The answer is Malignant Vol. 1. One might think this is an exaggeration, but a quick look through the tracklist reveals the true catastrophic nature of this compilation. From the label-head himself releasing the guttural ‘Laryngitis’ and the ridiculous ‘Blunder 2.0,’ to Aweminus and Subfiltronik finally delivering their highly-awaited ‘Subminus,’ veterans are well-represented in Malignant Vol. 1. The introduction seems heavily influenced by Dion Timmer, as ethereal synths and the processing of Celestic’s vocals are taken right from his repertoire. Long but not drawn out, the opening sets the stage for the insanity (no pun intended) that follows, as Calcium’s influence comes to light around the seventy-five-second mark. A crisp build up brings about the chaos that both producers are known to deliver, with maniacal gunshots and rattling basses driving ‘Insane’ forward. In the second half of the track, the essence of the introduction returns before additional madness is unleashed.

First teased in Calcium’s Teeth N’ Bones Vol. 3 mix, the two promised to drop the collaboration if each of their respective tweets reached 500 retweets earlier this week. Bass fans around the world jumped at the opportunity of hearing the collaboration as the tweets quickly reached their targets, leading us to the impending ‘Doom’, out today on Never Say Die.

Straight off the bat, Calcium’s signature synths and percussion are heard, quickly building up to a climax of a barrage of gunshot-like stabs. The ear-shattering frequencies and monstrous sound design flex only continue to grow stronger as the track progresses, as Calcium and Hekler’s strengths are complimented in the drops. Showcasing their rapid evolution as sound maestros, the pair of producers play with tempo and timing in the second half, sure to leave dubstep fans awe-struck and fully satisfied.

Further pursuing his bass odyssey, Calcium returns to Never Say Die: Black Label with the Skull Vault EP, following up on his massive single ‘Mega Punch’ released earlier this year on the imprint. With a sound that becomes more recognizable with every release, the calcareous heavy-hitter pushes dubstep to new barriers in Skull Vault, laying a strong foundation of quality releases that he is sure to build upon in the future.

Kicking things off in full force, ‘Crusher’ is a colossal embodiment of Calcium’s unique yet monstrous sound. Eerie effects and a sinister melody induce goosebumps from the beginning before the true madness is unleashed. The producer’s distinct chainsaw-esque synths and gnarly stab layering shine at the forefront of the drops, without forgetting his usual skull-shattering percussion.

Wielding production diversity with ease, a whirling digital melody beckons forebodingly as an ethereal riser pierces the air, wavering delicately and setting an ominous stage for ‘Comply’. A grainy, throbbing vocal sample lingers momentarily before erupting into a chaotic surge of pulverizing bass and wonky synth jabs.

A playful, undulating accordion presents a warm embrace as pulses of bass thunder in the backdrop of ‘Turn It Up’. The tempo of the track expedites rampantly as frenzied drumroll launches crisply into calamitous heaves of pressurized bass and expertly placed beat breaks.

Capping things the project off as hard as he kicked it off, Calcium makes a statement with the fourth and final track of Skull Vault. Perhaps his wonkiest track to date, ‘Break This Down’ sways heavily toward the melodic side, before Calcium flexes new sounds and synths in the drops, while also playing with drum timing to give the project a fresh conclusion.
