“It’s dangerous to go alone! Take this.” says the old man in the cave, handing the player a sword to aid in the hours of exploration that they can expect to follow from one of the most legendary franchises of all time, The Legend of Zelda. DMVU and Toadface pay homage to the phrase with their new EP, lovingly titled It’s Dangerous to Go Alone, released via Dome of Doom. Much in the same way that the Zelda franchise tantalizes players with exploration, discovery, and treasure, this EP truly evokes a feeling of not knowing what’s around the next corner. The next dungeon is an unknown realm, the presence of either treasure or danger being equally likely. Likewise, every track is unique. Every sample is distinct. Every little bit of sound design is a treasure unto itself, just waiting to be heard.

DMVU and Toadface can both claim “experimental sound design” as a forte on their résumé. It’s Dangerous to Go Alone is like a charcuterie board of instruments and samples, ranging from deep sub-bass thuds to treble-centric MIDI notes from video game soundtracks. At no time does the cacophony sound dissonant. Each sound is pinpointed, artfully placed in a complicated juxtaposition that makes every note shine through like it’s surfing a wave toward a beach full of unsuspecting listeners.

From the police siren in the intro to ‘Uncut Diamonds’ to the Deep, Dark, and Dangerous-like sub-bass of ‘Fabled,’ It’s Dangerous to Go Alone manages to make the listener feel like they’re in a constant state of danger. Lives may not be lost here, but your wits are a different story. The skull-wracking instrumentation in ‘Jungle Dub’ and ‘Morning Star” hits like waking up on the wrong side of the bed in the morning before being comforted with the first cup of coffee for the day. Not a beat is wasted, not a frequency left unturned. If speakers could talk, they’d be left aghast at the range they’re expected to put out for this EP. The arpeggiated synths of ‘Uncut Diamonds’ and ‘Jungle Dub’ aren’t all that far off from the Super Nintendo-era reward sounds of opening a treasure chest. RPG-lovers will find themselves in the familiar state of wondering, “What’s that? Oh, it’s treasure!” every time the measure switches up.

DMVU and Toadface command the utmost respect for their ability to do something different but consistent with their music time and time again. It’s Dangerous to Go Alone is by no means a deviation from what listeners have come to expect from either artist, but all the same, it will hit the ears like something listeners have never heard before. This is treasure chest gold. This is no game, this is art. Do yourself a favor now and listen to It’s Dangerous to Alone below.

DMVU has impacted the scene with spine-tingling sound design and storytelling for years now. Gaining major traction from his audience and colleagues throughout the underground. His crisp and flow-filled rhythms truly separate him from the rest of the competition out there, always diving into a brand new realm of frequencies with each release. And to build even more hype around his upcoming EP, Tools For Those Who’ve Lost Their Way, it’s our pleasure to help premiere his next single, ‘Compass.’ An unexpected and gorgeous turn of events in the forms of comforting melodies. An OG Trap sound and a nostalgic arrangement. The song completely opens listeners’ eyes from its suave wave of emotion and intoxicating aura surrounding the piece itself.

‘Compass’ was the track that Started this EP. I wrote it entitled it with the thought of songs kind of being like tools, and then thought to myself “ Well people don’t just have a single tool, you have a whole box of them.” And that point it seemed kind of obvious that I needed to make this a whole project. I was also really happy with the kind of dissonant and pretty melody that track had. Which led to me incorporating that same key to other tracks on the project.DMVU

Recently releasing ‘Lantern Bearer’ off the EP, fans were ecstatic and wanted another peek into his newest group of gems. And ‘Compass’ will fulfill that curiosity and mystery right away. Known for his heavy-hitting bass tunes, this specific single takes his style to a whole new level. Changing up the flow in an everlasting form of sound due to its slower-paced adventure and taking over your minds one by one, ‘Compass’ transports you back in time and injects the same nostalgic feel when listening to this style of art for the first time. Every element within works in harmony with one another. It’s songs like this that really make the artist so versatile. We’re stoked to hear what comes next for this musician, but for now, make sure to go support by streaming ‘Compass’ via Dome Of Doom!

The introduction ‘Erythraeum’ welcomes listeners to a dystopian world in the not-so-distant future. The earth is no longer green and the machines have won. The smooth opening of ‘Harmonicc’ leads you astray before getting obliterated with bass in the first drop. From there on out the intensity seldom relents. The Chain is a blistering ride through insane sound design, filth, and unbridled creativity. Melodic elements peak through at times, but this one is meant for the bass heads.

Taking a marked divergence from his more bass-heavy, teeth-grinding productions of the past, just over a month ago he released Praise Be the Ripple Or, The Ripple, a lush, downtempo thoroughfare of immense proportions. Now, he’s “back on the block” once more, being the 149th installment of our guest mix and interview series. We took a deep dive into his project up to this point, his latest album, and what’s on the table for the future, along with the guest mix being entirely original and mostly unreleased. Grab some headphones or a fine sound system, relax, and press play.

In another interview you mentioned that you were initially blown away that music could be made entirely through the use of a computer. How did you grow from a creative, energetic noobie into the master craftsman that you’ve become today? What have been the most important turning points in your life and career?

