If you’re looking to discover your favorite new artist, you’ve come to the right place. Focus Five Volume 76 highlights a producer blending trap and wave expertly, an evolving creator impressing with recent remixes, a Left Field bass magician, and two new aliases from seasoned veterans. Dive in below.

c8o

DC-based producer c8o (pronounced Cato) has been impressing us for months, becoming a regular in our FUXWITHITFRIDAYS segment. With a sound that blurs the boundaries between OG trap and new age wave his music possesses a weight of emotion without ever sacrificing the knock. His latest release ‘TRIPLE7s’ serves as a perfect introduction to his sound. The captivating banger mixes a childlike earworm melody with snapping trap drums, pounding 808s, and mesmerizing wave textures for an addictive and hard-hitting package that you won’t be able to get enough of. If you’re looking for something moodier, ‘alluneed’ and ‘!UNSPOKEN’ are assured to satiate your desires for a darker direction with a wealth of emotion. With under 500 followers on SoundCloud and just over that number of listeners on Spotify, his following comes nowhere near to reflecting his talent, but we expect that to change soon.

From making fun and catchy dubstep pieces to his skills evolving to a whole new level with his recent projects, chosename has always shown pure energy and perseverance in his journey. Creating hypnotic spaces throughout his discography and showcasing what makes his sound stand out. Driven passion combined with intoxicating production has developed his project to evolve throughout the years.

A perfect example is his recent bootleg of KILLMATTER‘s ‘GAIL HARPO.’ Being so spacey and unique already, the artist completely harvested the elements of the original and created a beautiful new vision from his mind. Paying pure respects to the original while integrating his own wonky and elemental sound design. The slower-paced rhythmic structure combined with that electric bass lead shatters your brain in the best ways. Making it an addictive track to listen to wherever you are.

His most recent bootleg of bbno$‘s ‘it boy’ is a real bass-heavy treat. Taking the original vocals and building a whole new state of mind. Using that similar bass lead to really follow the vocals in a trippy and comforting fashion. Really bringing out a balance of sound as he carefully implemented each element to combine with one another to form this hard-hitting and memorable rework. Ready for any dance floor!

huck.jorris

Hailing from Denver, CO, huck.jorris is yet another standout coming from the ever-expanding bass music hotbed. His distinct take on Left Field bass is assured to impress offering a mixture of emotion, grittiness, and hip-hop influence. ‘hazard’ offers an exceptional sample of the producer’s sound. The ominous and epic intro weaves spellbinding images of ancient gods readying for battle. Pitched rap vocals descend into an impeccable onslaught of swampy womps countered by moving synths and snappy percussion. The track blurs the boundaries between filthy and stunning for a captivating listening experience. His remix chops are no joke either, as he takes on FUXWITHIT favourites seeyousoon‘s ‘Shut Up.’ Leaving the raw energy of the original while taking it to another depth of filthy. If gritty bangers aren’t your forte, his Nocturnal Memory EP alongside Supernatural pulls from the natural world taking listeners on a transcendent journey that’s part meditative part bass music mastery. I haven’t been as tapped in on the Left Field Bass sound as of late, but stumbling on huck.jorris offered a timely reminder of how good the sound can be when executed at a high level.

Jukaa

Here’s another long-time-coming Focus Five five pick. In truth, the Jukaa project has only been running for a little over a year, but it had all the credentials to do well right from the start. Real name Jozef van der Veen, before launching his new Jukaa alias the Dutch producer has been releasing music for the past eight years under his previous alter ego Ecepta and as one half of the duo The Outsiders (in tandem with Sorza). Not a bad curriculum to start with. While still playing at events such as Liquicity Festival and High Tea Music’s nights as The Outsiders, in the past year Jukaa paved the foundations of the project by releasing a series of highly successful bootlegs that made some serious waves on SoundCloud and TikTok. Digging on his social media, I found out that discovering clearcast‘s music was what sparked his pop bootleg obsession and “played a huge role in starting Jukaa this way“. This was an apt choice, to say the least. His Taylor Swift and Ice Spice edits currently sit on more than 300k and 200k plays respectively. If you’re into this pop party vibes or a fan of our Bootleg Business column (or both), be sure to check out his ‘i wanna show u off‘ audio/video set. A 30-minute jam perfectly described by a viewer as “a BASS top 50 pop playlist, but it’s a Porter Robinson Secret Sky 2020 DJ set“. If, on the contrary, you are a grumpy purist who only wants to listen to “serious music,” here are a couple of goodies for you: Jukaa has been pretty active as co-producer too, putting his sign on songs like ‘Easy For Them’ (by Rohaan) and ‘Don’t Leave’ (by Tom Frane, RJ Pasin), just to name a few. With his debut EP on the horizon, I’d say we have enough reasons to keep an eye on Jukaa.

