Beyond releasing incredible music, JEANIE has taken her impact a step further with the creation of her collective built for women in electronic music, GRL GANG. If you’re not already familiar with the names on the roster, get familiar. GRL GANG has become the home for some of the most exciting rising talents in bass music, period. With a collection of guest mixes and two complications under her belt, it’s more clear than ever that GRL GANG is forced to be reckoned with and is here to stay. With all this being said, it feels like the perfect time for the young legend to join one of electronic music’s newest flagship labels, Space Yacht, with her new single ‘Psychosis’. 

Right out the gate, we’re met by the sinister and aggressive atmosphere created in the intro before being introduced to this hypnotic distorted guitar rift. This rift caries the record forward, as more and more percussive elements are added until we’re finally thrown into the belly of the beast. That is, of course, a barrage of heavily distorted leads that are presented to us in a machine-gun-like way.  Thankfully, we got the chance to sit down with JEANIE to pick her brain on this masterpiece of a track and see what the future holds! Listen and read our mini-interview below.

First off, Happy Women’s History Month! Thank you so much for stopping by and allowing us to host this awesome moment. Give us a little insight into the evolution of the ‘PSYCHOSIS.’

What the song means to me: I made ‘Psychosis’ one night after having writer’s block for a while and it’s definitely the result of a lot of pent-up aggression. I’d say it’s just the beginning of an even heavier era for me

Your career trajectory has been nothing but up for the past years, with many flagship label releases and the creation of a truly impactful collective, GRL GANG.  Do you have a vision of where you’d like to see your music go in the future? What about the GRL GANG collective as a whole? 

I definitely plan to explore my sound more and work with new artists as well as continue to focus on solo releases. My main goal is just to keep progressing and hope to see GRL GANG continue to do the same.

There’s still a long way to go for the dance music industry in terms of inclusion, equality, and equity. What do you hope the scene will be in the future for women who want to break into the industry?

I agree, but I do think we’re going in the right direction. I hope to see more and more festival lineups, labels and the rest of the industry, in general, be more diverse moving forward, which will absolutely inspire more women to be a part of the industry. We need them!

What should we expect from the mix? Where are you taking us?

Tons of unreleased music from me and my friends as well as some fire underground shit and some of my favorite songs to play at the moment!

Your sound has been drifting more towards the dubstep and heavy bass realm. Is this the direction you’re headed in for the foreseeable future?

Absolutely. I’ve been playing dubstep in my sets for a while, but I think a lot of people still associate me with just trap for the most part because that’s what I started out with. I have definitely been incorporating more of it into both my production and sets though, so it’s only heavier from here.

If your DJ sets were a cocktail what would the ingredients be?

It would be like an adios motherfucker – looks harmless but will fuck you up. :)

Has your job as Editor-in-Chief at Noiseporn helped at all with your career as an artist? If so in what ways?

Sort of. It definitely helps me discover new artists and keep up with who’s making cool shit, but I tend to keep that part of my career completely separate. I’ve always wanted the focal point of my project to be my music and not my other work, but it’s funny when people find out and are like WTF?! It’s an important aspect of the business to know though.

Your life seems to be pretty ingrained in music. What do you enjoy doing when you need a break from music?

It really is. But I love thrift/vintage shopping, watching horror movies and reading as much as I can. Also I’ve been addicted to TikTok lately, haha.

Earlier this month you celebrated your 2 year anniversary (congratulations!) and you noted how you don’t share much of your personal life on social media. What can you tell us that some people would be surprised to know about you?

Thank you! Hm… I’m 100% Russian, I was a cheerleader for 6+ years and I’m an awful singer. Also I’m a huge perfectionist when it comes to my work.

You started GRL GANG about a year and a half ago. How has the experience been so far? What are you most proud of to date?

It’s been incredible – I consider GRL GANG my family. I never started it for my own benefit, but it’s brought so many amazing people into my life and I’m so grateful to have built such an accepting and uplifting community. I’m probably most proud of GRLFEST, which was our first virtual festival last month. It was one of the most stressful, but rewarding, things I’ve done to date.

What are your goals for GRL GANG for the remainder of the year?

I’m working on planning a GRLFEST 2 and starting to expand the brand in other ways. We had some live shows planned as well, but those will have to wait.

People often discredit the success of female producers by either pinning them against each other, gossiping about ghost producers, objectifying them, etc. What can we do to help combat the hate and uplift women in dance music?

In my opinion, it starts with promoters and labels, etc. to lead by example. I think in general, providing more opportunities for women creates a less competitive and more welcoming environment overall. I will say, I feel like there’s been a lot more support for women in the industry the past couple of years and it’s really dope. Also, just don’t objectify women or assume they have ghost producers for no reason… it’s wack.

What do you have planned in terms of releases for the remainder of 2020?

