There’s no doubt that Partica is a collective that snatched our hearts ever since they came onto the scene. When everyone said that trap was outdated, the supergroup and record label pushed on, giving a platform to some of the best producers in the underground bass scene. For Halloween, they did something super special and brought together 23 incredible artists for a mega collab called ‘FRANKENSTEIN’ and everyone in the scene should give it a listen.

I imagine it’s super difficult to bring TWENTY-THREE artists together to finish a track. They got Dabow, capshun, So Sus, and episcool, to name a few. Even label heads Gurf and Runnit make an appearance. Just run through the list yourself and see the undeniable talent. Dabow himself shares on Twitter, “partica got us all together to create the biggest collab I’ve been part of. and it bangs super hard. friday.” Partica really did that. And the, “it’s Patricia,” vocal sample towards the end was really playful and fun.

Onto my personal critique—and let’s preface this by me admitting that collaborations rarely do it for me, but I tried to keep my own bias aside and listen to ‘FRANKENSTEIN’ for what it is—and it’s a good track. However, while there are some great trap builds, for a song marketed as ‘trap 2’, its drops and most memorable moments are on the dubstep and experimental bass realm. The song that has some of the best trap producers right now, so that part was a bit disappointing for me. Additionally, for a Halloween track, the spooky factor could have been turned up a notch. The intro was haunting, but once it hit the 30-second mark, I forgot it was a Halloween track until the “Frankenstein” sample came in.

I also get that the real Frankenstein is having so many different producers bring a different part in to create a mammoth of a track, though. And overall, it’s cohesive and a great tune. The artwork is also flames. So listen to the Partica mega collab ‘FRANKENSTEIN’ for yourselves below and let us know your thoughts!

Hairitage has been making waves in the bass scene as of late due to his unmatched versatility through the various facades of the enveloping genre. From the heavy Bad Fellas EP on Downlink’s Uplink Audio to the more recent ‘The Movement’ that is infiltrating trap sets and mixes across the world, the Oregon-based producer has been riding a tidal wave of momentum and is showing no signs of slowing down soon. Today, Hairitage joins the esteemed Never Say Die with the Triumph EP, looking to further solidify his rapid rise to the top.

Keeping up with the theme of versatility, Hairitage unleashes four tracks that all stand well on their own. The project’s title track features an alluring introduction before a quick switch to dubstep madness is sure to send any listener into a headbanging frenzy. ’40 Cal’ alongside Rico Act follows, where the producer uses the ever-present vocalist as a bridge into pure insanity highlighted by thumping, menacing bass, upping the intensity from the first track. The latter half of the Triumph EP is a welcome change from the opening, as a wonky, freeform approach with a hint of trap is present in ‘Illegal Parties’ and ‘Diamond Chain,’ and listeners are highly recommended to stick around until the very end for a gnarly surprise.

We were blessed with the opportunity to catch up with Hairitage to discuss everything from his early production days, to signing an EP on Never Say Die, to the secrets to his glorious beard. Don’t miss the Triumph EP and accompanying interview below!

Your history on SoundCloud dates back to late 2016 but we have a feeling you’ve been making music for longer. Do you have any formal music training?

I started around 12/13 playing bass guitar, and I had an incredible instructor who took me through the basics and got me started. I’m 27 now so I’ve had quite a lot of time to figure things out.

When did you start producing? What got you into bass music and who were your early inspirations?

I started producing around 2011-2012. I was a metalhead up until someone showed me Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites, then all of my time went to figuring out how to make this stuff. I found Zomboy, Feed Me, Flux Pavilion, Doctor P, and many more. So many insane musical ideas I’d never been shown before! It wasn’t long before I was googling “how to Skrillex” and going down the rabbit hole of production.

It seems as though you’ve only been making (or at least releasing) heavier bass music for about a year. What prompted the change to more aggressive music?

I’ve been making heavier music the whole time, just none of it ever reached the spotlight until recently. I had a much easier time making other genres to a level I was happy with, but if you dig deep enough I’m sure you can find some good old garbage from 5+ years ago!

Does your approach to making a dubstep track differ from making a trap or future bass track? Do you have a set process when songwriting or is every case different?

Dubstep is a LOT more sound design intensive and calls for a lot more processing and pushing a track to its limit. It takes me a lot longer to get something I’m happy with that fits with the status quo because the process is a little counter-intuitive.

With every song I write, I’m starting with drums, creating a hook, filling in percussion/FX elements to create energy, and repeat.

Stand out, but fit in.

Congratulations on your first Never Say Die project! How long has the Triumph EP been in the works? How did the signing to the esteemed label come about?