kollaba

This is a bit of an odd pick this month, because kollaba is likely not a stranger to many of our readers here. One half of the legendary duo and beatmaker pioneers X&G, kollaba, aka Xian, is already a well-established name. After a phenomenal 8-year run as a duo, Xian and Gaszia parted ways in 2022, with kollaba being Xian’s follow-up solo project.

My lord, what a project kollaba has turned out to be. Xian has really grown into his own sound since going solo and I have nothing but hype for the endeavor. His latest track, ‘FUNCTION FLIP,’ a remix of Justin Martin and Ardalan, is a masterclass in nuanced, grimy beats. The phrasing of this track is so seamlessly blended, not a beat is skipped as the in-your-face sub-bass gives way to a gentle piano outlerlude. Many of kollaba’s recent releases all exhibit a similarly steady rhythm and heartbeat-like tempo that I can only imagine is a love letter to the originators of dub music. His drums have a crunch and crispness to them I can’t even really describe with words, but when you hear it you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.

I’m a little surprised at how little attention kollaba has garnered since X&G’s split, hence the Focus Five pick for this month. Every track is perfectly engineered to drive a crowd wild, so here’s me hoping and praying that this alias blows the hell up. I seriously can’t get enough.

It’s that time of the year again! With summer coming to a close, Sable Valley made sure to end theirs off with a bang. Sable Valley Summer Vol. 3 is the third installment of their series. Highlighting some of the best of the best within the scene while continuing to drive high energy to their audience. And what a stacked lineup they have for us this year! Like each of their compilations, they’ve recruited a few of their alumni while highlighting brand new faces! Artists such as saka, LYNY, Squired and more have all joined the roster in this year’s installment. Creating individual pieces that will easily lift you into the air with pure amounts of heat. Showcasing absolute anthems from each musician while opening a new chapter for the label itself.

Sable Valley Summer Vol. 3 is a burst of static electricity. Running through your body in the form of powerful sound design, unique arrangements, and cinematic visions from each track.

If there’s one duo who’s been able to navigate the dance music scene with graceful and intricate artistry, it’s X&G. The Salt Lake City-based duo has been tastefully making moves throughout the years, landing on esteemed labels including OWSLA, Deadbeats, and Sable Valley, amongst others. X&G continue to be leaders in the space by redefining the bounds of electronic music and showcasing the global talent that has pioneered various electronic music subgenres that influence them. All doing it in such a way that’s palatable and accessible for members of the dance community both old and new.

The twosome made up of Xian (kollaba) and Gaszia metamorphosize what it means to be a beatmaker. Constantly evolving their sound and creating cutting-edge new projects like 2Point, they’ve undoubtedly made an imprint as one of the most innovative artists of our generation. And they were even named on ThisSongIsSick’s list of ’20 Producers Who Don’t Sound Like Anybody Else.’

We had the honor of chatting with X&G about the transformation of their sound, their solo projects, and their go-to local spots, as well as invited them for this week’s FUXWITHIT Guest Mix. While you read more about them, listen through the mix and enjoy the first listen of some of their unreleased music!

Hey! I know your schedules are busy, so I really appreciate you taking the time to talk to us. First and most importantly, how are you doing?

Thanks for being patient with us! We’re both doing good but also we’ve had a rollercoaster of emotions and mental phases especially over the course of the last year and a half. It’s been hard, but also grounding, and also eye-opening. But we’re excited to have things kicking back up and are crossing our fingers they stay that way.

Everyone knows our team at FUXWITHIT loves trap, but it’s always been clear to us that your music has always been on the more “experimental” side. How did it feel to have almost been pigeon-holed as “trap” producers since 2015?