An EP coming soon. ;)

All proceeds that come out of GRL GANG are donated to Girls, Inc., which we think is pretty amazing. If one thing’s for sure, she is unapologetically herself and a role model to other women who are thinking about making music.

JEANIE’s SPEED (Remixes) will hype you up

If you’re looking for some bass, it doesn’t get much better than ‘SPEED’ but this 8-track compilation of remixes featuring a variety of genres has something for everyone.

XAVAGE keeps the trap essence of ‘SPEED’ with his own darker drops, sirens, and vocals to make the track his own. Michael Mason takes a much lighter approach to the song. His chill future trap version is fun to get up and dance to! It’s almost reminiscent of Cashmere Cat and Trippy Turtle a-lá-2014. Another special shoutout to REZI who really killed this remix. He seamlessly blends experimental bass and trap, making ‘SPEED’ a mesmerizing song you’ll never get bored of no matter how many times you put it on repeat. (Although, I may be biased since his Electric Hawk release, ‘Cry For You,’ is one of my favorite bangers of 2020.)

She’s both in the hip-hop and electronic music space, working with artists like A$AP Ferg, Dave East, and Bauuer! Her song ‘Gather Round’ featuring FOURTEE and her collab with WondaGurl (who we’ll be talking about later), ‘Play Tough’ make anyone girl feel like they can take on the world.

LA is unofficially home of the trap, so it’s no surprise Emily Patterson, aka episcool, resides here. She consistently puts out some of the best beats and is criminally underrated. Whether you want some grime or something more chill, she has something in store for you. The best examples of her being able to seamlessly blend different subgenres of trap in one track are one of her newest songs,  ‘wasabi’ and her collab with Dabow called ‘gastown.’

If you’re a classic trap junkie like us, you’ve gotta check out Godlands. Her music is the chef’s kiss trap of all trap. Not many people create pure trap anymore, so if you have a trap void you need to fill in your heart, Godlands will fill it. While she’s worked with legends like Stööki Sound (with her song ‘No Stress’ featuring Jelacee of Stooki Sound and Jeanie), she also makes bangers of her own. Like, have you heard her new track ‘Smoke Em Up,’ yet? Needless to say, I’m fucking obsessed. Get to know more about her in our interview with her.

While we’d consider Jeanie more of a bass artist—based on her live shows—rather than trap, she did start off as a trap artist. And she also consistently drops trap tracks on her SoundCloud, even recently collaborating with Godlands, who we mentioned above. She’s from Brooklyn, so I obviously stan, but even 2 of her more recent tracks, ‘SPEED’ and ‘HEADSHOT’ are a trap and bass lover’s dream.

#5: Megan Hamilton

Now I’m a little biased with this one (she’s not really trap or rap) because I just spoke with her on the phone and she was chill as fuck. Megan Hamilton is super dope and although her genre is technically midtempo funky house, her inspiration comes from classic hip-hop like A Tribe Called Quest, and it really shows. Her tunes come with a groovy, rhythmic melody that you can easily dance to, very much so in the spirit of ATQC. She never shies away from showing her hip-hop roots and even started off by producing hip-hop.

Megan Hamilton labeled one of her songs ‘Low Low’—which she also produced, did the vocals, instruments, mixed, and mastered—as future bass. But with those snares and vocals, I’ll have to make an executive decision and say it is, in fact, trap. Her love of hip hop shines as she also remixes a lot of hip-hop songs and gives her own flair to them like in one of my favorites from Megan, her flip of  Kendrick’s ‘Humble.’

#6: TOKiMONSTA

If you haven’t seen TOKiMONSTA live, you’re missing out. The girl knows how to put on a good show. We wouldn’t call LA-based producer, Jennifer Lee, a female trap producer since she wears many hats. Plus, she’s worked with artists like Lil Uzi Vert and Earthgang. But we can confidently say her music and live shows have enough trap elements to put her on the list. TOKiMONSTA was diagnosed with Moyamoya disease in late 2015 and she had to undergo two brain surgeries because of it. For a short period of time, she had lost language and comprehension skills yet still began working on Lune Ruge, despite her health struggles. Lee is the epitome of ‘I’M A BAD BITCH, YOU CAN’T KILL ME!’

While her genre variety can’t be beaten, there’s no denying that rappers love working with her like ‘NO WAY’ featuring Isaiah Rashad, Joey Purp & Ambré and ‘Fried for the Night’ featuring EARTHGANG.

How have we not heard of Shakari Linder, aka TRAKGIRL, before? She’s been featured on Forbes, Complex, BET, and has worked with names like Jhene Aiko and Omarion. Linder is using her girl power for good, encouraging self-awareness and women empowerment in the music industry! As an entrepreneur—she doesn’t stop there. Linder also runs lifestyle brand, PAY US TODAY. The company’s mission is to get creators and producers a fair wage as well as fair business rights.

