Once Upon A Time in Cyberworld, Black Tiger Sex Machine’s (BTSM) latest and hotly awaited album comes over an impressive year for the Montreal trio, and continues the stories of their legendary, dystopian Cyberpunk universe. This ever-expanding mythical world of their creation is where they have derived not only the inspiration for their largest musical project thus far, but their theatrically stunning live experience.

“Our post-apocalyptic universe is a bleak place where the world is crumbling. In some ways the hardships mirror what we’ve all gone through in the past couple years in real life. With this album we wanted to write from that perspective of coming in and out of hard times while still having some fight and hope left in us.”

In 2021 BTSM headlined a sold out show at Red Rocks, had magical sets at Lost Lands, Bass Canyon, and more. Now they are releasing Once Upon A Time in Cyberworld into our reality, and continuing their mission to push boundaries, collaborate with incredibly talented producers and vocalists, and create music that not only crosses but skips and leaps through genres.

BTSM released quite a few singles from this LP, which fans were happy to see and hear not only at their live sets but online. As a fan myself, going to about a dozen of their shows over the last six years, I can honestly say that going to a BTSM is the way to experience their music since their craft is focused on not just producing sounds, but submerging you into a new world of their creation. This has been part of their artist journey from their early days and has continued to inspire and thrust their career in electronic music forward much to their fans’ delight.

“We really wanted to push everything forward with the LP and tie it together between the next chapter of the Movie Experience, the tour and all of the visual content from artworks, posters and beyond.”

The opener to this album, ‘Trailblazer’ ft. Macntaj, is a definite stunner. Beginning with an aggressive, staccato rap verse, and then melting into a crooning Macntaj, the lyrics emphasize standing strong against adversaries and phonies; it quickly descends into a ferocious flurry of slicing dubstep synths that would make any headbanger break their neck to. Staying close to their theatrical style, BTSM peppers symphony samples over big bass sounds, and pushes the thrills with swelling, brassy horns. It’s a perfect palette cleanser and stages the high energy stage for what is to come within this universe of BTSM.

BTSM’s collaboration with famed duo ATLiens is another stand-out track, and single release, from Once Upon a Time in Cyberworld that will immediately hook into you. With extra crunchy effects, aggressive basslines, and layers of futuristic digital chirps and vocal samples. The melody saunters like a robotic beast and the synths tickle at your already chilled skin- it’s like a horror rollercoaster ride at a future cyberworld carnival. Each verse has its own definitive boundaries but the transitions are so silky that they fit together like a blackjack dealer’s shuffle. One break bleeds into another high-energy rendering, and there are a few morsels that show off ATLiens and BTSM’s shared skill and interest in pushing the boundaries of dark electro. Especially when they pump up the rhythm or deconstruct the disk into its raw components. ‘Front Man’ is a multifaceted track that is sure to hold your attention from beginning to end.

Teaming up with Hairitage and featuring Hyro The Hero, ‘Cheatcode’ brings about some classic BTSM sound. Commencing with quick and plucky synths that set an eerie stage, Hyro’s vocal performance unfurls high energy with lyrics like “I will never fold or crumble/ Six feet deep they want me under/… Imma have to show my muscle”– then there is a fanfare of operatic synths, reaching a higher level of vibrating energy before he continues to spit “I’m in attack mode/I’m in beast mode/I’m in attack mode/ I’m in beast mode/I’m in attack mode/ I’m in beast mode/ Bitch I got the cheatcode,” before everything implodes and the chaotic crescendo crumples onto itself and churns into a wicked head-banger riff. This fury is combined with soft flashes of violin-like backgrounds, creepy, Halloween-esque synths, and emotional trills of classic wind instruments. This is the sound that drew in lots of BTSM fans from their inception.

Partnering up with YOOKiE, BTSM brings back diehard fans to their Church days, sampling choir vocals and stitching them together with YOOKiE’s experimental style of production in ‘Deathstalker.’ This track is like a fever dream, starting out with the clear choir vocals and quickly whipping up into YOOKiE’s foamy, rapid-fire effects that are stripped back, bearing only teeth and attitude. Just as quickly, we are back to the steady beat, the pace of a priest coming down the center aisle, just before another lead-up and drop into the meat of ‘Deathstalker’. Here we have crispy waves of digital sound and the whirr of mechanical synths, chopped up finely into the swell of background choral effects, and a menacing rhythm that spurns you on until the very end of this high octane track.

Other tracks on this album that were especially dank were ‘Leaders’ ft. Alborosie, ‘Karma’ ft Dread MC, and Kai Wachi’s collab ‘Prayers’ ft. Wasiu. Check these and all the other gems they have collected on Once Upon a Time in Cyberworld below.