When we first got into music, we were as naive as anyone else entering a new field. We didn’t know that making some hip-hop/trap-influenced stuff would pigeonhole us as exactly that. Lately, we’ve been more on a house/club/breaks kick and just really vibing with that stuff. We also have loads of indie/RnB/funk stuff we’ve been toying around with, too. I think audiences hear certain tracks from artists and associate them with that sound and (for good or bad) artists will tend to stick to that mold cuz it’s what they are known for. They blew up off of one sound, why not do it again right? For us, it’s not always about recycling. It’s about making exactly what we love and just doing what we enjoy. Why do anything else?

It’s about making exactly what we love and just doing what we enjoy. Why do anything else?

Genres are definitely a marketing construct, but if you could name your own genre that really defines the X&G sound, what would you call it?

That’s tough, I like to think of us as “chameleon” producers. When working with others we are pretty good at putting our own sound on the back burner and molding ourselves to the environment we are in. So we tend to be all over the place, but if I were to put us under one sound… maybe just ‘dark’. We have a very dark sound palette that we pull from (Radiohead, Woodkid, Noisia, Boys Noize, etc.) that anything we do, we just make dark. I remember we made a song called ‘Gravity’ that was basically just us thinking, ‘What if we made future bass, but dark?’

You’ve previously described your sound as “cinematic,” which is very apparent with the audio-visual experience we get from just listening to your music. If you could score any film (or even make one of your own), what would it be?

We’ve worked on one film, and were in the process of working on another before Covid hit. But we’d love to do more film and backend production stuff. Making dance music is fun but for us, we’re maximalists when it comes to that stuff. It’s easy to go over the top, but with film your practice going minimal, doing this ‘less is more’ approach and I found it to be a really good exercise for us. But as for scoring a film, would love to do Bladerunner.

With all of that being said, what can listeners expect from this guest mix?

We always like to shake things up, play things we’ve been digging, and throw in little curveballs of music that might not necessarily fit a DJ set but is good for home listening. We like taking our listeners on a journey of sound all over.

We’re super excited for everyone to hear it! You two are doing so much in the scene right now. You even recently started releasing as 2Point. Can you tell us more about the project and how it differs from X&G?

Yeah, so 2Point is a bit more of a honed-in project on club/house/breaks. We both love stuff like jersey club, vogue, global club, UK garage, bassline, etc. just anything with super unique rhythms and lots of energy. We’ve dabbled in some of these sounds with songs like ‘Platinum,’ ‘Get Em,’ ‘Paradise,’ etc. but this project is specifically focusing on that sound. The initial idea came from seeing X&G as an umbrella project, a world of diverse sound. From X&G you can expect anything and everything. From 2Point it will still be the dark sound we do but more honed in on sounds we love. There will be other future projects coming underneath the X&G umbrella that will focus on certain sounds as well but for now, we just wanna push what we are super vibing within the dance music space under 2Point.

We always like to shake things up, play things we’ve been digging, and throw in little curveballs of music that might necessarily fit a DJ set but is good for home listening. We like taking our listeners on a journey of sound all over.

Back in 2017, you told Time Out Shanghai that you don’t release music separately because you might want to save it for X&G. You have another joint project together, but Gaszia has somewhat recently started dropping tracks solo. What’s changed since then?

G: For a long time, both of our focus was just on X&G. It became our baby and we wanted to just nurture that. Over quarantine, we both took some time to ourselves away from X&G and did our own separate thing for a bit. I think we both had been around each other musically for so long it was nice to take a step back and find what we each additionally liked doing. It allowed (at least myself) to find my own identity with music and find what I love personally. At the end of the day, we still push all of our separate demos to the X&G project, but for both of us, just having the ability to just spontaneously release some stuff is a nice feeling. It was what fueled us in the early stages of X&G. I also suffered from imposter syndrome heavily and so doing these self-releases under Gaszia again kinda helped me overcome that. Participating in Baauer’s bop battles over quarantine was a fun challenge that helped push me to just not overthink and just do what feels right. I’m super thankful for that community and what transpired there during quarantine. Shoutout Bopfest & Baauer.

[Editors Note: Xian has also released his first solo single in years under his alias kollaba. Listen to ‘IfYouWant’ now!]

I’m really happy to see your name on huge lineups with artists like Zeds Dead, Rezz, and Tsuruda. Do you have any must-have items on your list that you need either for travel or performing?

