Bootleg Business is back for its fourth installment and this time I have the pleasure to be joined by one who can be considered as the face of the dubstep scene on YouTube. Connor, widely known as Nawtystep, has been nurturing the scene with reviews, reactions, and insight since 2017, becoming a praised and respected voice in the contemporary dubstep scene on a platform like YouTube that otherwise has always been dominated by strictly music promotional channels. I first ran into his channel thanks to his interview with the creator of the ‘All My Homies Hates Skrillex’ documentary and since then, even if I can’t call myself a dubstep fan, I highly appreciate his dedication as a curator and his being vocal about music and culture on Twitter. In full Nawtystep fashion, his Bootleg Business selection showcases a knowledge of dubstep and bass gems stretching back to 2010. To match such a crafted list, I put my memory to the test and dusted off some true classics.

White Rabbit (Lets Be Friends Remix)

I gave this 2nd spot in my Bass remixes of the 2010s when I made that list a few years ago, bettered only by Knife Party’s remix of ‘Last Time.’ Jonny (now on his own as Joyryde of course) and Oren did an insane job here of retaining the character of the original whilst refashioning it with all the vintage LBF energy they could muster. The vocal play across the track is captivating. This is pretty much as exciting as Bass music gets for me, and frankly, all 5 of my picks could’ve been LBF edits.

Du Hast (JAWNS Version)

This month I kick off my selection with something fresh off the press. Published just a few days ago, JAWNS’s version of Ramstein’s iconic classic ‘Du Hast’ is set to cause some giants mosh pits on dancefloors, no doubt. If you’re at a show and you hear this one coming up, prepare your elbows cause it will be mayhem. I’m not gonna lie, this JAWNS-going-metal trend is starting to get me.

Skrillex – Bangarang (Kredo Bootleg)

It still saddens me the extent to which Kredo was slept on, and went under the radar. This bouncy, boisterous rendition of Skrillex’s classic original is a mile and away the best take on it I’ve ever heard – and I came across quite a few! The funky movement of this track is crazily infectious pretty much from start to finish. The only point it lets up is for a sombre midsection that expertly puts the fun into perspective. It’s Kredo in full flow.

FLUX PAVILION – BASS CANNON (LUCA LUSH LIFT)

This track has been sitting on my PC for the past 6 years. It’s probably my favorite Luca Lush edit and a steady presence in my mixes and DJ sets. Do you want to blow some minds? Just play this tune and the job is done. I love how he managed to make a more evil and mental version of the Flux Pavillion classic. This is how I imagine an alien invasion would sound.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/324144358″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Maka & Waeck ft. Farisha – Breathe (Vexare Remix)

I think the oldest track from my selection, reflected a little in the dated feel of the production. However, that exact thing is what gives this track character – that feeling of being of its time, giving it added authenticity. It also oozes with nostalgia factor for me as one of the very first electronic remixes I fell in love with. The heart-aching vocal, the melodic twists in the drops, the processed robotic YOIs. Still raw and still sensational 12 years on.
– N

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/12216910″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

SATiSFACTiON (YOOKiE EDiT)

YOOKiE has certainly delivered craziest tunes than this one, but I’m simply obsessed with this edit of ‘Satisfaction’. The first time I listened to it I found it just hilarious but as soon as I gave it a try on a proper sound system I had to change my mind! Simple but super effective. This is bootleg business at its finest.
– AA

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/814963336″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Growin’ Up In The Gutter (Kill The Noise Remix)

Another remix that holds a special place in my heart. I remember showing this to a school friend – one of the only other people in my year remotely interested in bass music – and just watching his jaw drop when the unforgiving KTN Dubstep bulldozed through. The menace of Yelawolf’s vocal matches the heaviness perfectly across drops and builds. There’s a constant feeling here of something simmering, lurking below, ready to wreak havoc – which is what Dubstep is all about.
– N

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/31534450″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Herobust – Dirty Work (Cherney Remix)

