Above and Below is an institution in the underground. Originally operating as Below The Surface and Above The Surface, the dual-sided label and collective has evolved into a single entity while keeping the spirit of both facets alive. Artist owned and operated the platform is run by THRPY and soulecist. With a focus on breaking new sounds and pushing boundaries, they’ve been introducing us to new artists for years. To provide fans with an inside look at the tastemakers we’ve connected with Above and Below for an exclusive Guest Mix + Interview.

The interview explores what they are excited about musically, future expansion efforts, their community focus, and much more. As for the mix, it was put together by two of their newest members Declan and nikko. Split into two halves, it’s a perfect showcase of their dichotomy. The first portion is melodic, emotional, and uplifting while the back half explores a darker, deeper, and harder-hitting energy. Listen below.

What should we expect from the mix?

Two of the newest members of our team Declan and nikko curate a tasteful mix of their favorite Above and Below releases as well as a few tracks from our community.

Where are you taking listeners?

We are taking listeners on a journey through our previous catalog and songs that inspire us to put out some of the best forward-thinking electronic music.

You were previously running Above and Below The Surface as separate labels. What prompted you to bring them together under a singular entity?

We are trying to fuse our counterparts together. While the essence of our brand plays on the idea of duality we have found that we don’t need to separate those sounds onto different channels.

We want listeners to think of our releases as ear candy. We want them to be in awe and wonder how those sounds are even possible.

Your platform is well-known for breaking new talent. Do you have any tips or secrets on how to stay ahead of the curve musically?

We listen for sound design, musicality, and flow that is absolutely groundbreaking. We want listeners to think of our releases as ear candy. We want them to be in awe and wonder how those sounds are even possible. We feel like most of our fans are producers so we try to elevate music production to the next level.

Are there any particular new sounds or trends that have you excited at the moment?

We are heavily into bouncy tracks with melodic aspects and hard drops. We like futuristic trap beats with rnb and pop vocals.

You’ve been releasing sample packs alongside a number of your singles. What inspired you to make this move? What’s the reception been like?

We are aiming to establish ourselves as a boutique music and sample pack label. We haven’t fully launched the pack yet as we are still testing our website tech. The folks who have purchased or tested the packs have been in love with them and we feel strongly that they will be a major factor in our success for 2022.

You also launched a subscription-based tiered model. Can you tell us a little bit about how it works and what subscribers can expect?

The current subscription is in beta but soon we will be offering 2 high-quality wav. downloads a month for $.99. This is more for our DJ fans and die-hard listeners. We will also offer a tier that includes 2 sample packs and 2 wavs for 9.99 a month. This is for our producer fans that want access to our samples and music downloads. These packs are extremely unique and will help producers level up their production in a forward-thinking way.

Above & Below has built a really impressive community. What factors lead to its growth and how do you plan to continue to sustain it?

We have been active with the SoundCloud, Twitch, and Discord communities for a while now but we really plan to ramp up things in late 2022. We are aiming to provide more value for our community and listeners.

You’ve been teasing some upcoming NFT projects. What should fans expect from you in this space?

We have signed with a company called RCRDSHP and we plan to launch and few types of collectibles with them. We can’t say too much just yet but we will be offering our die-hard collector fans a way to own unique NFTS which include unlockable assets, access to private experiences, and more. These are on the way very soon.

At the start of 2022 you tweeted, “What are your top 5 goals for 2022? And what are some steps for achieving them?” I’d like to pose this question back to you.

Continue to grow our brand by adding more value for our community.

Start hosting feedback streams, Twitter spaces, and community discussions.

Launch our Subscription service and marketing strategy.

Launch our NFT collectibles and marketing strategy.

Expand the blog on our website and start supporting other artists, labels, and brands.

We love to push the boundaries of electronic music and we hope that you ride with us on this massive wave of sound.

Any final words for fans?

Thank you all for your continued support. We truly appreciate every single stream or download and we look forward to bringing you the best music, samples, and experiences we can find. We love to push the boundaries of electronic music and we hope that you ride with us on this massive wave of sound.

Gliding into our dreams, THRPY and MEL are here to make them come true. With their newest single, ‘Faded’, they’ve touched our hearts with gentle praise. The combination of THRPY’s impactful and lush sound design and MEL’s star-striking vocals can make any crowd fall in love. A complete spell over our minds, wanting more with each second going by. THRPY has proved to be one of the most powerful and insightful within the underground scene. His golden touch can turn any song into a hit. While MEL is the perfect musician to recruit for such a colorful atmosphere. Her extended and sophisticated range can leave anyone with such peaceful aftermath. Both are such a wonderful team when combing true raw talent. Let their newest track take you away from all the negativity in life.