If you love hip hop, you better start learning TRAKGIRL’s name because her producing skills are off the charts. She helped create R&B and hip-hop bangers like Crystal Cain’s ‘Black Jesus’ and King Chip’s ‘Queen.’

Née Ebony Naomi Oshunrinde, WondaGurl is a Canadian producer who has worked with huge names in rap like Jay Z, Kanye West, Drake, Big Sean…and the list goes on. Her discography is stacked. Her influence on the hip-hop community can’t go unnoticed. And her work ethic is unmatched. She started producing at 9 years old, on her keyboard with drum pads. By the age of 15, she had won first place at Battle of The Beat Makers competition.

Speaking of huge artists she’s produced for, WondaGurl was the one who producted Lil Uzi Vert’s ‘Scott and Ramona’ and Juicy J and Logic’s ‘Ain’t Fuckin Wit Cha.’

Korean-American producer Yaeji is wildly known in the electronic music community. Her unique style of music has listeners dancing passionately, seductively, slowly, and on beat. She blends house and hip-hop seamlessly while incorporating her heritage in her music She uses both English and Korean vocals in her tracks, and we’re here for it! The Brooklyn baddie performed her first Coachella in 2018, so we can’t wait to see what else is up her sleeve.

The best example of Yaeji’s hip-hop mixing is probably her “Yaeji Season: Yaeji’s All Season Mix.” Can confirm this mix is good to go for all seasons… but especially Hot Girl Summer season.

“The main goal of GRL GANG is to unite females within the music industry and create a sense of community. With some of the workshops and initiatives, I’ll be working to expand the awareness of women in music and help provide resources for music production, industry knowledge + more,” she explains. GRL GANG aims to be completely inclusive with no application process. They’re currently inviting women (sorry no boys allowed) to join their Discord as a way to get involved and stay connected.  

In addition to their digital efforts GRL GANG will also be looking to make an impact IRL with a series of workshops and events. “We are currently in the planning stages of a production-based workshop. Music Producer’s Club is a local group that I’ve partnered with and they’ve hosted many similar successful events. These workshops will allow attendees to learn from an experienced producer and share their works in progress, as well as hang out with other like-minded people, which is always a great time,” JEANIE says.

With a guest mixes, workshops, events and more on the horizon, look out for GRL GANG taking over in 2019.

Cozway

Ok so this guy right here…he’s now got the top 2 most played tracks on Jadu Dala, along with his knee-breaking track ‘Windbreaker’ getting played out at most major festivals around the globe. So much love for his sound as he is really trying to push for quality over quantity and it’s paid off a ton! Percussive driven rhythms with stripped back drums that are a much needed breath of fresh air in the bass scene. Need a new obsession? Check the tracks below.

Duke & Jones

These two UK based weapons have been hiding in silence with a lot of ammunition for a hot minute. This year they have gone from silence, to releasing their newest single ‘Tusk’ on Deadbeats with a HUGE Billboard premiere! They have also had an official remix release through Circus records. Keep an eye out this next month for some spicy releases from these two.

JEANIE

Phat low end with biting snares. JEANIE’s sound is nothing short of an ice cream Sundae with ALL the toppings. A perfect mixture of that bass design base with a sprinkle of lightly salted distortion on the top. Amazing arrangement in every single track from the Queen herself, JEANIE.

Leet

Leet has taken the scene by storm in the past year with one of his most recent releases with Snuffy ‘incoherent,’ getting noticed from the likes of Electric Mantis! From chicken samples to phat low end 808s, this guy has so much momentum right now. Have a scout out and stay tuned for his upcoming tracks.

Razat

Half time distortion with full pan pot sauce snares! Razat has been on my radar for a good year or so now. Track after track he offers a new rhythm occupying his signature distorted bass. His track ‘d:beat’ got a considerable amount of well deserved love from the SoundCloud community! ‘D:beat’ is a loose yet clever blend of simplicity and rhythm that just fills a dance floor. Roxas & Klahrk

I put these two together because, well…I’m sure they were separated when they fell from the UFO that dropped them off. Alien structures with sounds that have been pulled through a packer punch then spread on a beautiful piece of french toast. These two are honestly pushing hard on the experimentation side of the bass scene! Amazing creators.

The track pairs her rugged bass chops with snapping drums, perfectly placed samples and some rap swagger. “All of the vocals in ‘NASA’ came from this random group SapBoys, which is a side project from this dope producer named Gangus who kindly let me use the acapella. They just put out really weird/wonky shit and I thought it was great haha,” JEANIE tells us. She’s not the only one. The combination of the SapBoys’ bars and out of this world production collide for a rugged sound that’s darker than the blackness of space. As for what inspired the sound, “Well I knew I wanted to go really heavy for the first track of the EP, but the track itself was inspired by Zeke Beats, who whips out some of the craziest productions ever, so I think that’s where the main inspiration came from. I just want to f*ck people up I guess. In a good way though.” Mission accomplished.