Thanks! Yeah, it’s not an item specifically, but just feeling good. We didn’t really take care of our physical health when we first started touring and so as we get older we realize our bodies need to be maintained especially during travel. It’s super taxing taking early flights after playing shows super late on only a few hours of sleep and no food and getting home afterward and needing a day or 2 to recover. Now we are both wanting to be smarter about our choices with that and just take care of ourselves and our wellbeing, both mentally and physically. It’s so crucial for those who travel a lot.

Even with all the travel, you’ve always been proudly ingrained in your local scene. If people are visiting Salt Lake City, what are 3 places people need to visit?

One of our fave places is this spot Ensign Peak. It’s a quick 15-minute hike just above the city but at the top, you can see the entire valley. It’s incredible really. Additionally, check out the Clark Planetarium (free) and People’s Coffee which is a dope local coffee spot run by some friends.

Thank you again! Hope to catch you at one of your sets soon.

Today is a very special day for the Sable Valley family. Taking us back in time, their debut compilation, Sable Valley Summer Vol. 1 changed the way you looked at electronic music. It took every breath out of your body with each given moment. Incredible artists, banging beats, and more. The album skyrocketed not only the label, but its artists as well. So today, they’re initiating stage two in their master plan to push the electronic music scene towards greater territories.

Sable Valley Summer Vol. 2 is a highly impressive and sophisticated crafted body of work. Each track holding their own spirit and vision for this movement. And what better way to increase the journey than by gathering some of the most unique musicians within the scene to participate. Veterans such as RL Grime & Montell2099, Cozway, Rossy, capshun, and others have returned to leave yet another mark of madness on their diverse audience. But we also notice brand new faces! Heavy up and comers CAB, Rohaan, Lizdek and much more have also been chosen to take on the challenge and help build a better tomorrow for the label and their own visions! So strap in those seatbelts, because if you thought you weren’t ready for the first installment, you have another thing coming with this nuclear explosion for evolution.

Just a little over a month after their collaboration with Dog Blood and josh pan, SLC’s finest keep the banger train rolling with their heavy new hybrid track ‘Like It.’

Playing no games, X&G get straight to the point with a heavy-hitting drum line that eventually opens up into an atmospheric wonderland at the 30 second mark. Building us up with some tasty piano and eerie vocals phrasing the song’s title, X&G bring us into a land of inevitable head bobbing and smile inducing beats a minute in. Around the 1:47 mark, X&G switches things up a bit and undeniably keeps us on our toes waiting for more. From there, the halftime drums barge in with a vengeance and knock our socks off before bringing the track back full circle to the original theme. X&G have undeniably done it again, so don’t miss out on this massive track below and grab the free download.

Exposure to an overwhelming concentration of talent both within the realm of electronic music as well as in other styles such as hip-hop, alternative, and jazz has allowed Gooden to take in the various styles, analyzing the intricacies of each, which he has utilized to craft the guise of his musical exploration under the profile Emzhi.

While Gooden himself is a particularly humble personality, his talent in production and his sonic capabilities as an artist shine through in even the short number of releases he totes to-date. Earlier releases such as his standalone original ‘Paranoia’ demonstrate a proclivity for crafting mesmerizing soundscapes with powerful buildups and innovative drops, while his collaboration with fluxxy and Attic Beats ‘On Your Own’ illustrates equivalent proficiency working alongside a vocalist.

The latest from Emzhi expands the boundaries of his creative capability even further, weaving a delicate, emotional introduction into X&G’s ‘Gravity’, which exquisitely accentuates the soft vocal melody and effortlessly launches into a complex drop composed of dark, dangerous waves of bass and playful string fills.

Undeniable creative range and an ability to craft insatiable dark, grimy drops presents a promising future for Emzhi, and we look forward to seeing his style evolve even further in the coming year.

Check out the full interview with Gooden below where he shares some advice on surmounting uncertainty and anxiety in the industry as well as a brief look at what’s ahead for the talented LA-native and be sure to grab the free download of the remix here.

Your bio on SoundCloud reads ‘an introvert making extroverted music’ — expand on this thought a bit further, in what ways has being a more reserved person given you an advantage as a producer?