Black Tiger Sex Machine is known for their dark energy, die-hard fan following (The Church of BTSM), as well as their unrelenting live performances. ‘Killzone’ encapsulates the darkest of the tigers’ indulgences: heavy bass, gnashing synths, and thrilling drops. Sprinkles of pulsating chord progressions shine through the industrial, thrashing energy and theatrical breaks.

‘Killzone’ demonstrates BTSM’s ability to stay close to their sound, while still being able to push their boundaries. They take their fans and listeners on adventures within a post-apocalyptic world they have built, and with each new project and release they go deeper and deeper into a realm of rumbling bass, cybernetic robot imagery, and of course laser beams. I don’t know about you, but I feel quite at home there.

Experimental bass duo ATLiens have been lighting up the festival circuits in recent years and are already on their way to a massive 2020 with their first release of the year, ‘Meltdown’. This time the extraterrestrials team up with fellow sound pushers, Black Tiger Sex Machine, who have also started off the year with a bang with their collaboration with Blanke ‘Time Travel’. This time we get ‘Frequencies’ in which the two groups combine their array of innovative sound designs to give us one to remember.

We begin with a spacey synth looped playing the melody, which is soon joined by a ghostly choir and menacing subs to build tension. Soon after we are introduced to the “Frequency Oscillator” in the first drop which truly launches the listener into orbit. After a quick build-up, we’re thrown back into the frequency oscillator but this time with a bit more emphasis on percussion, giving the track an energizing rhythm. Make sure to check this one out down below!

First off, this track is truly an international mission, with TMRRW representing Brisbane, BTSM hailing from Montreal, and Micah Martin from the US. Secondly, it slaps. ‘Everything’ should not be described as ‘mash-up’ of genres, but a precise breeding of next level, next generation music. Martin’s metal vocals’ power out the anthem like lyrics over a densely woven concoction. In the mix are some alternative rock bass drum and classic high-hat sounds, but still the meaty, dark-electro drops we all know and love from BTSM emerge through out. ‘Everything’ is a hybrid head-banger that will have crowds riled this fall festival season, especially at Lost Lands where BTSM will be performing next for what’s rumored to be an epic set.

Their insanely hard-hitting, electro infused flip of this new-age dubstep classic plays with the sultry vocals of Shallows and interlaces them with a marvelously gritty web of distortion and electro synths before launching you into hyperspace at the drop. The grinding saws and massive subs are soon overtaken with triumphant horns and classic arpeggios at the bridge, and after the chorus, the second drop takes us even deeper into that electro-dub territory that BTSM is known for. Lovely.

BTSM has become one of the must-see EDM acts of the past three years, and this latest remix is a perfect example as to why you should see them whenever you get a chance.
They have been slowly growing their empire over the heavier, shadowier parts of electronic music, building sincere relationships with their fan base (The Church), and consistently delivering unholy bass bangers. After headlining their Ceremony tour and playing EDC Las Vegas in 2018 they set the bar higher by drawing in new parishioners with their unique yet brutal style. Their latest EP, Download the Future, is a continuation of their dystopian aesthetics with fresh and fiery tracks.

The first track is called ‘Hacker’. It starts out with flutters of synths and the tension grows as brass horns and electric guitars get tangled with digital effects. There is so much theatrical exploration that goes on in BTSM’s original creations it is difficult not to be swept up by whatever emotion they create. The drops are the best with their blasts of crunchy bass made to head bang to. As if there was not enough excitement already the tail end of the track morphs into a filthy hard style, techno basher, that has serious jungle house feels. It’s an intense, grimy, and absurdly devilish original song.

The second and title track, ‘Download the Future’, is heavy, dark, and nasty. In the opening is an eerie voice sample and then there is no time wasted before the tempo picks up and bass is in your face. Retro synths guide you through smokey valleys of aggressive snares before the waves of wet, pulsing bass wash over you. There are a few drops that seem sharper with each crest and tumble. In the heat of it all is an epic synthetic guitar solo that swells with the melody. It feels aggressive, relentless, and wicked but I swear you will want more. It is a fiendish delight fans will be foaming at the mouth to see live.

When FIXWITHIT asked BTSM how they felt about this new project they said, “This EP keeps the sci-fi electro vibe from our last album, but it’s all centered around more of a midtempo style. Collabing with Blanke on Hacker was awesome as we love what he’s been putting out recently!”.

With plenty of spine-tingling drops ‘Snakes’ has already ravaged the main stage of Lost Lands, and is sure to rattle your roommates with its churning wubs and dubs.
There is no hesitation before we set foot into the murk of bass, jagged snares, and heavy hitting tempo. These are all the signs of both of these artists classic, hard electro and dubstep influences. It’s easy to relish in the style and depth of mixing that brings out the power and aggression. This track is sure to have you vibing with animalistic dance moves and banging your head to the bass.

