Diving into the sea of rhythm and frequency, lies a shining label which has been growing and growing. Pushing the underground scene into the spotlight and honoring music as a whole. Yes ladies and gentlemen, we’re talking about Quality Goods Records. And to kick off 2021 the right way, they officially released their brand new compilation of treats called the QGRC–005. Now if you’ve ever heard any of their compilations, then you’ll know you’re in for a wild ride. Curated by the legend UZ himself, each musician was picked very carefully to showcase some of the best up and comers within trap music. And boy do we have some major heat on the horizon. Chosen to be apart of this everlasting mix of prodigy’s are artists such as Abimanyu, anti., msft, RUNNIT, XTALS, sebjin and many more. These souls have proven over the years how much they care about this scene and music in general. Making hit after hit, they’re continuing to shake the ground with their impressive production flow. So prepare for some of the best music you’ll hear this year.

QGRC–005 is yet again, another major masterpiece. Each song is just as rewarding as the last when listening. Hearing sounds you never thought were possible. Always being unpredictable at what you’re going to experience next. The musicians truly went all out and showcased their talent to the highest. Telling us it’s only the beginning for them. From delicate melodies, to hard hitting sound design, there’s something for every electronic music lover. No matter where you are, you’ll have this album on repeat for many years to come. Ten tracks of pure harmony and inspiration. And nothing but good energy to hype you up.

Quality Goods Records have always been a major staple within the music scene, and they continue to push their artists to unknown territories, and lending them a helping hand for what’s next. They’re a family like no other. So go support all of these incredible musicians by streaming the QGRC–005 Compilation everywhere.

North Carolina native, XTALS, has been an absolute storm lately. During this lockdown, he’s played a set during Can’t Be Cancelled Festival which had names like Cozway, Capshun, and Dabow on the lineup, has gotten his tracks recognized by Boombox Cartel and Quix, and has been hard at work producing what may be some of his craziest tracks yet. Staying true to his experimental style, XTALS has geared up for his new release and is made sure to come strapped with a pair of blazing hot ‘Loaded 9’s.

‘Loaded 9’ begins with break type drums and a dark, foreboding atmosphere that instantly energizes the listener, but XTALS quickly switches up the vibe for a largely ethereal, outer space-like emptiness. You can feel yourself being pulled by a black hole and as you reach the event horizon you’re shot into a dimension of swirling textures that end up mixing like fluids. ‘Loaded 9’ may be some of XTALS most insane sound design yet, featuring absolutely grimy leads, thumping drums, and mesmerizing ambiance, this track is currently a front-runner for the definition of wonky when you look it up in the dictionary. Well done, XTALS.

Be sure to listen to ‘Loaded 9’ below and grab the free download here.

North Carolina based producers, XTALS and OUZA, have teamed up for an absolutely massive track, truly flexing both of their sounds together effortlessly. Titled ‘Dissociate,’ this collaboration will send listeners to a world of dark and wavy sounds.

‘Dissociate’ starts with staggered plucks and a rich, deep atmosphere that gives a feeling of uncertainty. The feeling builds until the track crashes into a thick, wonky lead that holds the signature XTALS weight to it. During the breakdown, XTALS and OUZA throw in an extremely energetic electro build that switches into a heavy, gritty final drop that swirls around in your head. XTALS and OUZA have absolutely outdone themselves on this collaboration, and we hope to see more from these two in 2020.

XTALS has been one of our favorite artists to watch this past year. 2019 has been absolutely insane for the North Carolina based producer, as he’s been pumping out heavy hitting tracks non-stop. XTALS’ unique style of experimental bass music has given him the opportunity to release with Saturate Records, Presently Lifted, and Below the Surface, to name a few. Fresh off of opening for Sfam and ATLiens, we had a chance to sit down with XTALS and for an interview and a mind-blowing guest mix. Stocked full of IDs, originals, and fire edits, XTALS seriously flexes on this mix and gives us some insight on his production on the interview.