‘Faded’ holds the listener’s hand and guides them through the tough times. Starting off with a soothing reece bass along with MEL’s haunting and satisfying vocal, it sets a mysterious and gorgeous tone for all to become hypnotized by. As the buildup forms and takes shape, a rush of excitement and curiosity rushes over your body. Eager to hear what’s coming. And all of a sudden, THRPY hits you with some eclectic sounds and properties. From a soft drum rhythm to mind-blowing glitch style leads, it takes your breath away and catches it. A wisp of everlasting feelings and emotions. Floating from side to side. A dream you won’t want to end.

Right after, MEL comes swooping in with her vocals yet again for a beautiful breakdown section. Leading us into the second chorus. Not knowing what the listener can expect, they brace for another euphoric impact. Until finally, they both take a bow by unleashing a bright emerald light over the final drop. Adding the extra layer of future bass chords to top it all off was the icing on the cake. The sweet aroma surrounding the track as a whole will make your jaw drop. Make sure to go support them both by streaming ‘Faded’ everywhere via Tribal Trap!

Intricate musicians THRPY and Lox Chatterbox just dropped a heater on Tribal Trap titled ‘Crystallized.’ THRPY continues to impress listeners and artists all over SoundCloud. His out of the box thinking when creating is always crisp and satisfying. He’s known for his hard-hitting drums and unique sound design. And releasing on labels such as Hybrid Trap, Partica Artist Group and more, he’s been making a mark for himself within the underground electronic scene. Now he’s back, but with a little help.

Lox Chatterbox is a name you’ll want to remember. The California based artist continues to make his way around the industry with powerful vocals. Bringing his stories to life, he’s worked with major artists Bailo, Troyboi and more. His most recent project How To Live Forever pushes the boundaries within the hip-hop scene. Shining a fresh light on the genre as a whole. And to see these two come together is exciting and inspiring.

‘Crystallized’ is a mellow and vibe filled song. The combination of THRPY’s production and Lox Chatterbox’s vocals makes them a powerful force. Showing a softer side, THRPY incorporates lush future bass elements to smooth out transitions and the overall feel of the song. Complimenting the vocals in a beautiful fashion. From beginning to end, there’s a surprise around every corner. Whether it be the drums, or the choice of sounds, this track does not disappoint. And when the drop kicks in, it hits you in the best ways. Taking the listener away into another world. Not to mention the wavy flow from Lox. He knew exactly what to say to bring it all together.

‘Crystallized’ is a euphoric trip through time. If you adore unique and emotional music, this one is for you. We’re excited to see and hear what they deliver next. For now, go support them by streaming ‘Crystallized’ below.

Partica Artist Group & Good Nature Collective member, Danforth, has been impressing us lately with his releases like, ‘Tippin’ with Gurf, and ‘Footwork’. Bringing a banging bounce to a majority of his tracks, Danforth has continued to prove himself and grow stronger with each release, and now he’s brought us a fresh remix of THRPY and Golden Child’s, ‘Perks.’

The track started as part of Partica Artist Groups30 minute beat challenge on Twitch, Danforth recalls, “since I didn’t have time to overthink the original idea for the cypher, it gave me a really strong foundation for the remix and I was told by multiple producer homies I needed to finish it out. I love making tracks in the tempo it’s originally at but when I started my cypher entry I thought it would be fun to slow it down a bit and find a new groove for it while still keeping the tracks original integrity.”

Danforth begins his remix with a mesmerizing vocal loop paired with classic trap percussion that immediately lets you know that Danforth is not playing games. The build gives way to a gritty, sliding, metallic lead and groovy beat that double down in heat when Danforth adds some woodwinds that flutter about. A short break in the action occurs and then you are hit with even dirtier drop than the first. Danforth has made this remix super clean and it may sit as one of his top tracks yet.

Partica Artist Group is a collective based out of the east coast whose goal is to motivate and inspire creativity while continuing to be a driving force of the underground. Providing free samples with each release, Twitch live streams and their feedback nights, are just a few examples of things that set this collective apart from the rest. Partica goes above and beyond to help mold the community through experimentation and exploration of unheard sounds and all things trap and bass related. Propelling forward with their momentum, they return with their first release of November titled ‘Perks.’

This track brings together Above and Below the Surface owner Jerremy Laesser with experimental trap producer Anthony Vinciguerra, aka THRPY and Golden Child. The intro of ‘Perks’ is very subtle and ominous, giving listeners no insight for what is coming into play next. Out of nowhere, they drop the 808 bomb on us that continues to thump throughout the song. Moving further along, Laesser and Vinciguerra continue to build off of each other with seamless fills and wonky percussion arrangements assisted by a steady background siren. Adding more and more elements to the final stages, it becomes apparent how well these two artists swap ideas back and forth and intertwine with one another. As quickly as the track came in is as quick as it goes out, as they revert back to a gloomy atmosphere. Check out ‘Perks’ in its entirety below and grab the free download here.

