They gave listeners a preview of the project with a dark future bass tune by Tails, ‘Close2Me’ and Duskus’ future garage ‘Holdin U’. We even had the pleasure of premiering Pocket & Rohaan’s ‘idontwannabeafraid’. But to get a full view of their vision, you just have to listen through for yourself.

The standout track for me on the compilation was the last single, ‘Untitled21’ by Couros. You’ll see a huge UKG influence throughout the tape, but for some reason, ‘Untitled21’ hit different. The track’s solacing vocal chops surrounded me like a warm blanket on a cold day. The production was almost palliative, giving a satisfying feeling with each and every listen.

Although bitbird’s roots are in classic future bass, if you become familiar with their discography, you’ll come to find that they do work hard to reinvent the genre. Whether it’s exploring indie and alternative sounds, getting inspiration from UK bass, or bringing underground producers to the forefront—whatever bitbird’s doing, it’s working for us.

‘find your way’ is nothing but beautiful and heart-wrenching. With their first collaboration having such a house atmosphere, they decided to switch it up with a slower approach. Bipolar Sunshine’s vocals really take the spotlight throughout. His soft and elegant nature when singing his heart out really touches your soul. And once the chorus kicks in, it’ll make the listener feel as if they were flying high through the sky. Searching for their true self within the universe. And the way San Holo processed Bipolar’s harmonies in the form of a lead was incredible. An airy and dreamy-sounding section to top it all off. It really brought out both of their styles perfectly. This was by far a fantastic way to kick off San’s upcoming album. You’ll be truly addicted to the feeling no matter what.

Both San and Bipolar are such hard and dedicated workers to their craft. Whether it be collaborations or originals, you’ll feel the same amount of passion with each release. Since its release in September of last year, San Holo has been busy touring the world showcasing his album1 project in a new, unparalleled live show that blurs the lines between a concert and a rave. When I found out that the Dutch musician was going to be in Amsterdam for the final show of the European leg, there was no question that I had to attend. And, despite dozens of shows and countless hours of travelling, it was obvious that San Holo gave it his all for his hometown (well, home country) crowd.

As the first and only opener, Taska Black took the stage early to deliver a whirlwind of a set as the crowd gathered. It’s not obvious getting people to a show at 7:30, and the room was fairly empty when he first took the stage, but as the crowd quickly grew, so did Taska Black’s energy. After only ten minutes into his set, it was obvious why San Holo chose such a talented artist as the opener to his tour. Playing a diverse mix of his originals and remixes as well as future bass and trap classics (think along the lines of Point Point’s ‘All This’), the Antwerp native had the crowd going wild for the entirety of his set.

When San Holo took the stage, the room was fully packed. The venue played to San’s advantage with a large dance floor and two levels of surrounding balconies, perfect for fans who either wanted to get sweaty in the crowd or enjoy the show from a distance. Among the latter included dozens of San Holo’s family and friends who gathered from around the Netherlands to support their Zoetermeer-born legend.

San Holo’s performance was truly exceptional. Playing album1 (mostly) in order while peppering in classics such as ‘We Rise’, the ninety-minute set was a beautiful offering of San’s musical genius. From playing the guitar riffs and singing the lyrics of his tracks live, to throwing in some emotional guitar solos, to getting behind the decks and making live edits of his soul-stirring originals, San Holo had the crowd engaged from start to finish. The time and effort spent into making the experience sonically and visually immersive did not go unnoticed, and the energy poured into his performance made it difficult to believe this was his eleventh show of the month. Although he spoke Dutch to the crowd for the majority of the show, there’s no denying the connection he made with the die-hard fans in the front row, while also acknowledging the people in the stands on multiple occasions, catering the show to all who attended.

An encore featuring another riveting guitar solo and the euphoric ‘Light’ capped off the phenomenal evening. As this was the first live performance of a producer that I’ve witnessed, San Holo set the bar high for these concert-rave crossovers. Any fan of both indie and electronic music will have the time of their life at San Holo’s album1 tour. Get your tickets here if he comes to a city near you in the coming months.

Joking of course, but what could I say while facing the umpteenth Laxcity’s wonder?

Well, thinking about it, now the competition for the title of best ‘Lift Me From The Ground’ remix is extremely hard. I think we all agree that is a fierce tête-à-têt between this and Jaron’s version. In my modest opinion, Jaron wins the first drop battle. There’s no way that the intense and uplifting energy can be beaten. But, inevitably, the second round goes, hands down, to Laxcity. The d&b spin is simply incredible, totally unexpected and latched on so perfectly with his sound that it made me look at his style with a whole new perspective.

With the official ‘Forever’ remix just dropped, and another one for Alina Baraz coming in the next weeks, it seems that Laxcity is in a state of grace for reinterpretations. If, instead, you’re thirsty for originals after his debut album, be sure to check out all the IDs in his Too Future mix.