Thank you! The Triumph EP has really been worked on over the past 6 months for 3 of the songs. ’40 Cal’ with Rico Act has gone through probably a couple of years of refining to figure it out. I think I wrote an entire song around his vocals 3 or 4 times before I ended up with something we were both happy with.

The label interest started randomly on Twitter! I had been sending out my demos, ‘Beef With Me’ and ‘The Movement’ were getting a ton of support, and SKisM actually reached out to me online to see what else I was working on, and expressed interest in an EP. I spent a lot of time over the next few months putting together the many projects I had going to create an EP that I thought would be a good fit; stand out, but fit in.

A true showcase of your various styles and sounds, the Triumph EP is one of the most diverse projects released on Never Say Die in a long time. Did you purposely select these four tracks to tell a different story with each?

I absolutely did! I can’t sit through a full DJ set or album that doesn’t give me some variety, and I certainly can’t sit and write the same genre over and over. The Triumph EP is truly an example of the kind of musical experience I want to have, and I’m so glad I can provide that to my listeners.

Write on shit, master on gold.

2020 is already looking stacked for you in terms of shows. Does touring impact your productivity? What are your favourite and least favourite parts about being on the road?

Travelling definitely takes its toll on production. It’s very hard to get a level of quality out of just headphones and a laptop (or in my case a Microsoft surface pro..) but when you start getting used to your equipment they really don’t become as much of a problem. Just do the fun creative work on the road, and then make time to mix/master at home on all your fancy gear. That’s how a lot of professionals recommend production anyway. Write on shit, master on gold.

We know the Triumph EP must be a massive check off the bucket list, but anything else you’d like to accomplish or are working toward in 2020?

It is! This year, I’ve landed a festival out of the country, Ilesoniq in Montreal, which was another huge milestone!

Right now I’m focused on getting more and more projects complete, I’ve got some INCREDIBLE collaborations coming with some other rising artists, and established ones. The rest of the year is going to be building my brand, releasing more and more work and hopefully by 2021 we are just too busy to function with shows and festivals!

Also, I’m on the fresh meat list for Lost Lands this year, so fingers crossed!!

Do you take pride in having one of the best beards in the game? What’s your beard routine?

This is the main thing I’m proud of in life. The routine is beard oil, beard cream, beard hold. Every day. This shit gets expensive! Especially when you leave $100 of product at the hotel…

This month we’ve got some bouncy future trap, Italian drum and bass, and a few exceptional bass producers. Look out for all of the artists below making waves in 2020.

Angelic Root

Angelic Root’s recently untethered M O T I O N EP via Deep, Dark, & Dangerous is a brilliant depiction of the persistent care and effort that the talented Michigan-native has exhausted to meticulously refine his production craft over the course of the past 3 years. Equipped with an expansive personal discography as well as releases via Mean Mug Music, Push Waves, and Aspire Higher, Angelic Root possesses a unique taste for grungy basslines, which coupled with his propensity for innovative sound design, allow for a comprehensive style in each release that can vary from dismal swamps to ominous, spatial soundscapes. Perched atop the excitement surrounding his latest Deep, Dark, & Dangerous debut and the duly-anticipated release of his eclectic treatment to DMVU’s ‘Bloccd,’ Angelic Root is poised for an impressive start to the next decade.

cvrbi

Having collaborated with FUXWITHIT favourite sebjin and Focus Five alumni ledim, it was only a matter of time before cvrbi commanded a spot of his own in Focus Five. Packing the future beat / future trap sound we’ve been championing practically every month, cvrbi consistently brings the bounce, knock and slaps that FUXWITHIT fans crave. Hailing from Romania, the gifted beat maker first made waves with ‘takemetothetop,’ a certified banger that is ever evolving. Not convinced yet? ‘Sting’ will sell you without a doubt. Linking with AP11, the two craft a masterclass in bounce. Dizzying vocal chops, groovy pads and precise percussion make it a smash that’s assured to get you moving. Oh and it’s not just the recent releases, ‘gravity’ and ‘apollo’ pack a similar level of pristine production.

Hairitage

If you’ve been to a heavy bass show or festival this year, you’ve heard Hairitage’s songs whether you realized it or not. Aaron LeClair, the mastermind behind Hairitage, has been concocting diverse banger after banger, triumphing over a variety of genres and energies, showcasing a talent surely worthy of highlighting. ‘The Movement’ has one of the smoothest trap vibes of any song this year, already garnering support from the likes of Bassnectar, Skrillex, DJ Snake, Moody Good, and more. His collaboration with the ATLiens, ‘Exterminate’, is next level heavy, creating this immensely ear-pleasing and delightfully filthy mix of trap and dubstep. If he has more heat like this up his sleeve, 2020 very well might be a major breakout year for this quickly emerging artist.

