Bootleg Business is back for its fourth installment and this time I have the pleasure to be joined by one who can be considered as the face of the dubstep scene on YouTube. Connor, widely known as Nawtystep, has been nurturing the scene with reviews, reactions, and insight since 2017, becoming a praised and respected voice in the contemporary dubstep scene on a platform like YouTube that otherwise has always been dominated by strictly music promotional channels. I first ran into his channel thanks to his interview with the creator of the ‘All My Homies Hates Skrillex’ documentary and since then, even if I can’t call myself a dubstep fan, I highly appreciate his dedication as a curator and his being vocal about music and culture on Twitter. In full Nawtystep fashion, his Bootleg Business selection showcases a knowledge of dubstep and bass gems stretching back to 2010. To match such a crafted list, I put my memory to the test and dusted off some true classics.

White Rabbit (Lets Be Friends Remix)

I gave this 2nd spot in my Bass remixes of the 2010s when I made that list a few years ago, bettered only by Knife Party’s remix of ‘Last Time.’ Jonny (now on his own as Joyryde of course) and Oren did an insane job here of retaining the character of the original whilst refashioning it with all the vintage LBF energy they could muster. The vocal play across the track is captivating. This is pretty much as exciting as Bass music gets for me, and frankly, all 5 of my picks could’ve been LBF edits.

Du Hast (JAWNS Version)

This month I kick off my selection with something fresh off the press. Published just a few days ago, JAWNS’s version of Ramstein’s iconic classic ‘Du Hast’ is set to cause some giants mosh pits on dancefloors, no doubt. If you’re at a show and you hear this one coming up, prepare your elbows cause it will be mayhem. I’m not gonna lie, this JAWNS-going-metal trend is starting to get me.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/1546363474″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Skrillex – Bangarang (Kredo Bootleg)

It still saddens me the extent to which Kredo was slept on, and went under the radar. This bouncy, boisterous rendition of Skrillex’s classic original is a mile and away the best take on it I’ve ever heard – and I came across quite a few! The funky movement of this track is crazily infectious pretty much from start to finish. The only point it lets up is for a sombre midsection that expertly puts the fun into perspective. It’s Kredo in full flow.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/69725462″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

FLUX PAVILION – BASS CANNON (LUCA LUSH LIFT)

This track has been sitting on my PC for the past 6 years. It’s probably my favorite Luca Lush edit and a steady presence in my mixes and DJ sets. Do you want to blow some minds? Just play this tune and the job is done. I love how he managed to make a more evil and mental version of the Flux Pavillion classic. This is how I imagine an alien invasion would sound.
– AA

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/324144358″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Maka & Waeck ft. Farisha – Breathe (Vexare Remix)

I think the oldest track from my selection, reflected a little in the dated feel of the production. However, that exact thing is what gives this track character – that feeling of being of its time, giving it added authenticity. It also oozes with nostalgia factor for me as one of the very first electronic remixes I fell in love with. The heart-aching vocal, the melodic twists in the drops, the processed robotic YOIs. Still raw and still sensational 12 years on.
– N

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/12216910″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

SATiSFACTiON (YOOKiE EDiT)

YOOKiE has certainly delivered craziest tunes than this one, but I’m simply obsessed with this edit of ‘Satisfaction’. The first time I listened to it I found it just hilarious but as soon as I gave it a try on a proper sound system I had to change my mind! Simple but super effective. This is bootleg business at its finest.
– AA

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/814963336″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Growin’ Up In The Gutter (Kill The Noise Remix)

Another remix that holds a special place in my heart. I remember showing this to a school friend – one of the only other people in my year remotely interested in bass music – and just watching his jaw drop when the unforgiving KTN Dubstep bulldozed through. The menace of Yelawolf’s vocal matches the heaviness perfectly across drops and builds. There’s a constant feeling here of something simmering, lurking below, ready to wreak havoc – which is what Dubstep is all about.
– N

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/31534450″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Herobust – Dirty Work (Cherney Remix)

The original is still one of the filthiest and most cracked tunes I’ve ever heard. Period. For some reason, Cherney decided to feed its madness by making it bigger and louder. I’ve never been a dedicated dubstep guy but I’ve always been fascinated by the megalomania of this remix. Some days I love it, some days I hate it. I only wish I had a video of my first reaction when I found it by surfing SoundCloud.
– AA

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/301714752″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Tisoki & Oliverse – Spongebob VIP

