feedback. Tell me what you like about it, but don’t leave out the things that I should improve. You don’t get better by just hearing high praises all the time. If the feedback is 100% honest and not malicious in any way, then I can’t get mad. Just improve!

Still searching for those people ;)