Back in March Bay-area beatsmith THRPY blessed us with an incredible guest mix filled with originals and unreleased heat. Among the amazing array of sounds was one standout that featured a powerful guitar riff introduction and some crazy future bounce. We’ve been eagerly awaiting its release and today we have the pleasure of premiering ‘Lunch Money’. The track sees THRPY taking a break from the darker, harder, more sound designed focus and creating an upbeat heater with an incredible groove. “I was really inspired by like Chromonicci and dilip. I love the bounce and swing their beats have. I wanted to make something on the melodic side since most of my work is so dark. This song was more about a vibe and less about sound design for me. I just got a vibe and let it lead me. This track is pretty different so I’m stoked on releasing it. Especially with Surreal!” THRPY tells us about how the track came together.

The opening feels epic and commanding before the intoxicating groove pulls you in. THRPY proceeds to carefully add in elements from snappy snares to fat bass and cheery melodies. Continually progressing, ‘Lunch Money’ gets better with each passing second. It’s a laid-back groove that also slaps providing the perfect balance. Stream it below and grab it via Surreal.

Jerremy Laesser, better known by his producing alias THRPY, has been a consistent player in the bass music realms recently, between garnering massive support through his releases on Emengy, Phuture Collective, Sleeveless Records, and Saturate Records just to name a few, along with creating both Above & Below the Surface labels. Harnessing a unique approach to fusing traditional trap-style formations with punchy, grimy bass lines has quickly earned him far-reaching praise and recognition including playing at last year’s Lost Lands sound camps and at this year’s Saturate Records SXSW showcase. Now, he’s back with a new release on Below the Surface entitled ‘Top Shottas’, an immensely energetic and stylistic song sure to please both trap heads and fans of more experimental works.

The first thing that you’ll notice about ‘Top Shottas’ is just how hard hitting the kicks are, making a supremely satisfying thud on any decent sound system. Next, you’ll be roped in by the impressive snare work and full-bodied 808’s, before Laesser viciously slaps your ear drums with a veritable waterfall of crushing bass. Adding in little audible treats like gun shots and a satisfying “ahh” sample resembling someone sipping a lemonade on a hot summer day, creates tangible space and keeps the audience guessing. This is a fantastic menagerie of trap influences, hollow wub sections, and thunder clapping kicks that culminate in a delicious feast of sonic delicacies. 2019 is sure to be a massive year for Laesser between his own self releases and the never-ending stream of fire content from his labels.

Check out ‘Top Shottas’ for yourself below!

The Slow Roast release was one of my favorite tracks of the year and still slaps to this today. Since then, THRPY has continued to impress with stellar collabs alongside DECAP, DJ Ride, L*O*J and more. We had also had the pleasure of premiering his brain-bending bass epic ‘BrainDrops’ last year. If that wasn’t enough, the talented producer is the mind behind Below The Surface, a record label that has been helping to define the sound of the underground for the past two and a half years. A friend and fan of FUXWITHIT, it’s overdue for us to connect with THRPY for an exclusive Guest Mix and interview. The mix is a true showcase of his diverse talents. It’s 30+ minutes of all his own productions and is packed with unreleased heaters. If you’ve been wondering what to expect from THRPY in 2019, this is your answer. As for the interview, we discuss what drives him to create, his dreams, Below The Surface and more. Check it out below.

What was your goal in putting this mix together?

I absolutely love FUXWITHIT and when I was asked to do a mix I was stoked. Traditionally I would record a mix of some originals and tracks from my labels and friends. For this mix I decided on doing something I’ve never done before. I’ve included only original tracks, mostly unreleased and since my inspiration has been taking me all over the place creatively I’ve just focused on showcasing my new stuff instead of making a seamless mix.

I was a b-boy and competed professionally which eventually guided my love for music and beats.

What drives you to make music?

Well my whole life I’ve looked for creative outlets. From a young kid I was a b-boy and competed professionally which eventually guided my love for music and beats. I produced mostly hip-hop for a number of years while also going to raves and dancing. As my hobby got more serious I started to blend sounds that inspired me. Now I guess my sound is an EDM/hip-hop potpourri.

Are you able to share any production tips or secrets related to how you make your tracks so banging?

Yes, I’ve learned a lot from my peers. One thing focusing on making your drums knock. One big tip is learning to use sidechaining, compression and a soft clipper.

There’s a ton of unreleased tunes in the mix. What are your release plans for 2019?

My goal this year is mainly growing my labels Above and Below The Surface. I’d like to create an outlet for other amazing underground producers to shine and succeed. As for my music I’ve been creating so much and my goal is to drop one track per month focusing heavily on Spotify. I’d love to play more shows/festivals but I’m currently working full-time as well to afford living in the Bay area!

I dream about growing a brand that can help others. Not only musicians but also friends that I know have talent and could be amazing in business.