Only The Frim’s Doot Camp has ever come close to rivaling this VIP in terms of sheer, unbridled, cartoonish fun. I can’t even begin to imagine how much fun Tisoki and Oliverse must’ve had putting this one together. I genuinely had to check my phone hadn’t malfunctioned when I was listening to it for the first time, such is the uncontrollable and whacky nature of the vocal delivery. So colourful, weird, and cooky. We need more bass music that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
– N

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/251052481″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

graves & Coolights – Say Things (Crankdat Re-Crank)

I’m pretty sure Nawtystep will agree with me when I say that Crankdat is one of the best in the bootleg business. His “Re-Crank” brand has gained a devoted following over the years thanks to a constant flow of top-notch edits. With almost two million plays on SoundCloud alone, Crankdat’s version of ‘Say Things’ needs no introduction. A timeless classic that always hits like the first time.

‘Spiders’ is a beast of a banger and showcases some of the raw talent that each group has with the heaviest of bass, but don’t get me wrong- this is not just a demonstration of what your speakers can handle. ‘Spiders’ contains carefully measured doses of chest-rattling treble and the soft caresses of operatics, delivered at staggered paced. Each build up stirs emotion with classic BTSM theatrics including a subtle but ever present heart beat, hair-raising synth swells, and overall air of melancholic, future anarchy. ‘Spiders’ stays nasty with a very gooey, YOOKiE center at the bottom of the big drops, leaving plenty of juice to grip the rail and head-bang to.

Check out this stunner, head-banger below.

The vanguard of auspicious producers is as well-equipped and brimming with talent as ever before. Justly located at the forefront of this bass crusade, YOOKiE and HEKLER have thoroughly distinguished their sounds from the masses through rigid innovation, complex sound design and a sonic profile that could startle a mountain.

Seas of casualties lie in wake of this conquest, as past behemoths such as ‘MF Thang’ and ‘Ultimate’ have single-handedly decimated entire crowds of victims in live sets and a collaborative Never Say Die debut seems to be the most ideal scenario in which these two styles could coalesce. It goes without saying that ‘Wraith’ is destined to be a lethal gauntlet of bass, narrowly suitable for the faint-hearted.

A piercing riser melds effortlessly into a rigorous medley of synths, which waver delicately amid storming surges of horns. A metallic, echoing drumroll reveal a subtle synth intricacy in the melody, which hastens in pace as a long-winded build kicks into motion. A riveting snare pattern possesses the track before suddenly, the echoing rhythm of drums return, bringing the build to its final crescendo before a startling vocal sample unleashes incisive, oscillating bass frequencies amid catastrophic sub fills.

Riddled with complexity, YOOKiE & HEKLER tuck excruciating levels of bass through every twist and turn of ‘Wraith’, while resourceful sound design and a veteran ear for production keep the beast within its cage.

Black Tiger Sex Machine is back with another venomous collaboration with YOOKiE, ‘Snakes’.

With plenty of spine-tingling drops ‘Snakes’ has already ravaged the main stage of Lost Lands, and is sure to rattle your roommates with its churning wubs and dubs. This reminds me a lot of BTSM’s last collab with YOOKiE, ‘Lions’, although it has a certain bite.

There is no hesitation before we set foot into the murk of bass, jagged snares, and heavy hitting tempo. These are all the signs of both of these artists classic, hard electro and dubstep influences. It’s easy to relish in the style and depth of mixing that brings out the power and aggression. This track is sure to have you vibing with animalistic dance moves and banging your head to the bass.

‘Snakes’ definitely has fans excited about BTSM’s Part II Ceremony Tour, as it slithers through sections of dark electro vibes, and plunges from each scalding drop.

You never know what you’re going to get when frequent collaborators come together on a track. One should always listen to a joint project with an open-mind, because that’s often when artists step out of their comfort zone to deliver something new and unique. Countless producers have preached how working in the studio with someone else completely changes their way of approaching a track, and this fresh take is on full display in YOOKiE and Jameston Thieves’ newest collaboration titled ‘Pop Rocks’.

Having collaborated on a few tracks in the past, the chemistry between the artists shines in the genre-defying ‘Pop Rocks’. Both YOOKiE and Jameston Thieves have stepped out of their comfort zone to deliver an eccentric heater riddled with gritty synths and unmatched energy. Jameston Thieves described this track best, stating it’s “a paradox of vibes, where the song is rather dark feeling, but the lyrics are more or less a bit whimsical.”