Since I’m introverted, it’s hard for me to freely express my thoughts because I like to take the time to think about what I want to say or do. For instance, if I’m in a group discussion, I’ll usually spend the time absorbing all of the things being said. After I do that I use that information to help myself formulate an idea that can build on the discussion. I think that this part of my personality relates back to my ability to be patient, which can be a really great asset for a producer to have. The aspect of my music that I like so much is that I take the time to be really detailed and methodical with every step of my production. I find that it allows me to make better music because everything is done with a specific goal in mind. So as far as advantages go, my personality allows me to focus intensely on details because I’m really patient in developing ideas. In regards to the ‘introvert making extroverted music’ phrase, I like to making energetic music because it’s just me channeling my thoughts into my music. I use music as a medium to let things out since my introverted personality makes me want to keep things in. So as a result, my music tends to be really loud and somewhat in your face because it’s me projecting all the things I keep bottled up inside my head.

Growing up in Los Angeles, which is arguably the hotspot for EDM in the United States, how has the thriving environment around you influenced your own path as an artist?

The thing with LA is that even though it’s EDM heavy at the moment, there are a lot of other genres that are really popular in the area. There’s hip hop, r&b, rock, jazz, alternative, etc…. I do my best to listen to a wide array of music because I appreciate the different vibes and feelings that come with all genres of music. The songs that I’ve released so far don’t really reflect that since they’re really EDM heavy. But for this coming year, I want to make an effort to incorporate more non-electronic instruments and elements into my music so it can be more unique. I think the Gravity remix is a step in the right direction since the main musical element in the intro is comprised of a guitar and a Rhodes piano. But as far as my path as an artist goes, my eclectic taste in music stems back to my childhood. My parents always played all kinds of music throughout the house, which shaped my perception of what music was and what it could be. But going to EDM events around LA was what really drove me to want to make bass music, even though I like listening to everything.

How do you compare your debut solo release ‘Paranoia’ and the latest remix for X&G that have a slightly darker, bass-woven influence to the more uplifting, vocal-heavy tracks such as your collaboration with Attic Beats and fluxxy?

My debut release was the first step that I took in order to take my art in a darker direction. These days I consider dark and bass heavy tracks to be more interesting than happy and uplifting tracks. When I first started making EDM I was producing upbeat and vibrant future bass songs like my collaboration with Attic and Fluxxy. It wasn’t until I started listening to artists like Noisia and NERO that my perception of electronic music changed. At that point. I started watching sound design tutorials on YouTube that taught me how to make the synths that Noisia were famous for. I haven’t looked back since.

What aspects of ‘Gravity’ initially inspired you to create your own rendition of the song? Was there a sound or technique that struck you particularly that you hoped to expand upon or preserve within your own remix?

There were three things about the song that caught my attention: the first were the chords in the intro, the second were the vocals, and the third was the sound design. The vocals were what stood out to me because they gave off an airy and mysterious vibe that contrasted well against the saturated/gritty synths and guitar. Before I started the remix, I decided that I wanted the vocals be prominent, and for the remix to be really simple. I made sure to remove a lot of supportive instruments and sound effects that X&G initially had in the song, because I wanted to isolate the main chords, vocals, and guitars. Once I did that, I then focused on highlighting those elements while complimenting them with my own synths and instruments. So the remix was more about preserving elements and making them stand out more, rather than expanding on one element of the song.

If your take of X&G’s ‘Gravity’ were a dish on a menu at a restaurant, what type of cuisine would it be and why?

I think it’d be Italian food. Italians do a really good job of keeping their food really simple, and you can easily pick out the basic spices and ingredients that they use. For instance, if you eat a meatball you’ll say, there’s ground meat, probably oregano, salt, pepper, bread crumbs, eggs, and some mystery ingredient. I just think that their food is no-nonsense and that it gets straight to the point. Even though their cooking is classified by the region of the country, there’s still an overall sense of simplicity and quality in it. I can’t really think of food that tastes dark so that’s my guest guess lol.

With only 3 tracks released thus far, there is a lot yet to be revealed about Emzhi, what do you have in store for 2019 to really allow the project to take shape in the New Year?

As far as planned releases go, I have a collab with my homie D-SAB coming out in February, and I’m currently working on another X&G remix that I’ll release around March/April. Aside from those two, I plan on writing more original tracks and working with vocalists that will help shape the Emzhi project. I also plan on doing more live shows around LA in the summer, and I want to work with graphic artists to create a visual experience that will compliment my music. I just want 2019 to be the year when I solidified the groundwork for what I want this project to be, so I can build on that for the future.