The original is still one of the filthiest and most cracked tunes I’ve ever heard. Period. For some reason, Cherney decided to feed its madness by making it bigger and louder. I’ve never been a dedicated dubstep guy but I’ve always been fascinated by the megalomania of this remix. Some days I love it, some days I hate it. I only wish I had a video of my first reaction when I found it by surfing SoundCloud.
– AA

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/301714752″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Tisoki & Oliverse – Spongebob VIP

Only The Frim’s Doot Camp has ever come close to rivaling this VIP in terms of sheer, unbridled, cartoonish fun. I can’t even begin to imagine how much fun Tisoki and Oliverse must’ve had putting this one together. I genuinely had to check my phone hadn’t malfunctioned when I was listening to it for the first time, such is the uncontrollable and whacky nature of the vocal delivery. So colourful, weird, and cooky. We need more bass music that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
– N

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/251052481″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

graves & Coolights – Say Things (Crankdat Re-Crank)

I’m pretty sure Nawtystep will agree with me when I say that Crankdat is one of the best in the bootleg business. His “Re-Crank” brand has gained a devoted following over the years thanks to a constant flow of top-notch edits. With almost two million plays on SoundCloud alone, Crankdat’s version of ‘Say Things’ needs no introduction. A timeless classic that always hits like the first time.

It has been a long time coming, but we can now officially say that Herobust is back. Picking up right where he left off with his last original over 10 months ago, the dirty dub aficionado returns with another catchy vocal sample that will set any main stage on fire. Just as he did so famously with ‘WTF,’ Herobust states, “I found myself playing around with small words and phrases in my studio, figuring out how much of a song I could make out of one small recording. But I still wanted it to be something that people could headbang to. BRUH?! is both of these ideas and it had me in the studio yelling ‘BRUH’ along with it.”

Repetitive distortions of the short-but-sweet word set the stage for the banger that follows, as Herobust quickly kicks the engine into high gear with pounding percussion and his distinct metallic signature. Added repetitions of ‘BRUH?!’ soon lead to another quintessential Herobust heater, sending you into a frenzy of booming bass right as the drop hits. Crisp sound design and raw, unadulterated madness ensue for the entirety of the drop, proving that Herobust has not gotten rusty during his hiatus, but that he has only been evolving as a producer. The second drop is even crazier than the first, so strap in and dive deep into ‘BRUH?!’ below!

Herobust has cemented his status as one of the greats in the bass scene. But it wasn’t a quick or easy path. Hayden spent years making music, refining his skills and constantly experimenting. A mad scientist in the lab carefully creating monster tracks that fuse together elements of rap and bass music. His 2016 EP I’m Aloud was the triumphant sum of years of effort, a masterpiece that pushed the boundaries of trap, dubstep and bass music as a whole. Songs like ‘Skurt Reynolds’ and ‘Dirty Work’ became some of the biggest anthems of the year, destroying stages around the globe. The following year he proved his talents once more with his follow-up Vertebreaker. The project built upon the foundation laid on I’m Aloud and somehow ratcheted things up to new levels. 2018 has seen a slew of singles and Herobust travelling the world and killing festivals from Lollapalooza to Electric Forest. With a new single out, his tour underway and a new EP on the horizon, we had the pleasure of catching up with Herobust to discuss ‘WTF,’ how he continues to innovate, becoming the hero he’s always wanted to be and much more. Check out the interview below.

How has 2018 been treating you so far?
Its been good. Been to China, going to Europe and Australia. Played Lollapalooza Chicago, Bass Canyon, Electric Forest, released some fire; its been a good year for me.

You just dropped a massive new single ‘WTF’. You said you made “almost all the sounds in this song from a recording of me saying WTF.” Can you tell us a little bit about that process? How did the song come together?
I had been playing around with this idea of making a track centered around something I hadn’t heard before. If you listen closely to the drop, the beat of the synths are in the same beat pattern as the phrase, “What the Fuuuuu”. So this was a really fun way of seeing an idea come from such a small, inconsequential place. Literally, a whole track from one statement!

I don’t try to follow trends, and instead follow my own ideas, and use the bass music trends to frame my ideas and sound design.