This is part 2 of a 2-part interview with YOOKiE; check here for Part 1 of the overall interview.

Last time, we shared some of our conversation featuring Anthony and Christopher Alfaro, who make up YOOKiE. The duo has imparted some insight on how they feel about food, their plans for next year (which consist of a tour on the moon, and being the first DJs to play in all 50 states simultaneously), as well as their musical journey since they started producing, almost 6 years ago.

This segment of the interview focuses more on their personal interests – we asked them some questions to see where their tastes lie, both in the form of ‘Do You FUX With’, plus a round of ‘Emojis’. Scroll below, and see how they reacted to each.

Do You FUX With:

Riverdale
Anthony: …what the hell is that?
Chris: I think about Waka Flocka when I hear Riverdale… I don’t know what it is, so I guess I don’t FUX with it. Cuz I don’t know.
Anthony: I just don’t know if I FUX with it. I MIGHT FUX with it if I knew about it…
Chris: …but at this moment in time, we don’t FUX with it.
Anthony: We currently do not FUX with it. But not by choice – it’s ‘cuz we just… don’t.

Country Music
C: I FUX with country music.
A: Oh hell yeah, I FUX with it. Super catchy- I FUX with bluegrass, some folk shit… some really good spoken shit. I FUX with it.

Anchovies
A: I don’t think I’ve ever had them, so I don’t think I FUX with it.
C: I don’t FUX with it.
Anchovies are actually a nut.
A: Really?
No.
A: *Laughs* I was gonna say, I’m pretty sure it’s fish!
C: My mind was almost blown – to think that I thought that…
A: I was like “whaaaa…?”

Mans Not Hot:
A: Oh hell yeah!
C: I FUX with Big Shaq. The ting go skrrrr-
A: I thought he was like, a “real” guy! I didn’t know he was a character, as in “fake”.
C: Yeah, Big Shaq is a comedian.
A: Yeah, I didn’t know that. I felt betrayed when I found out. Just like that, he was a fuckin’ character. I was like, “damn”.

If the girls FUX with it… I FUX with it.

Valentine’s Day:
A: *Shrugs* It’s just a holiday made by corporate America, just to make money and stuff, so… I don’t really FUX with it. Do you FUX with it, Chris? I mean, you do get the heart candies come in to the stores and shit.
C: If the girls FUX with it… I FUX with it.

Cryptocurrency:
A: I DO… but I DON’T. Like, I FUX with it, but I don’t, like ACTUALLY FUX with it, you know what I mean?
C: We don’t mess with it, but we FUX with it.
A: We FUX with it. Like, I FUX with the idea.

Lucid Dreaming:
A: MMMM- hell yes! I try to fucking lucid dream all the time, but I can’t perfect actually inducing a lucid dream. But… it’s a life journey. I have this idea for a movie, where the whole world is constantly in a lucid dream. Being in real life is not really the “thing” – everybody’s just sleeping and they’re living in their own fantasy world. And that’s basically the premises… Fuck, did I just say premises? It’s “PREMISE”.
C: It’s “premise”.
A: *laughs* I said “premises!”
C: Get off the premises, fam!
A: Yeah, I should get off the premises – I gotta go, sorry!

Rick & Morty:
C: …Yeah.
A: He FUX with it – I don’t.
C: I dunno, I just played into the hype- when everyone was talking about it, I watched all the episodes in one day.
Favourite episode?
C: I like the one where there’s like, these little creatures inside a machine and they make things bigger. They escape from the machine and then one of them gets eaten by a bird – and that was really funny.
A: I thought Rick & Morty was the same thing as Regular Show. I always got them confused.
C: One of the creators of Rick & Morty voiced Lemongrab on Adventure Time.
A: See? Like, all those shows seem the same to me.

Emojis

How do you feel when you’re playing music?
C:
A: Yeah, I agree with that one.

What’s your bass face look like?
A: For me, when I hear a heavy-ass fuckin’ drop, and it hit, I’m just like…

…
*4-second pause*
…and that’s it.
C: For me, it’s .
A: Ooooh shit.
?
C: . That’s my bass face.

What’s your most used emoji(s)?
C: , or .
A: , and .

What’s one of your most slept on emojis?
A: I feel like people should use a lot more. They should, but I rarely see it.
C: I like the one where it’s like the person shrugging, like .

What emoji has a deep story to tell, and what’s that story?
A: has a story because it’s not a prayer hand – it’s actually a high-five. And the high five is symbolic for the unity of humanity. It’s not just two people going like this *high fives himself* – there’s this whole conspiracy about it. If you guys have time, look it up.