There have definitely been a handful. Taking the piano seriously was a big one. Also being on tour was a big one because it really changed the way I produced music. I was writing mostly for a live setting at that point, while now being stuck at home the last thing I’m thinking about when writing is live music.

…I’m trying to convey other than it’s OK to feel things. And I honestly think I’m trying to convey that more to myself and to others…

Your latest album Praise Be Delusion or, The Ripple is a lush, downtempo emotional thoroughfare of immense proportions. What’s the significance behind the name, and what were you trying to convey to your audience through the hour-long journey?

I don’t know if there’s something in particular that I’m trying to convey other than it’s OK to feel things. And I honestly think I’m trying to convey that more to myself and to others ha ha ha. There was a lot of emotion and those songs and if people can relate to that then I think I’ve done my job.

You recently tweeted that you played piano on every single track on the album, and that it has more live instrumentation than any other project you’ve released. Have you always played the piano? And what made you decide to make live instruments such a large component of this particular body of work?

There’s been a piano in my house as long as I can remember. I played drums as my first instrument and took that very seriously, but when there’s a piano around you just kind of tend to eventually take a stab at it. I played it a decent amount more than usual over the past few years but since quarantine started I’ve heard all the time to practice and it has been super helpful for me and my music.

You first joined Dome of Doom last year with the release of your immaculate Two Pairs of Eyes, Gazing Only at Each Other. How did you originally get connected with them, and what made you want to release your latest body of work with them as well?

If I remember correctly Ahee, a mutual friend of our hooked me up with Wylie. I was trying to find a way to sell a sample pack I had made on supplies and Chris told me this was the guy. After talking for a bit I realized that I had really been enjoying his label’s releases for a long time. Eventually, I sent him some music that pretty much everyone else turned down, which turned into two pairs of eyes.

It really feels like the old days. I’m actually very grateful for it.

With live performances being put on hold for the entire past year, life has made producers take a step back and remember what’s important to them and why they do what they do. What are some things that you hold especially dear?

Not being on tour has definitely given me time to write music like I used to when I just dropped out of high school. Pretty much sat in front of the computer day and night trying new things and making sounds and playing piano. It really feels like the old days. I’m actually very grateful for it.

Some people find peace through their work, through meditation, or through quality time with their friends. Where do you find your peace?

I really find it through just sitting down and working on music with zero expectations. Not trying to write music for shows or write a song for an album or make a mix. Literally just sitting down and playing the piano and maybe something cool will come from the melody and I can get a song out of it. If not it doesn’t matter because it’s art for art’s sake.

You’re stuck on a deserted island for the rest of your life and can only bring along 3 albums to hold you over for the rest of your time there. What 3 albums do you choose and why?

Oh easy. Instrumentals Volume one by Clams Casino. The original Blade Runner soundtrack. And Selected Ambient Works by Aphex twin. All of those records have something different to offer while all being pretty chill in their own way. Clams Casino is hands-down my favorite producer in the entire world. Also love the Blade Runner soundtrack, really cool kind of early electronica stuff. And Selected Ambient Works would just be there to help me keep my sanity.

Nowadays I try to worry much less about what other people are doing but I’m only human so that only goes so far.

It seems that Denver is an exceptional hot-bed for exceedingly talented bass music producers. What’s it like living there, and do you find all that company intimidating or motivating?

Growing up here it was definitely extremely intimidating. I think it’s actually one of the things that motivated me to try so hard. There was a lot I had to keep up with and it was constantly evolving, so I found myself trying to do the same. Nowadays I try to worry much less about what other people are doing but I’m only human so that only goes so far. I find it really inspiring to live in an area with so many talented artists. Whether they are producers or DJs or painters or film makers. We have it all here.

When you’re in a creative rut, what aids you in taking a mental step back and resetting before diving back into your workflow?

I really like movies and reading. Soundtracks can get me really inspired to try new things. I also live right on some wilderness with a river and I think that in itself is pretty inspiring.

As long as I am happy and can pay the rent I think that really is the pinnacle of success.

What does success look like to you? And, what are some things you do daily in order to achieve it?

To me success just looks like being able to cover my bills and maybe have a little bit left over for weed, by doing what I love. As long as I am happy and can pay the rent I think that really is the pinnacle of success. Being able to pay the bills so you have time on your hands to work on your craft is really the dream isn’t it?

In recent years especially, the question of artistic freedom and following trends have been brought up frequently. What’s your personal take on those issues?

I’m firm that censorship is the end of art. There has been things in art that I don’t agree with but my trick is to just not listen to it. When people try to strip away the ability to truly express via art, it’s pretty much an instant death sentence. There’s a lot of things in this world that a lot of us don’t agree with but taking it on they trying to suppress creativity is the complete wrong way to go about it.

You pretty heavily teased a new merch line to go along with the new album. Can you give us any idea of when fans might be getting some information on that?

Oh yeah, I’m super excited about this one. I can’t reveal too much but I listened to what people said they wanted and just kind of went with that. Without giving away too much I can confirm that with you got leggings and joggers on the way. I had my friend Sean design them and they match the aesthetic of both my last albums super well. He’s a very talented designer.

