Christmas came early this year for listeners following Canadian artist Rezz and American artist Yultron. While Rezz is known for her dark and mystical production style, Yultron brings out another approach of experimental production through menacing bass lines and high tempo instrumentals. Both easily identifiable with their signature sound, Rezz and Yultron are providing the opportunity for their fan base to experience ‘Hell On Earth,’ even if it is just for a few minutes.

With an epic intro filled with a unexpected twists and exhilarating sounds, Rezz and Yultron are preparing listeners for the journey in sight. As the adrenaline begins to rush through your veins, a guitar solo intertwined with shape shifting sounds brings listeners into the dark side of the earth. With these two producers only warming up, Yultron drops slithering snares and cutting edge sounds which flow dangerously with Rezz’s distorted, yet sinister sound. After Rezz played this collaboration in over a month ago at Bumbershoot, it is safe to say this highly anticipated single was definitely worth the wait.

Rezz, or as her fans affectionately call her, “Space Mom,” has been on the cutting edge of EDM’s new take on Electro since her debut 5 years ago. Mau5trap’s brightest pupil by a long shot, Rezz hit the ground running with several out of this world bangers that quickly made her a fan favorite amongst the ravers that had been missing the hard, gritty sounds of that dark, house adjacent dance music that had all but disappeared from the scene in the wake of trap music & future bass.

Since then, her signature style has played a key role in the resurgence of this dark style of headbanging electro-dub with a twist; making room for powerhouses such as Hvdes, BTSM, 1788-L, Blanke, and many, many more.

Needless to say, when we found out her new EP was dropping this week, and in virtual reality, no less, the excitement was palpable. This was actually the first live virtual reality EP release ever. As in never before in the history of mankind, has this ever been done, ever. It was pretty spectacular to be part of that historic moment Tuesday night as Rezz put on a truly tripped out experience that you absolutely must get into when you have the time.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSSvG0j40vM]

As for the music itself, I was very pleased to hear how much our Space Queen had improved since Certain Kind of Magic. With Beyond the Senses she’s has managed to tweak and improve her signature sound to represent several different styles within the main body of work while still sounding quintessentially, “Rezz.”

Although the EP is packed with features, the first track, ‘Dark Age’ is all Rezz, and starts the EP off as it should; firing on all cylinders and showcasing all the things we’ve come to know and love from the raver turned superstar. It’s heavy, its spacey, it’s twisted, it’s dark, it’s dance-y.

Her collaboration with Underoath is also certainly worth mentioning here as well, and might actually be the heaviest track on the EP depending on who you talk to. Every time I see a rock/hardcore group collaborating with an EDM artist I’m always skeptical about things will turn out, but this one was very well executed.

From there, the energy of the EP gets seriously next-level with three absolutely massive collaborations featuring Deathpact, EDDIE, & Sayer, that are going to be knocking fans knew and old into next week, well into their hundredth play-through. ‘Your Soul Will Never Be Released’ & ‘Stress’ are the clear underdog bangers here next to, ‘Kiss of Death’ but are going to be definite favorites within the bass music community.

Finally, this collaboration with The Rigs is a deep emotive ballad centering around smooth, crystal clear vocals, gentle piano, and a dangerously, electrifying bassline. This was probably the biggest surprise for me in the whole EP, both because of how much I liked it, and also because of how much of a departure it was from the rest of the release. Definitely well played.

Beyond the Senses is a fantastic addition to Rezz’s ever expanding catalogue of gritty, hypnotic, space jams; and overall might just be her best EP yet, which is huge considering it’s a solo release.

So go grab a copy and tell your neighbors to shut up, ’cause Space Mom’s done it again.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/playlists/802304763″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”300″ iframe=”true” /]

Canadian sensation Rezz has dropped a remix for The Glitch Mob‘s latest single, which is off their forthcoming album! Rezz and The Glitch Mob are avid fans of one another, so this is a two-way honour for both artists.

The tune sounds like a good, solid blend of both the remixer and original group. Rezz retained quite a bit of the original production, along with Elohim‘s vocals. Like Rezz’s general style, there’s a low, thick & punchy bassline present, particularly in the drops. This goes well with the Glitch Mob’s vibe – in fact, it’s somewhat surprising both of them haven’t gotten together to drop an official collaborative tune as of yet!

Not only has the song been glitched and warped à la Rezz, but the music video has as well. The gentle flows and transitions are now much jerkier and rushed, and the lighting/illumination in certain spots have been altered to suit Rezz’s style. (Think the red-and-white spiral design on her trademark glasses.)

Check out the tune/video below, and be on the lookout for The Glitch Mob’s new album, See Without Eyes, which is said to drop on 4 May.