They recently touched down in Toronto at The Opera House for a night of relentless headbanging and mosh pits galore, alongside Cookie Monsta, Subtronics, and Phiso – thanks to Dead Royalty Productions, local bassheads were graced with a night of heavy madness, in anticipation for the upcoming Ever After Music Festival this June.

Their appearance at the festival last year was a heavy highlight that Friday afternoon; they were going as hard as the crowd was, to the point that their faces were covered by their long, flowing hair for a good portion of their set. Unfortunately, they won’t be at the festival this year; despite this, their set at the Opera House outshone last year’s, helping to bring the pre-festival season hype on that cold, snowy evening.

Right before their set, the FUX crew had a chat with them, Anthony going all black and Chris sporting a camo jacket/pink adidas toque, in a small alcove with a quaintly placed fern plant, for a little insight into the minds of the producer/DJ duo.

Throughout the interview, there were moments where one brother would start speaking, only for the other to segue his way in and finish the sentence for him. If anything, this goes to show how like-minded they are – not only in the way they make their music, but in a lot of their mannerisms and way of speech as well – which is likely to happen when you grow up together.

We have a chemistry where we just work together really well. We have similar ideas, and make the perfect team. -Chris

As common as it may seem, it’s not all too prevalent that we get to see siblings work alongside each other in the scene- at least, compared to friends. How do you believe that dynamic changes things for you?

Anthony: I feel like because we’re so close, our minds are connected.
Chris: We have a chemistry where we just work together really well. We have similar ideas, and make the perfect team.
Anthony: Pretty much.

What was your favourite aspect of Ever After last year?

Chris: I really liked the whole festival – the crowd was dope, all the workers were dope – the whole team. The line-up was super fire – it was just a really dope festival.

What can you tell us, particularly those who don’t know, about “The Other Vault“?

Anthony: That’s basically there for remixes that aren’t “clear”, just to put something up there – or maybe, in the future, it’ll be a throwaway account, or just stuff that doesn’t get put on the main one, we’ll put up there, and people can listen to it. We also have The Other Other Vault.
Chris: We have The Vault, and The Other Vault. The Vault has a bunch of really old songs from when we first started producing. Some gems on there if you wanna look it up.

What would you say is your favourite thing about Canada?

Anthony: We haven’t had a chance to really explore…
Chris: …experience Canada. We have a day off here tomorrow, so we should probably explore – and find something that’s our favourite.
Anthony: Yee – I’m down with that.

What’s been on your bucketlist, in that case?

Anthony: I mean, we tried poutine. We like food, so we always try whatever [food] that region is known for – we’ll go and try what the locals are into. But, we weren’t really feeling the poutine, so if you have any dope poutine spots you can reccommend-
Chris: -or just any food that you think we should eat while we’re here.

I would recommend Burrito Boyz.

Anthony: Someone was telling me about Burrito Boyz, that they’re really good. And we FUX with burritos.

Do you guys ever leave reviews on Yelp?

Anthony: Not really, but I was thinking about starting Halal Guys reviews. In New York, we have this place called the Halal guys – it’s a stand – and they’ve taken over everywhere. We just had some here in Toronto! We tried it, and I was thinking that we should just review all the Halal Guys that we try!
(The brothers snicker in unison.)
Chris: We should do a review vlog series, where we just eat random shit and review it.
Anthony: Yeah, that would be dope.

When did you start producing?

Chris: September of 2012 was when were like “Yo, let’s do this”. That summer, we went to our first electronic show, and it was fucking sick! After our first show, we went to a bunch of festivals. We saw Skrillex 4 times that summer. And we were just like “Shit, we wanna do this”…
Anthony: …and we’re doin’ it!

Did you play music or anything in any other ways before that?

Anthony: Yeah, I played guitar, [Chris] played the drums. We used to jam together a lot, so, music has always been a theme between us.

Both ‘Escape’ and your remix of ‘Rail Breaker‘ released around the same time – what can you tell us about each track?

Anthony: With the ‘Rail Breaker’ remix, I was really inspired by that heavily distorted sound. So I was just trying to do something like that, but I [also] wanted to have that “pulse”, for people to headbang to.

And for ‘Escape’: we were in LA and we were workin’ on stuff and I just made that same “pulse”. With the trap part, I wanted to make it sound like… the speaker was blown, so that was where I got that inspiration from.

Current repeat song(s)?