How did the name XTALS come about when it’s pronounced crystals?

I went to school for Geology, and while I was in the program I was in between names for my music project. In my mineralogy class my professor always abbreviated the word crystals as XTALS. One day while I was taking notes it hit me that it would be a cool name to use, and after thinking about it for a few months it just felt natural to go by that. It’s been a lot of fun to combine my love for rocks into the visual and sonic signatures of the project.

You have some insane sound design going on in your tracks, what are some of your go to plugins?

Lately I’ve really been digging using the synth Spire to get my bass sounds; I’ve found a couple cool tricks in there that I really like. I also just do a lot of trial and error resampling and post-processing until things sound cool. A couple of my favorites for this have been Decimort, Hematohm, and Disperser. The first of those is just a really nice bit crusher, the second is a frequency shifter by Ohm Force that just sounds insane, and Disperser is this weird all pass filter by Kilo Hearts that makes everything sound very watery. I also really like a lot of the plugins in the Voxengo suite for my mixing and mastering.

For whatever reason the word ethereal always sticks out to me when I think about my tracks.

You have a really experimental signature sound, how would you describe your tracks?

For whatever reason the word ethereal always sticks out to me when I think about my tracks. I’ve always tried to create moments of space within my songs, especially in the buildup and breakdown sections in order to juxtapose the drops and make them an immersive experience.

How do you find your inspiration for tracks?

I feel like my immediate sources of inspiration are constantly changing but overall I’m inspired by life experiences, my peers, and other great music that I hear. I’ve always been inspired by grunge music and bands such as The Smashing Pumpkins, Queens of the Stone Age, and Soundgarden; a lot of bands then wrote songs that had some incredibly delicate sections and would go into very loud and abrasive sections. I always have appreciated having those two extremes in one song and I really enjoy trying to adopt that into a more electronic environment while making it danceable and club friendly. I get a lot of inspiration from my friends that make music as well, being involved with Partica Artist Group has helped me improve so much as an artist. It’s great to have a community of like minded artists that I can always go to for feedback and just talking about our ideas of music in general.

What are some hobbies of yours outside of producing?

I grew up in a small mountain town so I really enjoy getting outside and going on hikes when I have the chance. Recently, I’ve gotten back into playing the guitar more and that’s been a lot of fun for me. Aside from that I occasionally play some video games with my friends when I get the chance. I’d say for the most part my other hobbies just revolve around music and music related activities.

I feel like myself and my peers are in a great stage of growth at this time and things are really exciting because of the potential we all have.

What are some moves for XTALS in 2020?

I have a lot of collabs with some great artists that I’m stoked about working on and getting out there. I feel like myself and my peers are in a great stage of growth at this time and things are really exciting because of the potential we all have. The focus for me now is just to write and release as much music as possible and continue to push my sound forward.

What is your go to snack when you work?

My favorite snack is making homemade popcorn on the stovetop, and most of the time I sprinkle some Old Bay on that bish (but no snacks in the stu). I’ve also making unsweet iced tea at home and drink that pretty much 24/7.

‘HOLO’ begins with a hypnotizing chime and an ethereal soundscape that evokes a wondrous, dreamlike sense of emotion. XTALS builds up tension with a change in atmosphere and unleashes a glitchy, syncopated, emotionally charged drop that sends shivers down your spine. ‘HOLO’ is a beautifully crafted track that really flexes XTALS talents and innovativeness. We’re excited to see what else XTALS has up his sleeves to surprise us with, but for now, listen to ‘HOLO’ below.

Have you ever wondered what it might sound like if 9 of SoundCloud’s hottest underground producers got together on one song? Well today is your lucky day, because we get the answer with the release of ‘Mug Club V1’. The mega collab see Runnit connecting with XTALS, Klavay, bd hbt, gurf, DHITTO, ZCR, XAVIER, and RAFTYR for an absolute banger. So how does a collaboration of this proportion come together? “We have a tight community around Partica and like to share samples a ton; everybody was starting to collab with each other, new members with old ones and I decided to attempt one huge collab to bring together everyone that’s helped me and Partica grow in the past year. Originally it was going to be called ‘Apex,’ and I just thought, how can I combine the idea of sample challenges and collabing together in the easiest way without going down a rabbit hole of organizing all these people into one project? So we set the challenge up that everyone sent me stems to an idea at 136bpm and E minor,” Runnit explains.