Unleashing a tasteful new style which builds upon his rock and vocal upbringing, blends in pieces of his sensational future bass sound and touches in areas of ambiance. Adhering strictly to protocol, all of the features and vocalists spent time in-person, in the studio with San to ensure that the creative process flowed seamlessly between the contributing artists, which shines brilliantly through the overall rhythm and dexterity of the album as a whole.

A longing siren speckled with faint horns sets a euphoric mood in ‘everything matters (when it comes to you)‘, joined by a watery synth pattern briefly masking a rhythmic drum assemblage growing swiftly in volume, which catapults the song into a vibey sound space of contrasting soft strings and high pitched risers. The rhythm of the tune breaks momentarily before a nostalgic string pattern brings the track back into a sensational melody of bells, horns, and synths. At just after the midway point of the tune the hopeful synths are joined by a delicate, whispering chorus which gently leads the tune back to the rhythmic melody.

An electrifying pattern of bouncy synths open ‘lift me from the ground‘, a quick rising horn introduces the eloquent, silky smooth vocals courtesy of Sofie Winterson and glorifying congregation of strings. As the grandiose introduction draws to a close the lulling synth pattern returns coherently with a hushed, yearning chorus. The vocals gently grow in intensity, joined by an inspirational beat, which gains pace and launch into a spectacular drop of ascending bells and floral synths.

A retro pattern of synths and subtle guitar plucking are joined by a longing chorus in ‘show me‘, as a longing horn sounds in the distance the drums and intricacies of the track begin. A hopeful, rhythmic plucking build energy in the tune briefly, before the track breaks into a euphoric collection of bells, which brilliantly meld hope and nostalgia.

We had the opportunity to get an early peek at the 4th track in the album, ‘brighter days‘ featuring lyrics from Bipolar Sunshine. The song is a brilliant combination of styles and we really hope you take a look at the piece to get a closer look at the really unique creative process between the two talented artists.

Thrilling, strident vocals from James Vincent McMorrow line the introduction of ‘always on my mind‘ featuring string contributions from the talented Yvette Young. As an evocative synth grows in strength, a rigid snare launches the song into an onslaught of massive bass notes and sanguine strings. Faint angelic chimes offer a momentous break in the melody, joined by a craving hum, which reintroduces the sentimental chanting melody and an absolutely inspirational chorus of strings.

‘go back in time‘ opens with an infectious wavering synth, which breaks into a riveting, techno-reminiscent chorus. A buoyant pattern of strings guides the tune to a meticulously crafted melody of bells and horns.

An ambient chorus joined by a nostalgic melody of strings provide a warm introduction for ‘love‘ featuring Cassini. As the pace of the drums hastens, a stunning compilation of resonating synths and tightly wound snares unleash. A faint vocal accompaniment backed with a gentle longing string provide an encouraging pause in the melody, before the growing hopeful strings re-energize the adjournment of the tune.

A high-pitched, beckoning siren and retro synthesizers are joined quickly by an upbeat drum riser propelling ‘voices in my head‘ into a bouncing pattern of blissful synths and addictive humming. A swift break introduces a marvelous vocal chorus, which flows effortlessly with accompanying bells before dropping back into the electrifying melody.

Mellow strings unveil a filter-heavy vocal piece, which depict the relatable interpersonal struggles of self pride in ‘worthy‘. A growing, rhythmic snare pattern backs the pronging question “Tell me, am I worthy?” hurling the song into a charge of hefty bass hits and a mesmerizing pattern of synths.

‘forever free‘ featuring London-based producer Duskus begins with a drowned out vocal loop amid a gentle riser. As the vocals break an opulent string melody resonates unaccompanied, joined by a gradually increasing pattern of drums, which heighten the pace of the song. As the horns draw to a brief pause, a wonderful child-like sample provides a reassuring hopefulness before the vocal cadence and noble melody return.

Dreamy vocals from Caspian provide an air of motivation in ‘surface‘, a perfectly timed pause gives rise to an obsessive chorus of elegant synths and gripping strings, accentuated with heavenly, angelic chanting. As the energy fades out, the hopeful string melody breathes life back into the tune, joined with emotional, expressive vocals and a tempting pattern of synths.

An exquisite loop of bells heightened by a swift riser quickly sling ‘vestal avenue‘ into an immersive, euphoric soundscape characterized by fiercely emotional synths, taught snares and a sensational cadenced chanting. The distinguished plucked chords and piano subtleties provide an outstanding night cap to a superb project.

album1 demonstrates with astounding precision the depth and virtue of San Holo’s multidisciplinary talents. Sander reminisces on his experience working alongside Bipolar Sunshine, “The first time I met Bipolar Sunshine we had a studio set up in the kitchen of an Airbnb. He came to our place and we started writing on the couch and outside, wherever, got some coffee…it felt very natural writing songs with him, we were very much on the same wavelength regarding lyrics. I’ve always loved the song he did for DJ Snake, ‘Middle.’ I really love his songwriting and his voice, I love the fact that his voice is not so perfect and it’s got some rough edges. You can authentically hear that in the recording as well, the verses are not perfect, it’s not perfectly polished, but it sounds very unique and very much like him.”
