Oklahoma City based Kevin Hickey, known his production alias TYNAN, has been a force to be reckoned with in the realms of dark, heavy bass music for the past several years. Crafting a genre-bending overall aesthetic with his productions, he’s triumphantly tackled everything from hard-hitting trap, gut-busting dubstep, and tear-jerking melodic pieces, all to rave reviews. 2019 has been a year of massive overall success for this steadily growing artist, with several of his releases amassing well over 100,000 plays a piece, appearances at many of the biggest festivals in the country, and several diverse DJ mixes showcasing his unrestricted stylings. We had the great pleasure to catch up with him right after his last release ‘Interdimensional’ with vocals from the wonderfully talented Rouxx.

Where does the name TYNAN come from?

It’s actually my middle name. Fun fact: it also means “dark” in gaelic.

To see people halfway across the world actually know what my music is. I don’t know, it’s a trip.

What’s been the biggest highlight of 2019 for you so far?

Oh boy, there’s too many to choose from! It would probably be playing Japan over the summer. That was something that seemed so far out of reach when I started this whole thing. To see people halfway across the world actually know what my music is. I don’t know, it’s a trip.

What other producers are you currently inspired by?
I would say I’m most inspired by producers who have their own sound and style that is their own. People like Space Laces, Svdden Death, LSDREAM, Peekaboo, Marauda. It’s something that’s hard to do and it inspires me to fully realize this weird concept for my music. Also, all of the up and coming producers who have insane sound design that makes me want to die (Leotrix, Control Freak, TRVCY, Jiqui, NVADRZ, etc.).

Tell me about the inspiration behind ‘Interdimensional.’

For ‘Interdimensional,’ I wanted to take a stab at writing a more poppy song. Something that you could actually listen to, while still retaining the craziness that I like to make. I really do feel like this song was a big step for me. The one thing I’ve wanted to with my music has been to make it more conceptual. Instead of writing the same bangers over and over again, I want to make something that will stick with the listeners. Something that is timeless. With ‘Interdimensional,’ it felt like I was getting closer to that.

Rouxx sounds fantastic on the vocals! How did you two get connected?

Dude he crushed it! We were actually connected through an old manager. He sent Rouxx the instrumental to the track, and Rouxx sent back the vocals and the rest is history.

Do you have any pre-set rituals?

Have a few drinks. Talk to fans/people around the venue. Maybe challenge them to connect four.

Some of my favorite shows have been in tiny dive bars with a barely functioning sound system and sweat dripping from the walls and ceilings. That type of energy is unmatched…

What’s been your favorite place to perform so far in your career? Any venues or fests still on your bucket list?

There’s still a good number of festivals I want to play out, specifically Electric Forest, especially with how much everyone hypes it up. But honestly, I prefer smaller more intimate shows than bigger festivals. Some of my favorite shows have been in tiny dive bars with a barely functioning sound system and sweat dripping from the walls and ceilings. That type of energy is unmatched, in my opinion.

Is there anything big in the works currently for the TYNAN project?

I dont want to spoil anything, but oh fuck yes. The next few months are going to be all over the place, but I honestly can’t wait to show everyone what’s in store.

Where do you see yourself this time next year?

Honestly, I don’t know. I just do what I want and hope for the best results haha.

With a wild ending to the decade, the next looks brilliantly bright for Kevin Tynan Hickey. With direct dealings with multiple of the largest labels in the game, a passionate fanbase, and increasingly aggressive and immaculate productions, 2020 and beyond are surely his oyster. Eager to see what he has coming next? You’re in luck, as his next release ‘Shy La Boof’ with Krischvn comes out Friday, and the VIP of ‘Extraterrestrial’ with Kompany is on the not-so-distant horizon. Keep your ears to the ground, as he could be one to change the entire face of the game in coming years.

‘Doughboi’ takes a shot to the abyss, as an expeditious build lurks feverishly in the background amid an ominous tolling of bells. A grungy, abrupt vocal loop permeates the foreground as the cadence of the track hastens, a sudden surge of bass unleashes a convulsion of low-resonating wobbles and captivating drum fills. The melody doubles back offering a momentary reprise before launching into a lethal second incursion of waning metallic synths and petulant eruptions of subs.

We are soaking up and thoroughly enjoying the new EP from TYNAN. The bass and trap producer has dropped music in the past across various labels, but this bundle of tracks sees a release via Wakaan. The label, run by Liquid Stranger, really pushes inventive styles of production, and Songs For Ghosts To Haunt To is a full-throttle display of this.

A deeply atmospheric intro immediately hits the spot. ‘Between The Devil And The Sea’ claws at you with expansive vibes, drawing you in closer. ‘Bye’ sharpens things straight up with its rhythmical power and ‘Ing’ again drags you along for the ride with intense builds. Shanghai Doom steps up for the wicked ‘Flatline.’ It comes at you with menace and suspense – a real creeper.