Back in November, X&G announced a remix contest for their Persona album. The contest resulted in a wave of incredible remixes being released and allowed X&G to select their own winners. Today we have the pleasure of premiering one of the second place winners with Toyzz remix of ‘Belong.’ The Spanish producer retains the dark and sinister sound of the original while injecting in an intense uneasy energy. While the anxiousness crept just above the surface on the original, it’s thrown into your face on this rework. The intensity will nearly bowl you over but as you brace for it, it expands. The hard-hitting impact is stretched out and slowed. As the vocals are stretched and distorted it somehow becomes even heavier. As the track breaks, it presents a slight escape. The craziness is paused but it’s still lurking. A hypnotizing guitar riff draws listeners into a bass heavy drop with stellar drum work. From there things continue to evolve within the same soundscape, stripping elements away and adding in new ones to keep it a wild ride throughout. This certainly is a proper homage to X&G: it’s heavy, inventive and unrelenting. Stream it below.

The Dylan Brady assisted ‘Bark,’ kicks things off with ominous undertones, futuristic sound design and of course a few solid dog samples. ‘Blades’ is exactly what you’d expect from an X&G collaboration; dark, dirty and teetering on insane. With Alexander Lewis bringing the brass for ‘Bright,’ it’s an easy standout with an epic air. ‘Lessons’ is a hybrid record that moves between viscous trap, ignorant rap and bouncy G-House (shout out Wax Motif). A fitting conclusion is brought forth on ‘Rush’ with graves. The record packs a grande soundscape with some sinister yet emotional leanings. X is a hard-hitting offering that makes a strong statement. Don’t sleep on JUDGE.

Remixing a track of this magnitude is no easy feat, but Ekali found a few producers that are more than up to the task. The official remix pack features 3 collaborative reworks. Kicking things off is Skrillex and Ronny J’s rendition. This one stays truest to the original, perfectly balancing Denzel’s vocals with some even more intense energy. I didn’t think it was possible, but this remix is even harder and darker than the OG. sober rob & oshi completely flip the vibe with their take. The beat and backdrop is smooth and elegant. It feels like riding though Central Park in a horse drawn carriage on the first snowfall of the season. But that’s just the beat. The aggressive in your face lyrics and delivery from Denzel are still there providing a stark juxtaposition that somehow works so well. Rounding things out comes X&G and josh pan’s flip. As expected it’s the wildest and weirdest of the bunch. What start out tranquil and vibe-laden goes completely off the deep end. One minute they’re hitting you with club inspired vocal chops, the next you’re straight into the jungle with tribal drums beating harder than you heart when you’re standing next to a lion.

In today’s musical climate there is certainly no shortage of incredible producers. It seems every week there’s another artist on SoundCloud wowing us. There’s also more noise and mediocrity than ever. With repost channels and networks taking over, music discovery isn’t quite as easy as it once was. Not to worry, your friends at FUXWITHIT have opted to make it easy for you by rounding up 17 of the best under the radar producers out right now. The selections vary greatly, both in size of following and style, but one thing is consistent throughout: their undeniable talent. This is essentially a list of artists that we feel have been absolutely killing it but still don’t get the shine they deserve. Check the list below (in reverse alphabetical order) and let us know if we missed any of your favourites.

X&G

If you’re looking for music that pushes boundaries and challenges you as a listener, look no further than X&G. The Salt Lake City based duo pretty much define what innovation means in electronic music. Their style definitely isn’t for everyone, but those who can appreciate it are sure to be left astounded. Their latest release Persona is a ten track effort that showcases their diversity and originality. Whether it’s pitting josh pan’s vocals against drops that bend space time on ‘GRAVITY,’ exploring the dark depths of the subconscious on ‘BELONG,’ or transporting listeners around the world on the emotional roller-coaster that is ‘Montage.’

WHIPPED CREAM

Originally from Toronto, but currently holding it down on Canada’s West Coast, WHIPPED CREAM has been impressing us since she was making club bootlegs of Kanye West. Fast forward a few years and she’s become a true innovator in the electronic scene. Her collaborative EP with Hekler broke down the barriers of future and experimental bass music. Oh and if you’re looking to get your brain blown, go ahead and listen to ‘FTP’…if you dare.