You’re well respected for your unique sound design and ability to push boundaries in bass music. How do you keep innovating and staying original year after year?
I don’t try to follow trends, and instead follow my own ideas, and use the bass music trends to frame my ideas and sound design. It’s never as easy as it sounds, but in the years that I’ve been making music, I have pushed myself to continue to follow my own ideas. It’s what people find intriguing about my music, and it’s what I personally find exciting about it.

Collaboration is at its peak in electronic music, but you mostly opt to work alone. Is there a reason why you don’t often work with other artists?
I wouldn’t say that there is any real reason for that. I am totally open to do collabs, especially with the bass producers there are out here these days. I would say that I just work very fast on my own and a lot of my tracks just come about without much input from others collaboratively.

What makes you actually want to collaborate with someone?
When they have something unique in their musical style. I like when I hear something that I’m like, “How’d they do that?” Or they really try to push what EDM is as a style. I don’t care if they’re just another EDM producer with just enough differentiation, I want something more than average.

I let the music take me where it’s wanting to go. If that leads me back into trap, I’m open to it.

Your recent releases have leaned harder into the dubstep direction. Is this the direction you’re headed in the near future? Will we get anymore Herobust trap?
I let the music take me where it’s wanting to go. If that leads me back into trap, I’m open to it. But right now, I’m being lead this way, and I like where its going!

You’re gearing up for your fall tour, is there any particular city that you’re looking forward to hitting most?
It’s hard to say that I’m excited for one specific city. I know that’s a little bit of a cop out, but I absolutely love everywhere that I’m playing this fall! I guess I would say Europe is super exciting, cause I’ve only been over once, and it was rowdy AF over there! They love their music!

You’ve had the opportunity to tour the world and perform in so many different places. How well is your music received in countries like Asia and the Middle East as opposed to the United States? Is there a good bass scene among those cultures?
I feel that the US is a big fan of Bass. Against Asia though? We may need to step up our game. My shows in China WENT OFF! Some of them got insanely rowdy. The culture of EDM over there is still pretty new, and this music is so freeing when your partying with it, it’s like the crowd really needs this music, which is something I haven’t felt to that level in a minute.

What do you miss most about being home when you’re on the road?
Consistency. Always consistency. When I’m home, I live in a way that is more predictable but I have much more control over it. I try to keep as much control as I can when I’m traveling, but it can be difficult. Sometimes you just have to focus up and remember why you do this. I’m not complaining about the travel, it’s such a fortunate thing I get to do. It’s just that you need to get into the right mentality to maintain sanity.

It’s going to be insane, very different, fun, something you can headbang to, something that pumps you up, something that makes you want to lift heavy stuff.

You’re dropping a new project entitled Not Your Average EP later this year. Can you tell us a little bit about the EP and what we should expect?
What CAN you expect with something that is anything but average? It’s going to be insane, very different, fun, something you can headbang to, something that pumps you up, something that makes you want to lift heavy stuff. Whatever you may have in your head, could be it, but honestly, it’s going to be so much unexpected stuff, that all you can do is brace yourself!

I think there are so many talented people out there who will never get to be as popular because they haven’t given into some cookie cutter mentality of music. While some people just ride coat tails of trends straight to the mainstage.

If you could change one thing in the music industry what would it be and why?
I would change people’s desire for more of the same. I think there are so many talented people out there who will never get to be as popular because they haven’t given into some cookie cutter mentality of music. While some people just ride coat tails of trends straight to the mainstage. Whenever someone does something truly unique, and gets popular because of it, it is followed by a bunch of trend chasers. While I think that some trends are worth following, the trend shouldn’t be the “IT” factor of YOUR music.

Have you become the hero you always wanted to be?
I’m always working towards being the hero I always wanted to be. If people can get rowdy and be elevated for even a moment because of me, then I think I am succeeding!

In addition to his I’m Aloud and Vertebreaker EPs, the Atlanta-based producer has released a bunch of wicked singles and BUSTED remixes that have truly solidified his position among the best with flawless sound design, raw energy and unparalleled puns.