Chris: I’m really into ‘Gummo’ by Tekashi 6ix9ine; I play that track like, every day.
Anthony: For me, I just found the song ‘Imaginary Enemy’ by Circa Survive. It’s a good song.

We’re gonna do a tour on the moon. It’s a work in progress – we’re still working with SpaceX.

In a couple of other interviews, you mention 2019 being a big year for you guys- what do you have envisioned for then?

Anthony: We’re gonna do a tour on the moon. It’s a work in progress – we’re still working with SpaceX.
Chris: We’re also in talks with the National Cloning Association, and we’re gonna be the first DJs to play a show in all 50 states at once – via clones.
Anthony: Yeah – like, that’s some record-breaking shit.
Chris: That’s the year we change everything.

Beginning a new tradition for hardcore bass fans, Kannibalen sneaks this one under the tree just in time for your Christmas rager.

This year’s addition goes just as hard as last year, including tracks from artists that were featured on the first volume, along with some surprises. The eight track playlist is filled to the brim with plummeting drops, serrated synths, and blitzes of fiery bass.

First up on the list is YOOKiE‘s ‘Escape’ and it sets the sinister tone. Their signature growling bass, meaty drops, and virulent rhythmics open up the pit for the rest of the ranks.

Following close behind is Seek N Destroy with ‘Now I’m Here’. A fervor of stunning synths and a charging tempo are blasted with clanging bass, and swirls of raving synth lines. This track packs a punch with thumping rhythms, and salty snares.

Dabin and Apashe team up to craft a remarkable crossbreed, ‘Lillith’ a Sullivan King remix. The track highlight’s Dabin’s git with organic intrumentals, heavy metal’s overarching influence on Kannibalen’s artists’ sound, and Apashe’s ear for cross genres. An impressive and stunning gem of this group that should not be passed over. Sink your teeth into this one but save room since Carbin’s ‘Bad Habit’- his Kanniblen debut-is the tasty dessert to this hybrid with equal parts nasty dubstep and menacing guitar elements.

Another artist that remains elusive, yet leaves his mark- Karluv Klub‘s ‘Cult,’ a filthy contribution to this medley is a brooding, dark-electro experiment, dripping with macabre progressions, jangling build-ups, and convulsing bass. The loose-style production creates space for the mix to feel like a journey through a mad scientist’s lab.

Another artist supporting the tradition is Kedzie teaming up with Superwet on ‘Venom,’ a dramatic scream-o sampling banger. Laced with heavy electric guitar riffs, and super-charged drops this one is super to get you hyped.

Banged up from just one listen, watch your neck during any session with Mantis‘ ‘Moshaholics’. The energy on this one is undeniably dank, and menacing. It fits perfectly as the night-cap to this disturbingly dark delight.

Thank you for making the end of our 2017 bass heavy, Kanniblen. Check out the collection in full below.

Deadbeats has unfurled a vicious collection of flaming hot tracks that push the limits of electronic music and this dimension.

This label has been shredding it up on tour since the beginning of the summer, and they have serious line-ups for the last two shows of the year in Seattle and New York City. Deadbeats have signed some of the darker characters in the bleeding edge of dark electronic music. It makes sense that they would want to showcase some of their dankest artists with a powerful compilation of rib rattling bass, eerie hooks, and seething synths. Here is a taste of what’s part of this spread.

Fresh from their Australian and New Zealand sets, YOOKiE sparks the first match with ‘Intruder Alert’. This track is spacey, taking it’s time to build up, collecting sounds like hapless victims along the way, to a piercing crest of crunchy snares, and bold synths. It’s over before it has even really begun, but is a gruesome demonstration of YOOKiE’s fascination with the sharpest edges of dark electro.

Another surprisingly catchy and brutal laden with ballooning bass is Chuurch’s ‘Purple Ghost’ featuring Bricc Baby. This simple collection of sounds is brought to life with a funky-fresh vibration that is difficult to resist getting down to. The break down highlights the not only the crispy clean sounds, but how they build so well on each other, especially with the elastic, and overarching pure synths in the back.

On the tail end of this Deadbeats medley is LICK’s ‘Push’. By no means a snore, this high energy, and plucky rhythm is coated with sticky distortions, booming bass, and thrilling effects. When the beat breaks, the classic techno nature of the synths are revealed just to be annihilated by the timeless growler bass line, and it is driven hard to the end. It goes down the hatch smooth and smoky. Try this track and the other ten in total below.