Wevor Trill

Bay Area beatmaker, Wevor Trill has been heating up 2017. Kicking the year off with the Kanye sampling ‘yayzer beam,’ his music will “explode your fucking head.” The combination of clever samples, addictive loops, and snapping 808s will take you back to the days of trap’s birth (think Baauer), while his inventive progression and sound design will remind you that the future is now. His simply titled ‘drop’ just hit a million plays on Spotify, so his stock is quickly rising.

Vincent

Formerly XVII, Vincent has seen his greatest progression and releases in 2017. He capped off last year with the incredible single ‘Alpha’ and rode the intense energy throughout the year. ‘Alpha’ and ‘Jinx’ showcase his duality and keen ability to produce beautifully contrasting music. Stunning intros and breaks are juxtaposed against brutal drops with sinister sound design. But it’s not just carefully crafted bangers in his arsenal. This summer he delivered ‘Breathe,’ an emotional anthem that fuses together elements of pop, trap and future bass. With the standout remix for San Holo’s latest release and an afternoon headlining spot at HARD Summer, it won’t be long before Vincent blows up. Not bad for a kid from Winnipeg, Canada.

um..

Even their name is irregular, with lowercase styling and two dots. This off-kilter and IDGAF selection perfectly embodies their music. The experimental bass sounds are some of the wildest and weirdest your brain will ever have the chance to try to make sense off. They’ll sample anything from bird chirps to The Office and make it sound incredible. Their catalogue runs deep, but if you’re looking for a good introduction check out their latest collaborative EP a dogs tale.

thook

Coming from our hometown of Toronto, thook is a producer we hate to admit that we’ve been sleeping on until lately. His sound is as raw as DMX on dust but with an oddly cinematic aesthetic. His basslines are beyond thick and his samples and synths are Wu-Tang Clan (nothing to fuck with). His last three releases ‘8 Zone,’ ‘flight mode pt1’ and ‘Road BOI 7’ are sure to leave you an awe. If you’re tired of the same old trap shit, thook will open you up to a new world.

STFU

NYC duo STFU (Stand Tall Fists Up) first made major waves with their Slow Roast debut So Duh. The title track brought forth a sound that could only be described as space trap. A banging display of ray gun blasts, intergalactic synths, deep bass and pounding percussion. Since then they’ve become one of the most sought-after remixers with official reworks for heavy hitters like A-Trak, Anna Lunoe, Grandtheft, Keys N Krates, TWRK and more. Adding further fuel to the fire, the duo made their Diplo and Friends debut earlier this year, which is pretty much a right of passage for soon to be stars. Topping it all off they just competed in A-Trak’s brand new Beat Battle The Goldie Awards. Yeah, they’re killing it.

Ramzoid

This list is littered with Canadian kids churning out cool tracks on the regular. There may be no more cool or young than Prince Edward Island’s Ramzoid. It seems quite obvious that his upbringing in the “Garden Of The Gulf” has influenced his production style. There’s no shortage of nature-inspired sounds that add to the intensity and crisp, clean quality of his productions. After first making his mark with a “re-do” of What So Not 3 years ago, he’s since gone on to flip the likes of Jack U, Mura Masa, and most recently, Post Malone. He’s also co-founded Soda Island, so don’t be surprised when he bubbles his way to the top of lists like this.

PURGE

The faceless duo made their mark on the industry with their debut EP Feel Your Love. Their dark bass aesthetic mixes elements of future bass with raw trap. The sound is something between Flume meets Mr. Carmack with deep emotional overtones. Their sound continues to evolve and morph with each release; one may be an experimental bass effort, the next a rap influenced banger, and another a slow burning instrumental. What you can expect from everything with their name on it though is quality. With support from NEST HQ and Elysian, don’t be surprised if you see their name popping up on the regular.

Pham

Polish producer Pham’s first big splash came with an out-of-this-world remix of Flapo’s ‘Dear Neighbour,’ and we’ve been following him closely ever since. He’s become well known for crafting soundscapes like no other; carving out a cool, yet creepy space for himself. He’s dabbled in seemingly opposing genres of house and trap, producing potent remixes of Grandtheft’s ‘Easy Go’ and most recently Big Gigantic’s collab with Waka Flocka Flame. While his down-tempo chill vibes fill the room, it’s his drum design that really takes the cake. It’s the kind of clicks, clacks and thumps, that send the whole room into a tizzy. Get emotional and wild all at once with Pham’s unique brand of fire.