We love what Quality Goods’ associates sfam bring with ‘Fragile.’ They showcase their intricate attention to detail and together with TYNAN keep you guessing. Last but not least is ‘Pluto, the Black Cat.’ The best possible way to round off the EP unleashes itself with shattering riffs and distorted screeches – living up to its name.

Taking a broad view of the scene, there might not be any artist putting out as much heat as frequently as TYNAN. Only three months ago, he unleashed his monstrous Pandora’s Box EP, before contributing to the NOVA and ‘Babatunde‘ remix packs and sprinkling in a few originals, flips and mixes in the pot. Showing no signs of slowing down, the Oklahoma City-based artist is back with another darkly captivating project titled Songs for Ghosts to Haunt To, out now on Wakaan. “This might be my favorite EP I’ve made. On this one, I tried to go beyond my limits, even more so than I usually do. The end result is a loud, chaotic, beautiful mess that I can’t wait to share with the world,” TYNAN shares about his latest work.

Prior to the full project dropping later today, we’re excited to premiere the glass-shattering ‘Fragile’, a collaboration with New Orleans’ hottest talents, sfam. Also riding a hot streak of their own, sfam are coming off two jarring singles and look to make a statement with ‘Fragile’ alongside TYNAN.

A sombre melody and gloomy effects kick off the track, until a reverberating riff suddenly interrupts to warn of an impending riot. As the warning comes to a close, ‘Fragile’ is flipped into chaotic madness dominated by metallic synths and an earthquake-inducing sub that does not let up until the very end. Boasting crisp sound design and tangled intricacies, TYNAN and sfam’s unique styles meld together to create an eclectic trap tune ready to cause havoc on any darkened dance floor with its mechanical precision. Check out ‘Fragile’ below and grab it here!

There is a new EP just out through Wakaan. Liquid Stranger’s bass label is taking ‘Babatunde’ from PEEKABOO and G-Rex and giving it six fresh versions. The original was released in 2018 and has almost half a million streams to its name – we were feeling it.

Each remake on this EP lives up to expectation. PEEKABOO and G-Rex make a triumphant return with a VIP version of the mix, and it builds suspense from the offset before hitting you with the drops. Dirt Monkey utilises rhythmical depth on his version, whilst there is an epic energy to Eliminate’s which chops and changes rapidly.

Both TYNAN and LUZCID contribute the next couple of flips, with the former’s filling us with joy thanks to its deep, textured instrumentals. The up and coming duo um.. are given the task of rounding off the Babatunde EP, and do so with wonky beats and meandering shards of melody.

G-Rex says of this release: “For this remix EP, we went out and handpicked not only some amazing artists, but our great friends as well to remix our track. Each remix comes with their own unique style that makes the entire package cohesive and interesting.”

Collectively, the bass music scene has experienced a tremendous amount of growth and development over the course of the 2018 calendar year. With the dubstep sub-genre riddim sharing a portion of the spotlight, the desire for monstrous bass, precise cuts and an engulfing environment of resonating frequencies seems to be soaring higher than ever before; similar to the original explosion of excitement when infamous producers such as Rusko, Caspa, Skrillex, Flux Pavillion, and Excision first stoked the flames of dubstep in the mid-2000s.

Much like a growing seed, a genre demands fertile, nurturing soil and a deep running system of support roots in order to blossom into maturity and survive the competitive landscape of the music scene. Founded in early 2009, Never Say Die Records and founder SKisM have furnished the necessary foundation that has allowed the bass genre to grow to where it is today, not to mention expanding into new & exciting sub-genres.

Toting an arsenal of veteran names such as Zomboy, MUST DIE!, Eptic & Trampa, the label has more than solidified their dominance over the bass realm; releasing consecutive Never Say Die compilations every year since 2012, each further revealing the seasoned cast of artists that have contributed their influence to the dubstep we know and love today.

Despite an extensive back catalog, SKisM maintains a rigid focus on the present moment and watchful gaze on future endeavors; demanding that past artists and newly acquired talents ceaselessly test the boundaries of their creative ability, which has resulted in a versatile evolution of sound for the label since its origination in 2009.

Now, with the sixth installment of the coveted Never Say Die Records compilation, we are enamored to see debut contributions from Mastadon, ECRAZE, and TYNAN as well as heavy-hitting sounds from seasoned veterans and Soltan’s first release of the year. And, as with all predecessors, there is not a single weak link in sight, providing sound confirmation that NSD will only continue to rule in 2019.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/544917285″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Every established artist has a signature sound that makes them easily distinguishable among others, but perhaps the most unique of them all is Eptic. Within five seconds of any of his tracks, a true fan is able to identify him in any mix. His contribution to Vol. 6 is no exception, jumping on the riddim bandwagon with his distinctive flair to unleash the monster that is ‘Ready 2 Die’. In typical Belgian overlord fashion, Eptic combines snappy vocal samples with his robotic synths and gut-wrenching bass to create one of the most forward-thinking riddim tracks of the year. Captivating your attention with an intricate introduction and keeping it with his forward-thinking approach is what Eptic does best, and ‘Ready 2 Die’ will have you hooked for its entirety.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/544927695″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