‘Psycho’ is laced with devious dark-dank bass, lurid sound effects, and stinging synths – a concoction of creepy and confounded charm. This track’s aesthetic seems to be an offshoot of the nostalgic nightmare, down-the-rabbit-hole, hypnotica type of vibe found in REZZ’s previous album Mass Manipulation which fans enjoyed throughout her 2017 tour in North America.

It appears that Isqa has helped REZZ find her way out of a twisted reality but there have been some lasting effects. Fierce bass lines, taunting melodies, and grinding industrial churnings make the perfect back drop for both asylum dialogue and breathy crooning samples.

22-year-old Isabelle Rezazadeh, best known to the world as Rezz, is one of the biggest artists in the electronic scene, and has been making some serious waves over the past while. Every now and again, she likes to stop by and catch a show or two in Toronto, where she’s currently based – and the next day, you can bet that the local community talks about her (known) presence. It’s an even bigger spectacle when she has a show lined up, since she always finds a way to have fun with the hometown crowd, especially with her recent sold-out show at The Danforth Music Hall.

The night started off with knodis, one of the collaborators for her recent album, which the tour is based off of. The general vibe was most suited to Rezz – a dark, industrial-esque techno vibe, best described as “Electric Island gone dark”. The venue was already packed halfway to the back, with a large portion of the crowd sporting some kind of Rezz shirt/apparel. There were also “space people” whose faces were bespeckled with jewellery, and females dressed in black tutus & fluffies, appropriately named “Rezz Girls”, scattered throughout. Overall, the crowd was predominantly dark in attire, to match.

No Mana took over on the decks after, surrounded by visuals of his insignia – a satisifed 8-bit smile with its tongue sticking out. Given his name, the face seemed like a playful mockery towards the worst thing to occur in a video game (aside from death). His set was a heavy, high-energy warm-up, which had the concrete floor of the hall rumbling, especially towards the end when he layed down Huoratron‘s ‘Cryptocracy’.

After a grateful bow from No Mana and a quick intermission, there was an all-too-familiar voice – that of the hypnotist/psychologist from her opening track ‘Relax‘, and Rezz herself appeared before us during the psychologist’s ominous countdown. She sported a detailed Rick & Morty shirt gifted to her by a fan, which she later admitted to changing into right before her set began.

Skipping ahead 10 minutes into her set, she dropped ‘DRUGS!‘, one of her most talked-about songs of the summer. My body wasn’t ready for such a sudden appearance, yet I still shrieked in absolute awe with my friend as we instantly recognized its wonky synths. During the drop, the song and I felt like we were one, as I let loose with frisson-induced goosebumps (and copious amounts of sweat) all over my posessed body. (Mind you, I was completely sober as this was occurring.)

The visuals throughout the show were either very cryptic, or hypnotizing – if there wasn’t some variation of hypnotic spirals going around the giant screen behind her, then there were instances of her famous klingon-inspired hand gesture with the centric eye protruding from it and looking about, as well as hands attempting to push out of the LED screen, both causing the illusion of 3D projection. Meanwhile on stage, she stood as a small figure who swayed, wobbled and waved to the music, like a master of flow.

Regarding crowd interaction, she would do something as simple as clap her hands to any beat, and instead of “that one guy” keeping the beat alive, we ALL put our hands up and joined her in mesmerized rhythmic unison. We’re almost halfway into her set, getting lost in her familiar sounds/tunes, when she picks up the mic and gleefully announces, “Toronto, I sold this place out today!”

We all cheered in utter jubilation, yet didn’t expect the lengthy segment of filthy bass and space music that she unleashed right after. As happy as the die-hard fans were to hear her play song after song that she had produced, the headbangers really came alive during her own track ‘Synesthesia‘, Just a Tune‘s flip of ‘Killing in the Name Of‘, as well as a surprise drop-in of Liquid Stranger & Space Jesus‘ ‘Space Boss’ – all this before turning down the madness via her collab with Laura Brehm, ‘Melancholy‘.

After going all in during the headbanging session, we were all still talking about how surprisingly early she dropped ‘DRUGS!’. As we did so, another fan favourite, ‘Purple Gusher‘, came on to re-capture our attention. Accompanied with fully purple visuals, everybody’s weird side let loose, including my friend who showed me he can bend backwards at an almost-90° angle. Not too soon after, she played its green counterpart, which followed ‘Diluted Brains‘, as the last two tracks off her album that she had left to drop on us.