After a relatively quiet year in terms of releases compared to the two previous years, the bass mastermind emerged from a short hiatus to deliver yet another massive track last Friday titled ‘WTF’. The song begins with an eerie soundscape that could easily be used in any horror film, before Herobust’s distinct vocals lead listeners into total mayhem. Avoiding repetition by including three distinct drops, Herobust combines his trademark drums and mind-bending synths with new, wildly intricate sounds to concoct one of his craziest works to date.

Herobust also celebrated this release with the announcement of a world tour, perfect for bass heads across the globe. Check out the tour dates here and stream WTF below!

Taking place at Bingeman’s campgrounds in Kitchener, ON from June 2nd – 4th, Ever After Music Festival promises to be one of the can’t miss events of the year. The 3-day event will bring together incredible acts, camping, a waterpark, midway rides, games and more. It sounds like a ton a fun but what has us most excited is the incredible line-up featuring bass legends, rappers, trap kingpins, house OGs and a ton of up-and-coming and talent. With so many dope artists on the bill we figured it’s only right that we give you our can’t miss picks. We purposely left off the headliners Bassnectar, Zeds Dead, Excision and French Montana. They’re headlining for a reason, and we don’t have to tell you why you should be at their sets. Check the full list below and let us know who you’re most excited for.

TroyBoi

UK producer TroyBoi has been a favourite at FUXWITHIT for years. Since his early days he’s killing the game with his unique sound known as “My Style” which combines elements of trap, world music, hip hop, R&B, garage and a multitude of other influences. He’s fresh off The Mantra Tour which featured him playing exclusively his own music. His energy on stage and astounding catalog make TroyBoi’s live sets quite unlike any other. One minute you’re entranced by the spiritual beauty of a song, the next you’re in a moshpit turning up to the max. That’s a range of experience that few can pack into DJ set, so don’t miss out.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/183060640″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/267101676″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Herobust

In the past two years Herobust has gone from being another great SoundCloud producer, to one of the most innovative creators in bass music. His style blends hard hitting trap with insane dubstep-inspired sound design. His last two EPs have pushed the boundaries of bass music and his live set is assured to do the same. If you’re looking to have your mind-blown with epic sound design and then get beaten with bass this is where you need to be.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/304475046″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/205295734″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Destructo

HARD founder and all around OG, Destructo, is a can’t miss at any event. With over 20 years in the game his skills behind the decks are no joke. Add to the fact that he’s fresh off the release of his massive G-House EP Renegade, and it’s guaranteed to be amazing. His blend of house and rap does a stellar job bridging the gap for fans of either genre – and you never know what he might rinse out.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/277967757″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/304519202″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Black Tiger Sex Machine (BTSM)

If the name doesn’t at least rouse your interest I’m not sure what will. Their motto is “Music Is Our Religion” and they take it to heart. Each performance is a spiritual experience that seems sacred. With light up helmets and insane visuals the trio’s visual experience is befitting of their sound. Their sets are built around their massive electro originals and reworks but they almost always take time to inject some classics; whether it’s cuts from Dr. Oizo or The Prodigy. If you’re looking to rave it out then BTSM is your jam.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/307819896″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/317357736″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

12th Planet B2B Funtcase B2B Cookie Monsta

Yes, we’re aware this makes the final artist count 10 rather than 8 – but when you have LA’s dubstep/dnb guru 12th Planet coming together with 2 Circus Records artists, Funtcase and Cookie Monsta, you can’t help but make an exception. What do you get when two unstoppable forces collide with an immovable object from both sides? We’re not sure, but this set may help you find such an answer.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/316030299″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/319884754″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/296718566″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

NGHTMRE

Whether it’s insane originals (‘Street, ‘Click Clack’) or banging remixes (‘Lean Back,’ ‘Goosebumps’) NGHTMRE has proven himself to be one of the hottest producers in the game. He’s well known for teasing out insane ID’s in his sets and Ever After should be no different. So if you’re wondering what NGHTMRE may have in store for the remainder of the year, this is a can’t miss.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/285446359″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/311047500″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Zomboy