Result

Despite being around for a few years, Result only landed on our radar recently through the epic, mind-melting Manticore EP. After a single listen, we were convinced that the Croatian producer is bound to be the future of bass music. Displaying a keen versatility through dubstep, drum & bass, halftime and more, Result lures you in with unparalleled energy before keeping you captivated with impeccable sound design. Dubstep heaters such as ‘Steel Face’ and the more recent freebie ‘Too Large’ will surely break your neck while the rest of his discography impresses with its innate intricacies and meticulous nature.
SD

What a better way to welcome this 2020 than with some Italian D&B vibes? “O my god, another Italian?” you might wonder. Oh yes. I’m not ashamed to admit that I have a special consideration for my countrymen. We are not lucky enough to have a cohesive and supportive scene behind us, so the least we can do is to lay ourselves the very foundations to build one. Msft and Kumo Collective may be the locomotives in our scene right now, but there’s much to be discovered below the surface. SD (So Deep) is the perfect example! With releases on iconc UK labels like Dispatch and Commercial Suicide, SD represents the very healthy Italian Drum&Bass underworld. His recent debut EP on Dispatch is a perfect snapshot that testify to his mastery on plenty of D&B genres. From liquid funk anthems to gritty stompers, SD takes you on a roller-coaster ride with The Funk The Blues Et Cetera. If you’re instead used to FUXWITHIT’s experimental treats and this is too soft for you, then jump directly into ‘Epinephrine,’ released earlier this month on Italian label Delta9 and supported directly from Skankdabass.

Parametric Records based out of Los Angeles has released their blazing freshman compilation album Pressure Points Vol. 1, a body of work practically overflowing with diversity and individuality. Packed to the brim with illustrious names throughout the bass music ecosystem like Duke & Jones, Tvboo, Ruvlo, Hairitage, RemK, Juelz and more, this is an eleven-track collection that is surely not to be trifled with.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/701406400″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Kicking off at the fourth spot in the compilation is Duke & Jones with ‘Waist Down,’ a song that will make you jive from your tops of your hips to the tips of your toes. This is a deliciously trappy auditory layer cake that only gets better as it progresses. The first drop acclimates you to the pristine sound design and amazing flow, making it exceedingly difficult not to move on the spot. The latter drop is much thicker than the first, maintaining the energy while allowing for more full-bodied undulations. If you’re looking for a song to get a party popping real quick, throw this puppy on and watch the room go wild.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/701403223″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Next, EDM funny guy and experimental dubstep producer, Tvboo, and swiftly rising production wizard Ruvlo, have dastardly devised a musical tool of mass destruction. ‘Break It Down’ does just that, obliterating everything in its path. With three separate unforgiving drops with maximum malicious intent, this track is a first-class headbanging marathon. The first drop melds both styles seamlessly, beginning with thick trap-heavy basslines that quickly devolve into Tvboo’s signature “make your mind feel like it’s in a blender” type sound, ping-ponging back and forth. This song feels like a true collaboration, with neither party dominating the overall sound, an immaculate harmony.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/698024485″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Aaron LeClair also known as Hairitage comes in at the eighth spot in the collection with his piece ‘The Movement,’ a red bull for your nervous system. The pre-drop vocals of “down with this movement” get you primed and ready before you get smacked with a delightfully filthy trap beat. To call this song funky would be a grave understatement. A push for individuality and creativity is evident, with fun and weirdness in maximum demand.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/698382730″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”300″ iframe=”true” /]

RemK and his track ‘Flip It’ are my final highlight of Pressure Points, another immensely talented artist currently navigating the realms of heavy trap heaters. Putting the hybrid back in hybrid trap, he alternates between cascades of thick basslines and more traditional trap stylings, keeping your ears guessing. What they don’t have to guess, however, is whether or not each song he puts out slaps, because it’s always a yes.

Parametric Records hit a major homerun with Pressure Points Vol. 1, giving progressive bass artists a body of work to showcase their inordinate amounts of talent. Giving this entire collection a thorough rinse will assuredly leave each and every listener eagerly awaiting Vol. 2, a sure sign of big things to come. For now, make sure to check out all of Pressure Points Vol. 1 for yourself below!

Nostalgic vocal subtleties abound the expedition, weaving brief hints of familiarity within the desolate experimental soundscapes of ‘Shelter’ and ‘Tantra’ as muffled barrages of bass and low-frequency subs throng your peripheral senses.

The odyssey delves further into the radical abyss with ‘Fuck That,’ reaching a juncture of atmospheric turbulence and off-kilter wobbles that protracts into a full-fledged audible incursion as ‘Exterminate’ with Hairitage disperses a lethal culmination of energy to the project, before ‘Closer’ delivers a final vibrant salutation to the distant foreign domain.