Her set ended approx. 10 minutes early, but not before closing out with the same hypnotist/psychologist bidding us a cryptic farewell. There was no encore or “one more song” to follow, but we were more than satisfied that the Queen of Darkness (a.k.a. Space Mom) had infiltrated our souls for a full hour and a half. My buddies and I got an Uber back to my place afterwards, and I was low-key welling up with tears, as I tried to comprehend the unreal set I just witnessed and bacame lost in.

If you’ve yet to catch a Rezz show (and start your own personal counter), I highly recommend – no, I IMPLORE you to do so, especially if you’re a fan of her style. This was my first, most defiitely not my last, and I can’t wait to see where else I catch her and how many times I do so.

We’ve followed closely on her trail as she unleashed her concept of Mass Manipulation upon us, while growing her cult following – her debut album is one of the most talked-about this past summer. Her forthcoming comic book tells a tale of landing on Earth, to create a world of peace and love. And now, to fully immerse yourself into the hypnotic hype, she’s going from city to city around the world, infiltrating our minds this fall & winter.

Later this week (7 Oct), she’ll be making a stop at home in Toronto, which people have been talking about for months, over at The Danforth Music Hall. If you haven’t had the pleasure of seeing a Rezz show yet, now’s the perfect opportunity to do so. Give in, relax, and let the deep, dark sounds of Rezz take over your soul. Tickets are still available, but not for much longer.

The plot features Rezz herself as a Neptunian inhabitant, who crash lands on Earth. There, she befriends two Earthlings (as well as an adorable lil’ snek). They soon discover her innate ability of hypnosis through music, as she works to achieve her ultimate goal: universal peace & love across the planet.

She’s creating the comic with Chicago-based illustrator Luis Colindres, who’s worked with Rezz for her Something Wrong Here EP artwork, as well as the Mass Manipulation album cover and tour art. You can pre-order the comic, which will be released as a physical copy late November. There’s only 2000 copies being released though, so get on it before the opportunity floats off into space!

After teasing us over the past month with ‘Relax‘, ‘Diluted Brains‘, ‘Premonition‘ and ‘DRUGS!‘, Mass Manipulation is now fully available via Mau5trap, and each track is an experimental, techno-laced, bass-fueled organism, entrancing anyone who comes across it.

Isabelle Rezazadeh, best known as the Dark Queen Rezz, states that her debut album is meant to be “a commentary on how easily our minds can become manipulated by the things we consume in society.” She invites the listener to become fully submersed and allow each track to infiltrate/take over the mind, in the hopes that “they might see things through a new perspective (perhaps an outer world viewpoint). One where everyone is free from the unrealistic expectations planet Earth has drawn for them. A world of acceptance and hypnosis. @_@”

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/332099267″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

The first four tracks in the album are the very four we were already introduced to, in their respective order (posted above), before entering a realm of four brand-new tracks. Continuing after the hard-hitting ‘DRUGS!’ is ‘Livid’, which you’ll feel becoming slighty more annoyed as it progresses, until it reaches a tipping point, and explodes into its cathartic drop.

Next is ‘Green Gusher’ – for those familiar with ‘Purple Gusher’ from last year’s EP, Something Wrong Here, this is essentially its hyperactive turntablist sibling. There’s striking family resemblances between the two flavours – from the eerie synth melodies, to the brooding buildup, as well as the bassline of each drop, you’ll hear the subtle similarities which hold each separate entity together as a fruity pack. It begs to ask what colour she’s going to manipulate next, should she choose to continue with the series.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/285215658″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/336194427″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

‘Synesthesia’ is a rather peculiar track, since it has more than just an auditory effect – perhaps you can taste the industrial, metallic vibes it emanates, or you can see colours according to the rhythm and harmonies of the song? As subjective as this may be, one thing’s for certain: it’s going to stimulate you in ways you didn’t imagine it could. The final track, ‘Ascension’, is a collab with Kotek, which sports some Justice influences within it. It serves as a conclusive amalgamation of everything experienced right before it, while doubling as a rude awakening from the musical hypnosis.

If the album has a solid hold on you, then you can stream/buy it for your favourite musical platform! Along with its release comes a lineup of dope merchandise, for those who need to solidify their place amongst Rezz’s ever-growing cult following. She’s now on course for a massive Mass Manipulation tour which will take her and the album around the world, into 2018 – see where’s she’s going to be, and get tickets for her upcoming shows here. Wherever you end up seeing her live, rest assured it’s going to be a spectacle you’ll never forget – or maybe, one you’re too engrossed to remember.

Shambhala‘s sold-out 20th anniversary is QUICKLY approaching – by now, most ticketholders have already studied, dissected and conducted field tests on the 2017 schedule. There’s a slew of top-notch artists who will be performing on August 10th-14th, but before we fully praise what has yet to happen, we’re taking a look at some of the highlights of last year, to help further build the upcoming hype. This list is going to include some of the most talked-about and lauded released sets of last year’s bonanza, along with who you can catch for a similar vibe this year.