You recently tweeted, “Someone dreams of having the life that you consider depressing.” What do you dream about?

I dream about growing a brand that can help others. Not only musicians but also friends that I know have talent and could be amazing in business. I’d love to bring up the underground community and share forward thinking and innovative sounds. I also dream of being successful doing what I am passionate about such as producing music and playing live. Sometimes when I post or tweet things like that they are also messages for myself to remember. I have had a rough past and sometimes depression gets me down but I have to remind myself that someone out there is content with having worse. It’s all about your metric for understanding what happiness is. A great book is “The subtle art of not giving a fuck”. It’s a daily challenge and constant practice for me.

What do you do for fun outside of music?

I love to skate, snowboard, hang with my friends and my dog. I work a million hours so I really try to enjoy my time off. Sometimes a little too much hehe.

How did Below the Surface come together? Why did you feel it needed to exist?

As I started getting more into EDM I noticed that I was really fond of some genres more than others. I found labels such as Rauthentic and Daruma and they were huge inspirations. I met a few people in the SoundCloud repost game and they sort of showed me the ropes. They gave me some of my first opportunities to grow fast and build a label.

How has it evolved over time?

At first I started a whole network with a variety of genres and channels. I kinda bit off more than I could chew. Below The Surface used to be called hella trap. After I got established a friend needed some help and I was in the position to buy a growing label off him, which later became Above The Surface which is curated by soulecist. After years of trial and error I figured out exactly what I wanted to promote and what community I want to build.

You recently launched The Surface Agency. Can you tell us a little bit about it and what you guys have in store?

I met a really great friend named Harley and at first he was helping manage my THRPY bookings. After our friendship grew and I recognized many of his talents we had the idea to merge our businesses and come together to create an agency. I like to refer to it as a family to ensure that talented artists are getting what they deserve and are not taken advantage of. Our Roster can be found at aboveandbelow.co

I really hope I can create some inspiration and happiness for some people out there in the world.

What are you most excited about in 2019?

This year we have taken the biggest leap in the brand aboveandbelow.co and we have many new things to share such as, more sound packs, contests, new merch, festival booths and of course lots of amazing music. As for THRPY, I just can’t wait to share all this music I’ve been making. I really hope I can create some inspiration and happiness for some people out there in the world.

A group of producers worth getting familiar with, THRPY and L*o*J, form an alliance once again in a heavyweight contended track titled ‘Flex‘ which is out now through emengy. In the ten month span since their last collaborative effort, their sound design and layering skills have only matured. This track will prove to be a staple in the world of trap with nearly 10k plays in the three days it has been out.

THRPY, also known as Jerremy Laesser, is the mastermind behind labels Below the Surface as well as Above the Surface, which provides a platform and well deserved spotlight for up and coming producers. He has a pure vision for bringing out fresh and forward-thinking trap and should be given proper credit for the trail he has created in the underground scene. He has teamed up with L*o*J once before on ‘All This‘, and their latest efforts live up to the expectations of a second collaboration. L*o*J have maintained steady with their releases through the likes of Quality Goods Records, Phuture Collective, and Below the Surface to name a few. On top of their consistency in high caliber releases, they also hold a second SoundCloud account specifically for releasing older material and beats which can be found here.

‘Flex’ started when the stems were sent to THRPY by L*o*J and had already contained leads with a natural groove. Jerremy felt an immediate urge to throw down a thick bass line that instilled a wonky reverberation. The vocals generated are also the voice of THRPY himself which gives this track an advantage to typical songs containing a random vocal from a random pack. This is the direct result of three polished and adept producers who are keen on real trap production, giving the SoundCloud vultures everything they crave. These three artists passion for pushing beyond genre boundaries helps keep things raw and revolutionary. Check out each artists catalog as soon as possible and tune into their latest coalescence below.

Two of bass music’s finest producers, alongside two of bass music’s best labels, it just feels right. THRPY and Dj Ride have teamed up for ‘On Lock,’ an insane heater off the SLEEVELESS vs SATURATE! Saturated Warriors compilation which drops Jan. 15th. Ahead of the full album’s release, we have the honour of debuting one of the standout records. ‘On Lock’ is just under 3 minutes of abusive bass, brain-bending sound design and eye-popping samples. It blends a hip-hop inspired swagger with a menacingly experimental bounce. “I’m most proud of the lead sound design. Stumbled across a new technique and it just came our beautifully weird,” THRPY tells us.

A track of this calibre couldn’t just end anywhere as THRPY explains, “We were patient in finding the perfect home for the track. I have been a fan of both Saturate and Sleeveless and it was a goal of mine to release with them. The track compliments the compilation very well I think.” Don’t let his modesty mislead you, ‘On Lock’ is an absolute standout on a compilation that’s extremely stacked. Stream it below and look for Saturated Warriors next week.