‘Snakes’ definitely has fans excited about BTSM’s Part II Ceremony Tour, as it slithers through sections of dark electro vibes, and plunges from each scalding drop.

The illusive Black Tiger Sex Machine’s exclusive interview came about on a night that was quintessentially in BTSM style. It was Friday the 13th on a dim and dark day in Colorado, a state known for its sunshine, at the Aggie Theatre in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Well before they announced their fall 2018 tour, which there are whispers could be announced in the next few weeks, BTSM was busy spreading their dark-electro bass on their Ceremony tour. This past April, as the tour was winding down, they made their way from Texas to Colorado, for the last leg.

Half the state was hunkered down for a powerful prairie snow storm, and authorities had shut down the interstate to protect people from driving into a white out without any warning. Where I was, there was cold rain, and heavy storm clouds hovering over the Rocky Mountains. I had to drive north, parallel to the snowstorm, to Fort Collins. I have been at one of their shows every time they have descended from Montreal to tour the states, and on that dark and chilly ride up north, I got the word that I was going to be able to meet them.

I was seeing members of The Church sermonizing to newcomers, bringing them into the fold, telling tales of Lost Lands, and prophecies of EDC Las Vegas.

I arrived at the Aggie Theatre just as Lektrique went on. As I was waiting in line, I overheard some conversations. People were saying which festivals they had seen BTSM at, and how they had discovered them at that last Fort Collins show in 2016. No longer was I hearing jokes about their name, or playful jabs at what kinds of music to expect. I was seeing members of The Church sermonizing to newcomers, bringing them into the fold, telling tales of Lost Lands, and prophecies of EDC Las Vegas. It made me realize just how big BTSM has become, and it is a direct result of their passion for music and their dedication to their fans through performances, and their interactions with them. As always, after their set, the three of them, Marc Chagnon, Patrick Barry, and Julien Miranda, were greeting fans, signing autographs, and telling jokes while taking pictures.

Here’s what we had to ask them about that Friday the 13th performance, what it took to get there, their inspiration and vision for Kannibalen, and what we can expect from Black Tiger Sex Machine in the near future.

How has your Ceremony tour been different than your other North American tours?

It was probably the tour we felt the most in control on. We spend hours and hours refining our tour production from a programming standpoint to get the full show just right. We also expanded the production with the additional of 7x “light sabers” on each side of stage. It really gave a different depth and vibe to the stage. that was more fitting to our vision than past tours.

What has been your favorite performance during Ceremony?

Every show was incredible. It’s awesome to see the fans in each city and see just how much they like to get down. Salt Lake was truly special though, it was the first time we sold out a show before doors for 2500 people. The crowd was so rowdy. It was a perfect way to end the tour!

Tell us about what it took to make it to your Friday the 13th show in Fort Collins.

A 4 hour night of sleep, 12 hours of driving, 3 rest stops, going against the recommendations of east Colorado locals, 40 miles on a dirt road and a whole lot of faith!

The Facebook group, BTSM Church, is super active and allows each of us to connect first hand with fans on a personal basis

You are great with your fans. How would you describe your relationship with your fan base and The Church?

Magical. We feel very connected to them. The Facebook group, BTSM Church, is super active and allows each of us to connect first hand with fans on a personal basis. It’s great to see fans from all countries and states get together and form this giant family.

It’s amazing how you draw inspiration from films like the Terminator series. What are you all time favorite movies?

Marc: Lord of the Rings, Shawshank Redemption and Fifth Element.

Patrick: 2001: A Space Odyssey, Citizen Kane and Gladiator.

Julien: Blade Runner, El Topo and Once Upon A Time In The West.

On your latest album, New Worlds, you have the track ‘Madness’ which has heavy metal, scream-o-like influences. How do you keep the balance when hybridizing rock and electronic music?

We are huge fans of Sullivan King. He’s a such a hard working and driven dude. We really wanted to do something with him when working on the album. None of us were heavy scream-o or metal fans growing up so the final result was heavily influenced by Sullivan with a good mix of our own style.

We love artists who don’t care about blending genres and are willing to step outside of the dancefloor formula.

You have signed a lot of very talented artists to Kannibalen. What sound are you looking for when searching for artists?

We’re open to anything. We love artists who don’t care about blending genres and are willing to step outside of the dancefloor formula. Each of our artists now have their own overall style that they apply to different genres which has been key for us.

What is your vision for Kannibalen records?

We are electronics fans and we can’t get enough it. We hope our taste in music is reflected in Kannibalen. As of now, a first goal is to continue the growth its had over the years. As a stand alone business, it has really come together well. The music is also getting used more and more in television, movies and advertising. A second goal is further establishing the Kannibalen family of artists that have progressed so much together. We can only wish that we continue to help them sustain great careers and live the artist life.