NOAHPLAUSE

Toronto’s own Noahplause has been killin’ it since 2015 with tracks like ‘Fire’ and ‘Runnin’. After a quiet 2016 he returned full force this year with a slew of massive tracks (‘Bus It,’ ‘Pull Up’ and ‘Throwing Money’. He can produce across genres from club, to trap and bass house, at times somehow meshing them together within the same tunes. If you’re looking for hard-hitting slappers Noahplause is your dude.

mossy.

Mossy. first graced our radar with an official remix of Lido’s ‘Dye’. The hazy and hypnotic flip wasn’t quite like anything we’ve ever heard. The balance of sheer beauty with just enough bump has come to be mossy.’s calling card. His most recent original ‘glass’ personifies this to perfection. Mesmerizing synths are layered with emotional plucks for a sound that breathes emotion and ozone. mossy.’s music will leave you with a feeling a wonderment that’s seldom experienced.

Masayoshi Iimori

Of all the names on this list, Masayoshi’s may be the most misspelled (it’s a double i), but we believe that’s soon to change. The Japanese master of mayhem continues to craft the most mind-boggling productions. Whether it be a remix of Anna Lunoe, a bootleg of King Kendrick or an original (on Trekkie Trax, or more recently TWONK and Good Enuff), this man is the future. His productions ooze with an inimitable energy a la nightcore or happy hardcore. That energy is only equalled by a bass design that can only be labeled as ballistic. If you’re in need of a new club weapon, look no further that Masayoshi Iimori’s ever growing arsenal.

Jon Casey

South Africa is becoming a hotbed for bass music and one of the country’s brightest stars is Jon Casey. He has made some serious waves with his collaborative project It Hz. and his solo work never disappoints. His Rockerfeller EP is a rugged bass heavy beast. His ability to blend worldly sounds with futuristic sound design is reminiscent of TroyBoi, but he does so all in his own way. Don’t let his straightforward name fool you, his music is anything but.

Holly

Portuguese production powerhouse, Holly just hit the 200 track mark on his SoundCloud, with the release of ‘Bruno Mars’ featuring Woolymammoth. Let that sink in for a second. That means in the 3+ year lifespan of his account, Holly has dropped more than a track a week. But we’re not just talking about pure quantity since there’s no shortage of quality in his, at times queasy, bass tunes. He’s worked with everyone from QUIX to Max Styler and even Masayoshi Iimori on ‘Pump It Up.’ And that’s not the only thing Holly and Masayoshi share. They’re both nearly impossible to categorize. While they are obviously not future bass, they are both future and bass personified. Holly has literally unleashed ‘Hellfire,’ while also showing a more subtle side with the likes of ‘I’m No Better.’ It’s safe to say Holly is one of the hottest commodities on the market, especially after winning The Beat Battle at The Goldies.

Dombresky

French fire-thrower Dombresky is taking things to the next level in 2017. After exploding onto the scene with a tempestuous 3 track EP on Fool’s Gold, he then smashed things up with a sublime remix of fellow Frenchman DJ Snake’s ‘Middle,’ adding an awe inspiring appearance on Record Record’s Filet Mignon 4. He’s upped the ante this year once again flipping DJ Snake, this time taking on ‘Ocho Cinco.’ He’s since found a home for his hard hitting and deliriously deep house track on Tchami’s CONFESSION. His latest output, ‘Hostyl’ with MALAA further showcases how dirty Dombresky can get. And if dirty is what you desire, best find yourself front and centre for the next Dombresky DJ set, as the man mixes it up with the best of em, see his set for The Cookout on SiriusXM.

Bishu

There must be something in the water in eastern Canada, either that or it’s just the Screech. Like Ramzoid, Bishu comes from the coast and brings big time tunes to the mainland. After unleashing his early work on Unborn Records, he’s since made his mark on Mad Decent, culminating in an epic episode of Diplo & Friends. His wild, “wavey” style welcomes twerking, but he’s not just about the booty, he’s got a lot of love in his productions: see his collaborative remix of ‘Alaska’ with Luca Lush or his latest ‘Skin To Skin’ with QUIX.