The song’s title takes inspiration from Runnit’s name, which comes from the idea of running up on someone and mugging their ears. He further elaborates saying, “Mug Club is just my team rising together and the name is a reminder that no one will build your passion up for you, gotta go out and get it.” The track takes collaboration to new heights with each artist adding something special to the track.“Raftyr, Klavay & Dhitto’s stems helped enormously with the chord progression and melodic stuff in the intro and end-bar melody. Gurf, XTALS, & Xavier’s stems I used a ton of their basses for resampling. ZCR & Bd Hbt’s stems I used a decent amount of their percusssion/FX hits in the build and 2nd drop,” Runnit tells us about the production process. From there, Runnit acted as a mad scientist, resampling, structuring and stitching the track into its final form.

The hard work clearly pays off in ‘Mug Club V1.’ It’s a certified slapper with alluring melodies, hard hip-hop samples, brain-bending sound design and bass, and enough variety to keep you on the edge of your seat throughout. Check out the mega collab below and grab the free download. Be sure to look out for more installments of the Mug Club series in the future.

North Carolina based producer XTALS (pronounced crystals) has been making waves in the underground scene for a couple years with his unique style of atonal experimental bass music. With releases on labels like Nectar Collective, Below The Surface, Crown Collective and More Creativity Records, he’s proven his talents with each track. Coming in fresh off the release of ‘FLORA,’ XTALS isn’t slowing down with his new track, ‘FLUX.’

“I started FLUX with the heavily pitched vocal sample that you hear in the melodic sections. I spent some time experimenting with that acapella and that ended up sparking the rest of the tune,” XTALS explains. XTALS brings an ethereal mood to many of his tracks but while crafting ‘FLUX’, XTALS recalls,“When I started building the elements around the vocal I was inspired to go for an early melodic dubstep vibe which was inspired by artists like PANTyRAiD and DJ Fresh.”

The wavy, fluctuating bass evokes a nostalgia for many, but XTALS quickly manages to make the nostalgia fade away and leave listeners suspended. When the track finally drops, you are hit with a wonky rhythm that is simplistic, but carries so much weight behind it. “For the drop I was really inspired by the idea of minimalism. I touched on it with ‘GAMEBOI COLOR‘ but I wanted to try and take it a bit further with ‘FLUX’ and I feel it made for a really impactful drop,” XTALS tells us.

Keep an eye out for XTALS as he continues to climb the ladder of the underground scene; this producer has big plans in store, saying, “Later this month I will be releasing an unofficial remix that I’m very stoked about! It’s a remix of a song that really got me into the weirder side of electronic music and still influences me to this day.”

Both XTALS and Gurf have been releasing a slew of new tracks over the past months with labels like Crown Collective, Below The Surface, and Partica Artist Group. Their new collaboration showcases each artists’ individual style tremendously, but infuses them to a tenacious level.

‘FLORA’ begins with an ethereal melody over a deep, warm, soothing bass line, until it crashes down and evolves into an XTALS signature; a long riser that builds the intensity of the track, accompanied by a metallic swinging lead. When the track drops, you are greeted with the vocals, “Hi”, and it cascades down into a unique mixture of wonky bass and groovy leads that leave the listener unable to deny the urge to at least swing their fingers. The track travels back to its ethereal roots but quickly adds more texture and returns in even greater force. ‘FLORA’ twists into this jungle of outer space-like sounds that retains a similar swing from the first drop, but one that fills more space with sounds from an alien transmission.

Both producers are set to have a prime year ahead of them, with many more upcoming releases, let’s hope for another collaboration before 2019 is over.