What’s next on the horizon for you?

More than I can handle ha ha ha. But actually lots of good stuff. We have been discussing getting two pairs of eyes pressed this year. Also have a handful of EPs in the works. Some not-so-chill ones also. And also spending every day praying that someday I’ll get to play a normal show hahaha.

You prepared quite the vibe-driven guest mix for us today! Can you tell us how you settled on that distinct aesthetic and energy, and what you wanted to showcase with it?

I was kind of shooting to showcase some tracks that didn’t quite make the cut on the album, what songs I still really enjoy and had a great time making.

Tracklist: (*signifies unreleased)

Colorado based artist, DMVU has just unleashed a whole new type of monster. His brand new EP Chemicals is out now on Wakaan. The label is well known for pushing forward-thinking bass music and DMVU has made quite a name for himself over the years within the bass scene. Gaining a huge recognition from his single ‘Bloccd,’ he never stopped and continued to bring in high quality and heavy content. From releasing on labels such as Circus Records, Deadbeats, Quality Goods Records and now Wakaan, there’s no doubt that he’s put in hard work for his audience and more. He’s even collaborated with some of the most unique electronic artists such as TVBOO, sfam, Yheti and more.

He’s well known for his unique sound design, arrangements and drums. Each one of his tracks always has something fresh and new. Chemicals is a perfect compliment to his audience and his love for music in general. So if you love nasty and fresh bass music, then this is the art piece for you.

The EP features a lot of out of the box thinking. From the first song to the last, it’s an experience like no other. There’s surprises lurking in every corner of the spectrum. And just when you thought each track is over, he immediately knows how to bring the listener back in for more. Every piece has a unique characteristic and personality to it which compliments his style that much more.

Overall, this is a beautiful EP with tons of ear candy that will satisfy the listener’s craving for many years to come. Wherever you are at your next show or festival in the future, there’s no doubt that you’ll be hearing tracks from this EP. We’re excited to see and hear what’s next for this legend. For now, go and support DMVU by streaming his Chemicals EP everywhere.

Best known for the crisp clean vocal cuts and absorptive basslines produced under the moniker DMVU, Denver-native Matthew Jones firmly divulges the breadth of his creative arsenal and depth of his sonic narration with the release of his upcoming full-length album Two Pairs of Eyes, Gazing Only at Each Other. While the name DMVU has grown synonymous with cavernous bass and a compelling dark aura, this project strays clear of the dark symmetry, establishing a riveting emotional presence tethered within atmospheric melodies, luscious harmonies, and an exceptional textural diversity composed over the course of a number of years.

‘Dawn’ opens much like the procession of first light in the morning, with an embryonic sense of anticipation that gradually accelerates as the track progresses. Precipitous piano chords protracted gently over soft, capricious vocal tones join concertedly with evocative snares as the energy of the track nears a crescendo. An extravagantly crafted refrain offers a moment of solace for the dual-pronged piano and vocal harmony to ring out intemperately before a cascade of synths imbues a state of supreme audible bliss.

The full-length release of DMVU’s forthcoming album Two Pairs of Eyes, Gazing Only at Each Other eloquently delineates a necessity for depth and variety within music. Be sure to check out ‘Dawn’, out now below, in anticipation of the full album & cassette tape release via Dome of Doom on April 17th.

As two of the most forward-thinking dominators of dangerous bass lines, TVBOO and DMVU have carved out a cozy niche in the exponentially-growing experimental side of new-age electronic music. TVBOO has curated a consistent high-energy aesthetic with his productions and stand-up so grimy, you can only help but to laugh at the ludicracy of it all. DMVU has been leading the charge for years now with progressive pieces that sit firmly unconfined by traditional genre borders, with a major emphasis on a genuinely fun atmosphere and the promotion of true self-expression. Now, they’ve teamed up to collectively deal some sonic intoxicants straight to your dome in the form of ‘Eat My Sass,’ out on Wakaan, a deep dive into just how wild these two can get.

If wobbles and grit are the items on the menu for your ears, ‘Eat My Sass’ will surely fill you up to your heart’s content. Instead of simply not fitting into a box, TVBOO and DMVU have completely flipped it on its head, or thrown out the box in its entirety, creating their own hybrid heavy heater that hellaciously handles all your musical desires. From the introduction you’ll be whiskey away by the playful tone and the accompanying electricity that courses through your body, debauchery and shenanigans being the only sure course of action. The first drop hits hard, sounding like maniacally angry pots and pans letting you know their displeasure, before the switch up hits and the wobbles contort your face like you just caught a whiff of something gnarly. The second drop is much more TVBOO-centric at the beginning, with his patented sounds being immediately apparent, before DMVU comes back in for the kill shot.

‘Eat My Sass’ will keep you on your toes throughout the entirety of the piece, but that’s nothing new for these immensely talented artists who have constantly pushed boundaries throughout their careers. With plenty of studio time now, both these artists have a chance to make some of the best music of their lives, but for now check out ‘Eat My Sass’ for yourself below, and grab the free download here!