While 2017 saw IVORY make a name for himself in the bass scene, this year saw him establish himself as one of the greats. His Next Level EP lives up to its name, offering next level sound design and supernatural bass. It’s no surprise that his contribution to Vol. 6, ‘Unbreakable’, stands out among the best, as he continues to elevate his wicked engineering with every release. In his latest, IVORY introduces middle-eastern chants with a desert-like soundscape to create a dance-ready torrent. Don’t be fooled by the splendor, though, as the gap between beauty and bass is quickly met with a loud, cawing lead matched with heavy-hitting percussion to create a headbang-ready heater.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/544943160″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Who knows exactly what prompted Space Laces to become the Santa Claus of bass this year, but whoever/whatever triggered it deserves all the thanks in the world. Gifting his die-hard fans with more releases this year than the last 5 years combined, Space Laces has been on an absolute tear with his latest work. When his collaboration with Topi wasn’t included in the Vaultage 001 mix, speculation began as to whether it would ever see the light of day, before being included in the Vol. 6 mix and giving bass enthusiasts a new hope. To the pleasure of all, ‘Whiplash’ has made its way into the newest compilation, offering more insight into the mind of two musical geniuses. A picturesque introduction depicts a group of friends cruising down a highway (no pun intended) before a hasty rise in tension predicts an unfortunate event. An abrupt crash of monstrous sounds injures all, with meticulous sound design and a fury of bass causing additional damage. Elevating the glitchy take on dubstep throughout, the track continues to jerk the passengers, offering no escape from the ‘Whiplash’.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/544425036″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Thoroughly listening to a track from international bass aficionado SPAG HEDDY is nostalgic to strolling the streets of Little Italy. Whimsical accordion medleys blend an unmistakable influence of the Sicilian variety into the savory, high-energy buildup of the track which contrasts roaring synth jabs and a commanding vocal sample. As the frenzy grows in intensity, a squealing mixdown launches the track into rampant waves of unyielding bass. Despite an overwhelming extravagance of resonating frequencies, ‘Troupe’ flows coherently as a tribute to SPAG’s coveted tight percussion and expertise in sound design.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/543928110″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Utilizing heartfelt synth melodies and mesmerizing bass sequences, KRIMER constructs an immeasurable amount of emotional depth and suspense in the buildup of ‘Facebreaker’. As the riser reaches its climax, an assault of rigorous drums steers the track in a new direction, unleashing a meaty vocal sample which catapults the track into a volcano of erupting bass. Just as the billowing smoke begins to clear, a sample from Dr. Dre’s ‘Nuthin But a G Thang’ comes straight out of left field, heaving you right back into the licking flames of the inferno.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/544956306″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

A warm welcome and congratulations to TYNAN for making his debut on this year’s Never Say Die compilation — it’s been a real treat watching his style grow and develop in the previous 4 years and he truly deserves all the respect in the world for his hard work and talent!

The tune begins like the rebooting of a spaceship, captained by an otherworldly beast, which mutters a fierce growl as a repetitive snare drum kicks the vessel into orbit. As the ship begins to reach peak altitude a fatal software malfunction causes the navigation system to sputter uncontrollably, rerouting course directly into an oncoming fleet of bass-clad asteroids. Although the pilot appears to be coherent, he cackles menacingly as a meteor narrowly scathes the right wing, almost as if he had planned this treachery all along. Despite a more foundational trap style, ‘Usurper’ is sheathed in bass and lacks not an ounce in production.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/543501783″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Christopher Columbus of dubstep, Zomboy is an undisputed pioneer of sound design within the bass realm, with a foundation in production, laid nearly 10 years ago, his riveting style of thundering percussion breakdowns and relentless synth arrangements furnish a template for dubstep tracks still to this date. However, it is an insatiable hunger for progress which sets Zomboy apart from the masses, unveiling with each release an unbridled desire to expand his timeless infrastructure even further.

Flaunting his production expertise right out of the gate, ‘Hide N’ Seek’ opens with a complex digital introduction, coaxing you within earshot of the sensational trademark melody of wailing, harmonious synths. An exceptionally placed break leads seamlessly into an onslaught of drums, unleashing a captivating wave of rapid synths, which build teeming anticipation in the track. A vocal sample delivers the fatal blow, exposing a breach in the walls through which an assault of bass lays siege, demanding immediate surrender with no promise of survival.

Year after year, the growing anticipation is almost too much to bear — beckoning the question, how can the sheer volume and audacity of the previous year possibly be topped? However, expectation and reality flow in perfect synchronicity with Never Say Die; and Volume 6 carries with it an insurmountable quantity of bass, delicately crafted sound design & meticulous production worthy of all praise.
