Chris Sullivant, cheekily known by his production alias Sully, has had one of the most successful 2019 campaigns amongst rising stars in the bass music community. Thrusting his spine-tingling productions into the forefront of listeners’ minds via their anxiously-awaiting ears, he’s honed his sound to equal parts bone-breaking and booty shaking, an immensely energetic combination. First garnering mass attention via his ‘Frequency Shift’ release 9 months ago, which has recently surpassed 120,000 streams on SoundCloud alone, he had all Wakaan faithfuls standing at attention. With a wildly successful string of subsequent releases, it’s no wonder he’s been invited to perform all around the country. Now, he’s graced the hoards of frequency fiends out there with his debut EP release, the Break The Floor EP, a 7-track tirade of carnage released on Liquid Stranger’s magical Wakaan label.
The title track of the EP, ‘Break the Floor’ starts off this listening experience on quite the high note. Originally released 7 months ago, it amassed roughly 64,000 streams on SoundCloud, boasting earthquake-inducing levels of low-end and a ridiculously trappy switch-up halfway through the drop that will leave you sporting your wildest “O” face. A testament to Sully’s overall prowess in sound design and attention to detail, this is a track that will have you moving and grooving with the best of them.
Next up is ‘Asylum,’ a piece sure to be a one-way ticket straight to its title. The only full collaboration on the EP, with Los Angeles based Fetish, this track is a mid-tempo banger with some of the gnarliest and cleanest sound design I’ve personally heard from the genre. “But I know some things can happen to anyone anywhere” vocals grab your soul firmly and whisk it into the deluge of bass from both drops, firmly implanting the idea that you can get inebriated by miraculous beats at any moment, especially when Sully is around.
Sitting at the 3rd spot on the EP is ‘Apocalypse’, quite possibly the 5th horseman of the end of times. The pre-drop vocals of “Hit em with the click clack” will have you puddled from the shotgun blast of pure ferocity that quickly follows. One of the heaviest tracks included in Break The Floor, this is a piece that will surely turn the temperatures up on all accompanying dance floors, max steaminess guaranteed.
‘Guess Who’s Back’ takes up the 2nd-to-last spot in this collection, a hip-shaking booty-popping shenanigan-inducing thoroughfare if you’ve ever heard one. Eliciting intense amounts of energy out of all within its listening range, this is a prime party-starter and a joy to get down to. This is yet another example of the wide range of styles Sully is capable of making, all with exceptional quality and a tangible underlying style and aesthetic.
The other 3 tracks on the EP are ‘Put It Down,’ a crunchy bass-heavy jawn, ‘Wreck It,’ a DNB laden jump-fest with purring wubs, and ‘Slow It Down,’ a hybrid trap banger that rounds out all the other varying styles included within this body of work. With so many different genres contained within his first extended play, it’s no wonder he’s receiving the type of attention that he is. To have borderline maniacal levels of production in one is good enough for most artists, but to be well-versed in several shows true signs of a master at work.
2019 was an absolutely ludicrous year of growth for Sully, rising from obscurity, to someone supporting major acts all across the country and participating in special occasions like the pre-party at Wakaan Music Festival in October. With tremendous amounts of momentum carrying him into 2020, Sullivant’s swagger will surely not be sullied, with frequent support from some of the biggest names in the industry already firmly notched on his belt. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for what comes next from this fantastic frequency fornicator, but for now check out the entirety of the Break The Floor EP for yourself below!