English DJ/producer Joshua Mellody, better known as Zomboy, is a frequently-mentioned name amongst the bass community. His recent anthem, ‘Like A Bitch’, gets mosh pits started wherever it’s unleashed, and everybody who knows the song knows exactly when to holler and throw down. His tracks may be massive bangers, but they tend to hold some subtle melodious undertones to it, sticking true to Joshua’s surname.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/251330200″ params=”auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/280406256″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Nebbra

The French producer has been steadily pushing the boundaries of future bass. While the bulk of the festival promises earth-shattering bass, Nebbra offers bit of a change. His music is more melodic and heartfelt with just the right bit of knock. Expect Nebbra to take you on an emotional journey while also ensuring that you’re dancing and having a great time.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/290813102″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Last year Herobust released I’m Aloud, a genre-defying and boundary pushing project that I described as “one of the most forward thinking and innovative projects the trap and bass genres have seen in years.” To kick off 2017, Herobust returns with yet another groundbreaking EP in Vertebreaker. The project builds upon the sound he created on I’m Aloud while somehow pushing it so much further. When he first put out the title track, I was impressed but concerned that the EP may not show much growth. It’s an absolute banger but it felt like it could’ve been created alongside his previous EP. When ‘Dirt Heater Tea’ dropped he proved his progression as an artist. From it featuring his vocals more prominently than ever before, to it embodying a near perfect blend of trap, rap, and dubstep. The project’s first two cuts are no joke, but they’re only the beginning. ‘Heavy Meddle’ sees Herobust getting “on his rockstar shit” with electric guitars clashing against abusive sound design for an absolute destroyer of a record. ‘Move Mint’ is an auditory earthquake that’ll leave still in your tracks as your brain tries to comprehend the insanity it’s experiencing.

What may be the project’s greatest standout is ‘Status Busted’. Leveraging a myriad of computer samples, Herobust takes you inside a digital world. It feels like the first experiment of connecting a computer directly into the human brain. After some intense back and forth, calibration and exchange of data an error is encountered. The “status busted” indicates this issue in the connection that drives the test subject’s mind into a downward spiral that is enthralling, terrifying and down right mind-blowing. As if to give your brain a break from all the insanity you’ve been introduced to, the closing track ‘Just Dawn Hue’ mellows things out. It’s an emotional love-inspired future bass medley with just enough punch. All this adds up to a release that proves Herobust truly is at the forefront of bass music.

TL;DR: Herobust’s latest will blow your brain in the best way possible and proves that he continues to expand his talent and creative output with each release. Listen to this right now and grab it via Mad Decent.

Herobust is here to heat up your winter. After kicking the year off with the filthy ‘Vertebreaker,’ he’s back again with another smash. ‘Dirt Heater Tea’ not only sees Herobust behind the boards but also on the mic. Instead of recruiting a rapper or flipping a sample, he’s decided to drop some bars himself. The result is actually on point,…

Instead of recruiting a rapper or flipping a sample, he’s decided to drop some bars himself. The result is actually on point, providing the perfect hype for the tune and even cleverly referencing his previous tracks “You already know I like the way she go to work.” The production combines raw trap influence (peep those gritty horns) with abusive dubstep-inspired sound design. If you love that dirt then this is for you. Stream below and grab the free download.

Looking to kick 2017 off with a similar intensity comes a new single and the announcement of new EP. The title track ‘Vertebreaker’ builds upon on his dirty south meets dubstep sound even further, delivering with industrial sound design and hype vocals. This is that 11/10 turn up shit. You can stream the track below and be sure to grab the free download. For more on what to expect from the EP see Herobust’s statement below.

“People know the BUSTED sound by now. It’s going to be hard. It’s going to be weird, and it’s going to have that dirty south swag. My new EP, Vertebreaker, features all these elements, but it takes the hip-hop aspect to a whole new level. I’m rapping and singing more than ever before. Some songs play like EDM bangers, while others have a straight up rap vibe. I’m so proud of the result and I can’t wait to share these tunes with yall. The single drops on January 4th, 2017 and the full EP release is on February 10th, 2017.” – Herobust (Hayden Kramer)