Did you always want to be in music?

No! Coming out of high school, it would have a been a big surprise to all of us that this would be our job today. Our studies all focused on law & business. Patrick was the most musically inclined when we were young. He practiced violin for over 20 years. However, things changed in our late teen years and early 20s as we started going to more shows. Electronic music became a magnet that attracted us from our more “typical” training and jobs.

We are bringing our own lighting technician to a select few festivals for our own twist on their production.

A lot of people are excited to see you return to the festival stage since you announced your performance at Lost Lands. Are you ready for festival season?

Yes we are. We kicked it off with EDC and it was epic. We are bringing our own lighting technician to a select few festivals for our own twist on their production. You can expect even tighter visuals and lighting effects during our performances!

BTSM seems to like coming to Colorado. Will we ever see you at Red Rocks?

Waiting for the right time. We will one day. We must!

I have never been very superstitious but there is something sumptuous about going to a Black Tiger Sex Machine show on Friday the 13th.

Riding the wave from there latest album release, New Worlds, the trio have been rampaging through North America on their Ceremony tour. Various artists have been joining them for performances here and there, but this Friday the 13th in Fort Collins, Colorado they will be playing alongside label mates Kai Wachi, Sullivan King, and Lektrique.

If you were lucky enough to get tickets before this show was sold out at the Aggie Theater, you’ll your delight darker senses with BTSM’s signature heavy, hardcore electro style and post apocalyptic aesthetics. Putting on a truly unique set, Black Tiger’s performances are immersive and in your face, but also evolving. With every tour they attempt to make their sets darker, deeper with themes of monstrous futurisms and flourishing anarchy- testing the bottom of bass music, wading through murky waves of electronic music’s danker roots. It is this focus on delivery at every level- from their interactions with fans, to the collaborating and signing artists to their Kannibalen record label, and the way they create new music that captures their commitment to staying the saviors of dark electro.

BTSM has released three singles so far from the epic LP. ‘Zombie‘ ft. Panther, ‘Madness,’ a collaboration with Sullivan King, and ‘Lyons‘, another collab with DJ duo YOOKiE. Each single has been a snapshot of BTSM’s venture into the sounds of a post-apocalyptic chaos realm. Through the eyes of electronic music’s darkest of production teams, listeners are provided a glimpse of what a crumbled world would be composed of- ‘War’, ‘Rebels’, ‘Replicants’, and ‘Death’ are all track titles that paint a picture of an inevitable, grim future, on the edge of reality, gnashing at the last flames of society.

Impressively, the trio manages to take their sound to a higher state, while maintaining their dark nature. Tracks such as ‘Broken Machines’ still have that punching, high-energy rhythmics that is still dance music, but the horns echo like they were bounding off the sides of abandoned sky scrapers, and the bass booms, but also breathes a little too like a life form.

‘Replicants’ is another stand out track that label mate Apashe collaborated on. This tract is an aphotic thrill ride. Using effects that are reminiscent of a distant hover craft, a robotic voice sample warning of non-humans, and a blaring alarm-horn, the build up to the track is so theatrical, it should have been part of the Blade Runner soundtrack. The sound and style in this song is true Black Tiger Sex Machine with its cascading effects, icy, automated sounds, and overall unrelenting bass-viciousness.

‘Madness’ is a mash up, between alternative rock elements, and drum and bass elements, this rock-trap track steam rolls its way through waves of trippy guitar riffs, and high energy dance electro rhythms. ‘Madness’ is a frenzied banger, with rabid, scream-o style vocals, and unhinged from any trappings of classification.

BTSM never shies away from intensity and ‘War’ shows listeners how it is done. Allowing for complex textures in sound choice, along with some classy hip-hop rhythms, and striking string-synth progressions, but for the hardcore electronic blooms, breaking the surface of tight snares. Breaks in the bass lines bring blossoms of twinkling synths, and nothing is rushed to the next drop, but is woven, fastidiously.

BTSM and Lektrique finish off the LP with ‘Death’- a superb blend of BTSM church infusion choral vocal samples, tight tempo, and sinuous shifts between industrial thrashings, and nebulous bass. A break in the voltaic darkness, a shredding electric guitar solo pays homage to the heavy metal influences that prevade BTSM’s aesthetic, and culture.

Black Tiger Sex Machine has been up front with the ideas behind this album, which were based on capturing their attitudes and perspective on both creating and listening to music. Inspired by the tumultuousness of the times we live in, on the precipice of an old way of things, an electronically automated future, and the shifting political ground many of us stand on, New Worlds encapsulates many of the stark contrasts in our current reality. A fragile state of depressed populations hoping for a better, blossoming future. At least the raves will be good, from the sounds of it.
