Guest Mix + Interview – Big Chocolate

by Jeremy Stern

From the furthest reaches of the realm of electronically produced music, Cameron Argon emerges to douse us  with a fresh guest mix and even fresher perspective. Known to some as the mastermind behind the one-man death metal project Disfiguring the Goddess and to others as the goofball behind CamEveryDay, we are blessed to take a dive into the world of Big Chocolate. He’s spun at all walks of concerts; from Warped Tour to Wakaan Fest, and everything in between, and he’s put his spin on a wiggle-inducing, bootleg-infused half hour of tunes.

The mix is infectiously danceable, refreshingly groovy, and experimental in all the right ways. Rooted in sturdy rhythms, it takes us on a well crafted expedition through uncharted territories of bass music and beyond. We got the chance to pick Cam’s brain a bit on topics ranging from self care, facial hair, and age-old wisdom from the dextrous producer.

Disconnect for the next half hour and enjoy a farm fresh portion of the Big Chocolate treatment.

Awesome to see you dropping music again & keeping it real on socials. How have you been recently?

Yeah man for sure. Love the times when I feel like contributing to the online pool of the internet when it’s more than just music. Lately since you’ve asked me these questions I feel like I’ve been very quiet! Just moved to Austin Texas, been enjoying myself. Sometimes I feel like when I feel good I just don’t wanna post anything online, sometimes when I feel bad I don’t wanna post anything online either, but ya know how that is. Sometimes I don’t feel like I can properly chime any humor into the online climate at times. Just feels so disconnected on there. I would have more to say to someone who was the most awkward person in the world if they were next to me rather than speaking aimlessly into the internet…at least at times that’s how it feels. But yeah! Feeling great. Feels great getting more music out online too. Been too long, too backed up in my process, which has been totally unhinged in last few years. Got SO much music to unload before 2020 as well. Both Metal and Club. Aside from that, life’s great. Not a complaint.

You kind of need to dedicate yourself 100%. You have to really be about the process… All things in life have balance and an eb and flow into each other.

What advice would you give to anyone looking to improve their focus/mental state? How do you unlock your full potential?

You kind of need to dedicate yourself 100%. You have to really be about the process, from the little things like making ‘to do lists’, keeping your home in order. All the way to the big things like trying to figure out actually how self aware you are of yourself and what’s particularly holding you back. Relish the little victories throughout the day and let that momentum build and build. Also try to educate yourself as much as you can. To the point where any entertainment is really entertainment and you can kind of put it in that box, both time wise and mentally. Entertainment also means checking your phone for tweets or pictures because that’s what you’re doing when you do that. All things in life have balance and an eb and flow into each other. When your dedicated: you’ll save money, treat your body better (eat better, less abuse via food/sleep/substance), make better decisions and have a better life. Takes time. Takes dedication. Doesn’t have to run your life, gotta remind yourself to live often. The balance. Need the balance. Gotta be observant of your needs/wants/feels. Gotta separate emotion sometimes and just get to doing things.

You consume farm fresh products unlike anyone I’ve ever seen. When did you make a change to your diet? What differences have noticed since making the shift?

You know I was STRICT about this when I lived in Nevada, but since I’ve lived in Texas I really haven’t had much farm fresh goodness. Couple grass fed steaks…grass fed ground beef from the supermarket…but still really really reeling in the effects from when I was on that diet. I still will always base the base of my diet on farm fresh whole animal foods because of how it turned my life around when I needed it most. I pretty much just put everything I had into it and everything else kind of just came through while doing this. For any one wondering, I based my core diet off of eliminating anything that wasn’t a season food, and resorted to almost strictly animal foods for about a year. The animals were always local and always fed a natural diet of whatever the animal is intended to eat. Nutrient density. CC Weston A. Price for more info.

Some people might not know your death metal/hardcore background. How does the process for Disfiguring The Goddess production differ from electronic music?

Yes. I am in a one man metal band called Disfiguring The Goddess. Disfiguring The Goddess has many steps in a sense, but to me it’s much more simple. Two guitars, a bass, drums, and vocals. FX/synths are done lastly mostly. It’s a very driven project. Looking forward to FINALLY getting the next album out. Really am. Have much up my sleeve in this department.

What are you most proud of in your time making music?

I think I am most proud of the last two DTG records. Deprive and Black Earth Child. The entire thing makes me happy, the entire process. My teams big and awesome effort to get both those albums out on the same day and just how we made a smash with it. Also really proud of my work with Mitch Lucker. Really proud of some of my live sets. Only thing i’m not very proud of is taking a leave from many aspects of music in 2015. Kind of needed in some ways because now I’ll be back better than ever.

Your facial hair has had quite the transformative journey over the years. What’s the current status? Do you have a favorite look you’ve ever rocked?

Current status is a very trimmed mustache. It’s probably my favorite. Less maintenance, great classic look.

I try and keep it simple in some ways, I try and not spend too much time thinking about what I’m doing or why. I try not to overcook my productions.

Your style(s) of bass music has also been on an interesting voyage. How do you approach exploring your sound & evolving your production style?

I try and keep it simple in some ways, I try and not spend too much time thinking about what I’m doing or why. I try not to overcook my productions. Try to get better naturally over time and repetition, rather than always trying to re-work the same songs. Always inspired by different musical genres which always effects my music. Just enjoy being on the fringe, if not the scenes my own. Sometimes it’s a bit hard to deal with because I’ve had some more drastic changes over the years no doubt. Would like to get more into Trap & DNB.

Don’t get too good, just keep making music, don’t worry too much about getting better, just do it. Mix in mono. NEVER STOP.

What’s something you wish someone had told you before you started producing music?

Don’t get too good, just keep making music, don’t worry too much about getting better, just do it. Mix in mono. NEVER STOP. Never stop is a good one to tell people. Also wear ear plugs when you play or go to shows. Keep a little jug in your car. 13 bucks. Will allow you to be much more comfortable with the loud environments and prolong your fatigue.

What are you most excited about for the rest of 2019?
Getting this new Disfiguring The Goddess album out. We haven’t announced yet, but December is most likely the date we are going with. Got some more Big Chocolate music coming out as well. Another album :)