Please note: this is a small list derived from a MUCH bigger one (the actual lineup); your “mileage” may vary.

Stage: Pagoda
Her debut at last year’s event turned so many heads, and had people raving about it months after the festival. It’s a dark, mysterous and quirky set, and features some stellar IDs which have now been revealed since, including her widely-sought ‘Relax‘, off her upcoming album Mass Manipulation. Speaking of, the album releases days before this year’s event, and you can guarantee that some, if not most of its tracks will be present in her set.

The Pagoda itself (pictured above) is undergoing a makeover this year as well, which amplifies the likelihood that this set is going to be etched into the history books, as well as the hearts of her devoted cult following.

Stage: Village
As the first artist featured in the Shambhala Live video series, London’s drum & bass wizard tore down the Village, going across all fronts of the genre – from the smoothest of liquid d&b, to the heaviest and dirtiest neurofunk, you’ll be rinsing out for an hour and a half straight to this killer set, which you can experience/re-live both audibly and visually.

Special mention goes to the 32-minute mark, where his classic ‘Out The Blue‘ is accompanied by an intense and magical spectacle, thanks to the sheer radiance of the gargantuan disco ball hanging overhead.
The Vancouver-based DJ always knows how to keep his music true to the ethos of the funkiest place on Earth, and returns to Shambhala to lay down some of the grooviest, sexiest funk this world has come to experience. From some booty-bumpin’ disco, to the wubbiest of glitch hop, you’ll feel like you’re on the set of Soul Train, breakin’ it down in ways you didn’t think imaginable.

Nearly every song on the tracklist is an original or remix done by/with K+Lab, and he knows exactly how/where each puzzle piece fits together, to create a musical mosaic that will leave you wanting more.

Stage: Living Room
This is most of Sabo’s 5.5-hour marathon sunrise set, which said goodbye to the final night of the festival into Monday morning. After an exuberant weekend, it was the perfect cooldown before the masses started making their way back to civilization.

He laid down some globally inspired house and tech vibes for a set which was tranquil and flowed smoothly, just like the nearby Salmo river. If you’re looking for something to set the mood for a daytime pool party, or a late-night dip, this will easily help you get comfortable, no matter which body of water you choose to swim in. Toulouse-based Chloé Herry, best known as CloZee, rocked the Grove on the evening of her Shambs debut. Her mix featured an eclectic mix of a variety of sounds – from some low-to-the-ground frequencies, to world-influenced melodies, as well as a good number of throwbacks and hip-hop remixes to get the crowd singing along and feeling nostalgic.

Her own natural flair of magic, combined with that of the Grove’s, brought about a heavy yet euphoric set, which is creating a lot of buzz for her return this year.
If there’s anyone who can make weird feel like the norm, it’s Brooklyn’s Jasha Tull, a.k.a. Space Jesus. Along with Sub Focus and Getter, he was treated to a Shambhala Live video of his own, which shows a glimpse of what went down the eve before the festival was in full swing.

He was also a very soothing voice amidst the wild, weird madness – at intermittent points, he would hop on the mic, and spread loving vibes into the crowd. Whether from homesickness, being a first-timer, or whatever other reason, he also assured anybody freaking out/uneasy/paranoid about anything that everything will be alright, and to just take in the moment and let go.

His set includes the track ‘M. Night Shambhala‘, which he created to express his love for the festival since his 2015 debut!
This is a rather monumental time for the Canadian bass maestro, given that he’s preparing a special 10th anniversary set for this year’s shindig, along with the launch of his own music festival later this year. At nearly 3 million views since its release, this set brings the full force of the Village to your speakers, so take caution in where you choose to unleash this.

And to those going to both festivals this year, I hope you realize that you’re THE envy of the town.

Rezz seems ready to drop her debut album, especially with its release date right around the corner – but not before revealing its final teaser! This time, she pairs up with Toronto’s own 13 to provide ‘DRUGS!’: a track which will take you for a crazy ride – one you may not be able to fully comprehend or handle.

Everything starts off light, playful, and wonky, and, like the singles that came before it, has Rezz’s signature air of mystery to open the track. However, it peaks hard at the drop, and packs a heavy punch with each beat; the drop features a nice blend of 13’s grungy wubs, with Rezz’s beat formation laid down as a solid foundation. Overall, it feels like an uneasy trip that you just can’t get enough of.

Mass Manipulation finally releases in its entirety next week. Pre-order the album, and prepare for the musical maelstrom that the Queen of Darkness has in store for us!
